Undergarments

Recommended Posts

Hi,

DD's teacher has just announced a new uniform for older girls. Frustratingly it has been designed as a fait accompli... And is low back and high leg! Not so good for a fully mature young woman (E cup). She has been wearing crop tops and sports bras, but has been told off as these are not considered subtle enough. Before I go out a spend yet more money on what may or may not be suitable support, does anyone here have recommendations on subtle, nude (?) support undergarment/bra. Goodness knows what will happen when exam time comes. :-( heeeelp!!!

Hi,

May or not be suitable but myself and a number of my students swear by the Bloch backless bodysuit. It has a clear back strap and i think you can also buy a nude back strap. Primark also have some great clear back bra options and boob essential packs with spare clear straps low back converters etc.

I have been known to make my own bras when I can't find one that works, using the boob essential packs, tea bag dying, and hacking apart and resewing bras!

Best of luck!

Capezio camisole Bratex? Wear moi also have a new underwear range out.

Don't have any experience of either but dd has tried Bloch and Capezio as didn't feel uniform leotards gave any support. She didn't find they offered any support at all.

Perhaps ask the teacher what she would suggest, which would hopefully then make here aware of your daughters problem and how unsuitable her choice of uniform is for 'a fully mature young woman'.

She might then be able to offer a second style leotard perhaps.

Hi Loopy. My dd finds that a fully lined or half lined leotard is much more supportive than the ones with a flimsy little bra shelf. I don't know how your dd's new leotards are lined? A friend of mine had a seamstress unpick a class leotard and line the front with a firmer flesh coloured stretchy fabric. I myself have lined a class leotard with the front of an old one. Worked wonders. I'd even do the same with 2 new leotards in the future. Well worth it - ballet undergarments seem to be for modesty rather than support and the supportive ones seem to only go up to a C cup. Most importantly keeps dd happy so I don't have to listen to her complaining!!

I agree with Lottie - ask the teacher what she would suggest. This actually makes me really cross. My daughter did manage her advanced 1 exam wearing a Bratek leotard but she wouldn't have got away with it for long classes not wearing a bra underneath a leotard. Luckily our teacher didn't mind what the seniors wore for class but they would often forget to take her into consideration when choosing costumes! Why should these girls feel excluded due to something out of their control? And in my daughter's case, being unlucky and inheriting my genes!!

Sorry, rant over

DD's dance teacher changed her uniform for the bratek leotard after discussion with the girls; for most of them it's fine

At college DD wears a sports bra that shows and it isn't a problem - but as you say costumes for shows can be tricky

Combining a larger cup size (EE) & a smaller back size (26) means everyday bra buying is tricky & specialist bras are almost impossible

I cheat: I wear a good supportive (underwired) sports bra from M&S with a £5 nude 'sports bra' (aka crop top) from Sainsburys. You can get these from most supermarkets and they have nice wide straps which cover my Sports bra straps and is a much cheaper solution than buying lots of specialist stuff. I guess you'd have to check with the teacher that it's ok, but my teacher who prefers not to see underwear is happy with that as a compromise for classes. For exams I have a good strapless Wonderbra (one of those weird moulded things with plastic in) which I tape or sew to leo.

I love how people always suggest the Bratek ones. Try fitting anything above a C cup in there! I'm only a DD and have enough leotard/underwear problems!

Oh gosh Loopy I feel for your DD! Having inherited my grandmothers genes (32EE) when I was dancing ( pre children I mean) it was always a problem!! How I used to wish I was flat chested! I loved my ballet and dreamed of a little "ballet body" but it was never to be. I remember wearing a normal bra and a sports bra for my ISTD intermediate exam ( now advanced 1) and feeling I could hardly breathe. Luckily the uniform leotard was a high back with long sleeves. Its so unfair to effectively discriminate against girls who are " curvy" on the top when they can be just as talented as their flat chested friends. I have to admit praying to the powers that be that my DD would not have inherited my genes so she wouldn't suffer the same problems... luckily my prayers were answered but I feel for those with the same problem I had!

I wear sports bras that are visible usually for general class. Next do a brilliant nude bandeau minimising strapless bra which I would totally recommend, depending on how low your leotard is you can pull down and readjust the band to be hidden and still be supported.

as a 30/32F primark underwear is entirely useless!!

I've just ordered a capezio bodysuit which I'm hoping will be supportive enough under costumes for show purposes ????

Anondancer has a friend got a Capezio body you can look at? My suspicion is they really offer no support at all and are just a modesty and hygiene garment. A lot of the online dance retailers won't accept returns of opened tights or underwear and it would be a shame to be stuck with a useless item.

Anon if you can check someone else's out you should be able to cancel the order if you feel it isn't suitable.

I once managed to return 6 pairs of tights despite the retailers policy as it was obvious they hadn't been opened and I just had a senior moment ordering the wrong size.

Pictures which brand and style does your dd have? My dd has a mix of Bloch child and adult plus a Capezio one and none have a bra shelf. Last year she had to wear a costume that was too large around bust and she was very self conscious as her current body suits seemed too flimsy. It would be nice to be prepared with something more suitable in case she has same problem in future.

I bought the capezio bra tek one which is basically a shelf bra with a little extra padding.

Can anyone recommend suitable under garments for a tutu? Dd has previously worn a body stocking but obviously gives no support and now feels she needs just a little. Thanks

Wouldn't it be the body type all in one that has been discussed over last few posts? They are on uniform lists at vocational schools for show time to preserve modesty and also for hygiene under costumes that might be shared between different casts.

Primark do those molded completely strapless bra's which  I wouldn't want to try loose, but if you stitch them into the leotard they work well because they are molded and underwired.  It is trial and error to get it firmly fixed in the right position though.  Good luck with your search.  its so difficult for teenagers who have curves as they are selfconcious anyway and the dance world only seems to design for the flat chested.

So my 'Capezio Bratek Nude Camisole Leotard' came and I tested it under a few leotards I have, I've come to the conclusion they don't quite provide enough support for me personally. I felt I could get away with it and be relatively comfortable under my halterneck leotard which also has a shelf bra, but under anything else it wasn't supportive enough. However it was the best one I've come across so far and I think it'd be fine for anyone up to a DD cup!!

That's a shame. Can you return it?

I wonder if something like this would be any good? http://www.bravissimo.com/products/lingerie/bra-accessories/low-back-converter-clips/black/mf102blk/

Actually if any small backed/large busted people haven't discovered Bravissimo yet, they are worth a look in general. But with that converter above, you could perhaps wear a supportive bra under a reasonably low backed leotard?
