  1. Gosh, that's a surprise! Sadly I don't have tickets for that cast as the dates don't fit. I am quite surprised that they didn't put James Hay in there, considering what a great partnership he and Akane made in Sleeping Beauty. Or what about Alex Campbell, after the amazing Manons they have just done? As there does seem to be a Principal pecking order, wouldn't Alex have priority here? Does William already know the role from his BRB days? Mind you, this is a new production so I guess even if he knows the basics there is still a lot to learn. I hope it works really well!
  2. Skating moves? Sounds fascinating, please elaborate as I didn't see the screening!
  3. I agree about tonight Ninamargaret. Another wonderful and perfectly nuanced performance from this fabulous cast. I just couldn't take my binoculars off James Hay, especially in Act 2!
  4. Ha ha I will be like Louis XIV, eating my tickets while an audience watches! 🤣🤣 But that won't happen because Matthew will get promoted! 🤞
  5. Very, very slight view restriction. I will be sitting next to whoever takes the ticket so we can meet beforehand to do the exchange as it isn't an e-ticket. If you are interested, please send me a PM and let me know here that you have done so. It won't break the bank if I don't sell it, but it would just be nice for someone to use it!! Thanks Sim
  6. Thanks so much, Bluebird. I look forward to watching those during my lunch break today!!
  7. Great video, thanks Jane. I notice that the stage manager was giving all her instructions in English!
  8. Do read ToThePointe's review of this cast posted further up the thread. She says it all so well. I didn't see the transmission tonight, but this cast blew me away a couple of weeks ago.
  9. Yes, by its very nature it is bleak and desperate. On the other hand, it contains some of the best, most interesting and most difficult pdd known to Man, and for that alone it is well worth persevering. Also because it highlights how well a dancer has to dance and act to pull off a MacMillan narrative role convincingly. Johan Kobborg famously said that by the end of Act 1 he always felt as if he had already danced a three-act ballet. If you are depressed and disturbed at the end, it has done its work....but I always walk out of a performance in awe of how human beings can be so beautiful whilst portraying something so ugly, and that uplifts me. Somewhere on this thread I posted up a link to an interview I did with David Wall in 2005. He created the role of Rudolf and talked to me at length about that experience, so well worth you having a read. If you can, get your hands on the South Bank Show documentary about the making of Mayerling, starring Wall, MacMillan and Lynne Seymour (the men smoking in the rehearsal studio...imagine that now!!). There is also a programme about MacMillan on BBC4 this coming Sunday night, which will most probably discuss it as well. Do give it a try....it is yet another example of the versatility of our beloved art form!
  10. I agree with Anna above. My oh my, what a beautiful performance. Ninamargaret, you are absolutely right. This was a human tragedy, not a grand opera overblown tragedy. From the very first eye contact between Marguerite and her Armand, their love, affection and emotional connection were manifest for all to see. The exquisite joy of their love was so clearly embodied through beautiful, perfect dance from both of these very talented artists. The acting from both was so good throughout that I can hardly call it acting.....they WERE Marguerite and Armand. In a ballet where there is no time to properly establish a back story or develop character, these two did a wonderful job of telling us about both. Tragedy works best when a happy situation is set up and then torn apart, and this is what happened here. The contrast between their happiness and the unravelling of it, leading to Marguerite's public humiliation (which, because of Ball's incredible portrayal, I physically winced at), was done as well as i have ever seen it done in this ballet. Such physical and emotional passion. The fact that we could really, really feel the love between them made the ending so hard to bear: wasted opportunities, unnecessary hurt, final redemption. Lauren and Matthew were on fire last night, in all respects, and for me this was the perfect example of what ballet is about. I never cease to be amazed how, when it is done right, we are carried on a journey through all the emotions; last night I was in turn happy, sad, angry, passionate and weepy. Incredible stuff....and if Matthew Ball isn't promoted to Principal at the end of this season I will eat my ballet tickets.
  11. Except that Mr O'Hare doesn't seem to believe in establishing partnerships. It's mix and match at the RB these days.
  12. And that marvellous Giselle in February! They had better be cast together in R&J..... 😠😠
  13. Wow what lovely words, Penelope! I will be seeing their final performance and can't wait.
  14. Thanks Bluebird and Ian.... I had no idea about this!
  15. As I don't see ENB very often I have splurged on two shows: 7th (Maria) and 14th (Jurgita). Really looking forward to it!
  16. This was my first viewing of this triple. Lovely to see Matthew Ball and Calvin Richardson reprise their roles so wonderfully in Obsidian Tear. I did prefer it when Nicol Edmonds was the 'leader' as he had more of a fearsome presence than William Bracewell did last night. Great dancing all around, though. M&A.....I was left strangely unmoved at the end. I don't know why, because Nunez and Muntagirov danced perfectly well, and acted their roles perfectly well, but for some reason it just didn't get at my heart, the way I felt when I saw Rojo/Polunin or Osipova/Shklyarov. I felt wrecked after those performances. I didn't feel much of a deep connection between them, and at a couple of points it looked like they were in two different ballets. Funny how we all perceive things so differently! Cuthbertson/Ball tomorrow night so I will be interested to see how I react to that one. Elite Syncopations.....a cute ballet that hides some very difficult choreography. A fun way to end the evening, but I think I would have preferred it to be in the middle and end with M&A.
  17. I am so annoyed that I don't have tickets for the second show. I was only going to go to one to see Akane as Stephen McRae as DG just didn't float my boat at all. Who knew what a brilliant pairing Alexander and Akane would make? The ballet stars were definitely aligned.....
