The Royal Ballet: Manon, London, March-May 2018

I am so annoyed that I don't have tickets for the second show. I was only going to go to one to see Akane as Stephen McRae as DG just didn't float my boat at all. Who knew what a brilliant pairing Alexander and Akane would make? The ballet stars were definitely aligned.....- 592 replies

Yes, she will be doing pd3, so at least Madrid gets to see her in something.

I so agree Betterankles. Gailene has made such a huge difference to the current state of the RB by ensuring that a new generation of dancers had the best and most appropriate training possible at the RBS. Her loss is still keenly felt and I hope (and believe) that the current management are following in her footsteps by maintaining her high standards.- 592 replies

Such a shame that Madrid won't get to see Yasmine Naghdi in the role of O/O. I guess there weren't enough performances to fit her in, and as she is the most 'junior' principal she is the one left out.

I was just coming here to say the same thing. Wrong ballerina, wrong ballet. Very shoddy indeed.

What a wonderful performance tonight. So passionate and believable and utterly heartbreaking. More tomorrow. JohnS I am so sorry you missed it. I am very glad that the migraine I had been suffering from had lifted in time for me to go. I would have been devastated to have missed this special night.- 592 replies

I agree with every beautiful word you wrote, Bridie. A magnificent performance all round. Hirano was a revelation as Lescaut and after one performance already rates as one of the best I've seen. I really hope he gets a crack at Rudolf next season. Mendizabal was the perfect foil for him, and Avis made me shudder with his evil, sleazy GM. Lamb and Muntagirov turned in two stunning performances and took my breath away. All four of their pdd tore at different emotions and I felt wrung out at the end. I am so glad this was committed to film.- 592 replies

I certainly hope so! -
I really loved this programme, and was lucky enough to see both casts. I thought that the melding of the three companies worked really well. I hope that all the good reviews from critics and audiences will encourage Kevin O'Hare to revive these ballets for the Linbury stage soon after it opens again. What a treat it was to see these very rare pieces performed so well. On another issue, I have written to complain to the box office manager about the whole seating debacle; I will let you know the response I get. I can almost see it now: "we are very sorry your visit to the Barbican didn't live up to expectations. We strive to ensure that all of our customers enjoy a happy experience during their visit here.....blah blah blah." I am sure there won't be anything done or any compensation offered. I bought Row A so that my view wouldn't be impeded; I then had a whole new row put in front of me and my view was impeded by someone's head, which meant that I had to move from side to side which probably meant I was disturbing the person behind me (who was too polite to say anything if so). This wasn't cheap at £18 for an hour. I know that many other people were unhappy, so maybe if they receive complaints they will ensure this doesn't happen in future. I am sure it is the theatre department who are probably to blame for this; if that's the case, I hope the complaints are passed to them.

I think that the ABT performance at Sadlers Wells is the only time I have seen Tudor performed here (sadly I missed the RBS one). Why are his works so 'ballets non grata' in this country? Have they still not forgiven him for having gone to the States?!! -

No indication anywhere of who the other two participating dancers are? How nice to see some Tudor being danced in the UK!
