  1. BBC2 are showing a repeat of the David Bintley doc Dancing in the Blitz on BBC2 Sat Nov 13th 4.40pm. Also SkyArts are showing Australian Ballet's Sleeping Beauty Tuesday 16th Nov 6.45am.
  2. Apologies! I sent the link to a friend a few days ago and when he tried it a day or 2 ago he said he couldn't get the link to work. I searched under POB on YouTube and couldn't find it but have just thought to try the Forum link and found it. Incidentally there is still a POB WBD link to excerpts if you want a taster before trying the real thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAdL5IC5Jxc&t=274s However, while searching for a plot synopsis I found an article that said it is going to be released at cinemas later in the year. Might be good on a big screen. I watched it and quite enjoyed it (a bit more to my taste than The Creature and possibly Dante though I haven't seen the latter yet. Am waiting for the streaming) it does go on a bit in parts with ( think) too many divertissements. I'm sure it would be a tighter ballet with 30 minutes shaved off it. However, it is very opulent, the music is pleasant and Lacotte designed the sets and costumes as well. Will need to see it again to really appreciate it and work out what's going on though it is reasonably self-explanatory. I thought the New York review was quite perceptive and picked up several of my thoughts re the ballet itself and POB dancers. I'll include it here though it was probably previously included in the daily review section. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/18/arts/dance/the-red-and-the-black-review-paris-opera-ballet.html
  3. Thanks Richard. I wondered if it was illness or injury. Hope she's back son.
  4. Yes I've been rewatching the Aud Jebsen Insight and the new work created for the Aud Jebsen dancers in this year's WBD and was struck by her commitment, talent and good humour. Was pleased to see her in one of Rob's photos for Giselle's curtain call. I really like all the Aud Jebsen dancers in her intake and hope they all are given places at the RB. Incidentally, Hanna Park, who featured in the original Aud Jebsen Insight, hosted and taught by Christopher Saunders didn't seem to be in the WBD new work. Is she still with the RB? I hope so as I really liked her.
  5. I've logged in but still no sign of Swan Lake on my Chrome browser. Also calendar, email and choose dates options not working either and I'm going out in 30 minutes!
  6. Thought it might be! Still interesting though. Searched for it in Tvguide.co.uk and apparently programme 5 in the series is about a Bristol Old Vic production of Madame Butterfly so not all about the ROH.
  7. Just checking the SkyArts listing as I thought I'd seen a mention for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and I was right; it's on tomorrow at 6.15am until 8.30am. It says it's the 2013 Lamb/Bonelli/Watson version. However, before it, just a short programme 6.00-6.15am, apparently part 3 of a 6 part series called Arts Uncovered. This episode 'Follows the stage managers at the ROH as they prepare for a new show at Covent Garden' (no indication whether the show is opera or ballet). I'm trying to think if I remember this series first time around. It says it's part of a ROH season so I'm not sure if the whole series is about the ROH or just this episode. Will have to set it to record the series and see what happens. Unfortunately the Radio Times only gives minimal information for SkyArts so it only says Arts Uncovered with no indication as to what the programme is about which is why I missed it when I went through it. Nov 7th 6.25-8.30am is another repeat of the Ashton triple with Midsummer Nights Dream and Yanovsky's final performance of Marguerite and Armand. Much as I enjoy Alice and of course the Ashton triple I wish SkyArts could screen more recent arts performances. There was one year that they screened the cinema series the year it was filmed but those days are long gone. Surely there are ballets/opera filmed abroad that we never get to see that could be acquired if there is a problem with UK performances.
  8. Not really ballet but I've had an email from Trafalgar Studios to say the musical Anything Goes is being shown at some cinemas from Nov 28th - Dec 1st.
  9. I've just been in contact with the ROH box office re returning tickets and was told tickets purchased before last week (new booking period?) can still be given a gift certificate if people wanted to return them (as I did), and I received a gift certificate for tickets booked for Giselle and Nutcracker. It's only tickets purchased from last week that the £4 returns fee applies to. I also asked about when the seat view facility would be returning and was told it probably won't be before the New Year or next booking period after the New Year.
  10. Fabulous news! When I saw the programme I was so jealous of all you lucky people fortunate enough to attend. I emailed customer services asking when/if it would be streamed but I needn't have bothered thanks to Richard. Something to look forward to.
  11. Thursday 28th Oct Channel 4 12.10 am 45 minutes (repeated 1 hour later on +1) Ballet Black: Eightfold. Conceptual dance film performed by the award-winning company Ballet Black, created by the group's artistic director Cassa Pancho and film director Mark Donne, and accompanied by an observational script read by Thandiwe Newton
  12. I've been trying to access the Stuttgart Onegin rehearsal today and failed. Was it only online for the live event or am I missing something? I enjoyed the last Onegin rehearsal they did last year or the year before. Hope it's not too long before the RB stage it again. All the dancers seem to love it.
  13. Haven't watched RB yet but that's a treat to come over the next few days, also Stuttgart rehearsing Onegin. However I have seen the ENB doc about Raymonda which looked very promising and exciting. It's one of the few ballets I thought could actually benefit from a compete re think as the original plot and characters are very boring (to me at least). Just wish they'd announce the casting.
  14. Me too yesterday and couldn't buy tickets either, just got the egg timer. However, no problem with anything this evening.
  15. I only bought my ticket for the 23rd matinee less than a week ago (haven't had a reminder yet) and it definitely says 1.30 start. I'm going to get there for then just in case. Would rather be hanging around a bit than miss the first act, especially as its got most of my favourite scenes in it.
  16. Brilliant review, Marie and great to have such a positive one for Yasmine and Vadim. Is this the first full length they've done together? I'm looking forward to it even more now. Roll on next Friday!
  17. Sorry if this has been mentioned elsewhere but the latest Friends email or booklet mentioned that the Balletboyz film of Romeo and Juliet : Beyond Words with Hayward/Bracewell has been nominated for an Arts Emmy Award. Hope it wins. It deserves to though I don't know what the competition is. Also aren't we seeing them partner again in Swan Lake? I bet that's really special though I would have loved to see them do Romeo and Juliet together again. Coming back to Vadim I've booked to see him Friday 22nd Oct. I've only seen him once before in the role and it wasn't long after he came to the RB. It was the only role I've ever seen him in where I wasn't totally convinced by his performance. Strange, as he did it so much with ENB, including Daria Klimitova's final performance. Perhaps for me and some others, it might be the one role that eludes him. I sincerely hope not. I'll definitely be rooting for him and hoping I'll be as moved by both their performances as I was by the Hayward/Bracewell film which I thought was terrific, totally believable and heartbreaking. I'm also booked to see Kaneko/Bracewell, Hayward/Coralles and Takada/Campbell so plenty of opportunities for comparison.
  18. Yes I forgot Flames of Paris. Another ballet in which she combined with Vasilev to give absolute perfection and a level of excitement you don't often get in ballet. It's wonderful to have dvds of these performances to remind myself how special they were. Also I've just remembered her Coppelia with the Bolshoi. Swanhilda isn't really a role I would associate with her but her personality and technique made it very special and uniquely hers.
  19. While I don't go and see Osipova as often as I used to I too have very strong memories of her Giselle with both the Bolshoi and RB. Her performances were incredibly poignant and somehow totally different to anyone else's I've seen. I'm looking forward to seeing her performance with Reece Clarke to see how she is developing the role as she is an artist who is always looking to add to her interpretation. Her Bolshoi Don Q London debut with Vasiliev at the Coliseum (2006 or 2007?) will always be remembered as one of my balletic highlights. The two of them just combined so well to give an evening of ballet sensation. They were so incredible it is difficult for me now to be totally immersed in another interpretation as something always seems lacking. I've never heard an audience reception like it. You would almost think you were at a pop concert with the cheering and screaming. I thought one man was going to fall out of his box he was jumping up and down so much! Then there were all the Macmillan roles in which she excelled and Tatiana in Onegin. She is a great talent and we've been lucky to have her in London when she could have had her pick of Companies anywhere in the world. It is a tribute to the RB wide-ranging rep. that so many to dancers choose to base their careers here. I'm still hoping she will star in Onegin opposite Vadim. That I would have to see every night, despite the expense. Would it be the first time two Russians had performed it outside Russia? Anyway I hope its not too long in coming.
  20. Also they're partnering again in Swan Lake? I bet that's really special.
  21. SkyArts are showing Northern Ballet's Casanova 6-8am Wed 13th Oct.
  22. SkyArts are showing a Bolshoi Ballet Coppelia Sat 2nd Oct 1-3 pm (a civilised time!) No casting details but I suspect it might be the more recent cinema broadcast with Shrainer and Ovcharenko (?)
  23. Judging by the reviews (very few compared to The Creature) this is a ballet I'd love to see and wonderful it's being streamed. Well done Scottish ballet for producing something fun and lighthearted. Just because a ballet is short and humourous it doesn't mean it's any less of a good ballet than one that's long and 'meaningful'. Given the emphasis on mime in ballet I'm constantly surprised there aren't more light hearted, fun ballets. Perhaps the Arts Coucil aren't keen on funding anything not 'relevant'. Also you can never really imagine most modern choreographers (possibly ADS too) having fun on their choreographic agenda, mores the pity.
  24. Well, the RB are doing this anyway with Romeo being filmed the beginning of Feb but not broadcast until the 14th. Perhaps this is an area they can explore as other ballet companies seem to do it. I suppose there is no real need for the cinema broadcast to be 'live' as from a cinema perspective, if it's filmed with a live audience you appear to be watching a live performance even if it isn't. If it's a lot easier and cheaper to broadcast a filmed performance then by all means go for it. Perhaps just keep one or 2 live performances a year; say for something special. I'm sure the majority of people seeing the ROH screenings at their local cinema aren't really bothered about whether or not it's live. OK ,we might prefer live performances so we can discuss them on the Forum but if the ROH can save money by not having live satellites good luck to them. Incidentally, RHowarth is quite correct in that the ROH used to broadcast 12 performances a year at the cinema not the 6 I said. It doesn't take long for me to lose my memory! Dan JLs point about the ROH being cautious about committing themselves to a lot of expensive livestreaming is a good one too. They did at least pencil in the camera dates to indicate their intention of doing something; whether it be for livestreaming/TV/dvd so lets hope something comes of it. As long as I get the Ashton triple in some format I don't care. Sheila's point about the Ballet Association Funding for the Ashton livestreaming is a good one and gives me hope we will see it in some format. I just hope next season sees a return to a full length Ashton; la Fille would obviously be the main favourite but I'd settle for Sylvia or even Ondine, especially after Francesca Hayward's amazing performance in the Fonteyn Gala. Like Fonteyn she was obviously born to dance the role.
