  1. Iā€™ve been thinking about the annual joiners and leavers announcement and wondering how dancers have been able to audition if they are looking to leave, or if they have not had contracts extended. Do the Aud Jebsen Young Dancers at RB have automatic acceptance into the main company? It was my impression they did not. Happy to learn more about the programme ...
  2. The ā€œBenois De la Danseā€œ are streaming a selection from their annual galas in 2015-2019. Every Thursday at 7pm Moscow time and on demand for 48 hours. This is the third week (2017). Todayā€™s 20 minute programme includes a lovely Hans Van Manen pdd to Satieā€™s TROIS Gnociennes performed by The phenomenal Ulyana Lopatkina and Andrey Ermakov. Do watch! ā€œDear friends! The Š¢hird edition of the new project ā€œBenoit de la Dance. Pages of Historyā€ will be presented on the festivalā€™s Youtube channel. The program will begin with a duet from "Cinderella" in choreography by Rudolf Nureyev. It will be performed by soloists of the Paris Opera Ballet Dorothe Gilbert (Benois de la Danse nominee) and Hugo Marchand (Benois de la Danse laureate). Solo from "Rattika" by Mats Ek (Benois de la Danse laureate) will be presented by soloist of Ballet on Rhein Yuko Kato. The Third Edition will be completed by "Trois Gnociennes" with soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre Uliana Lopatkina (Benois de la Danse laureate) and Andrey Ermakov. Choreography by Hans Van Manen (twice Benois de la Danse laureate).ā€
  3. photo of non-SD audience on the bank posted by ROH house manager Salvatore Scalzo. Admittedly it is outdoors. I was surprised by the lack of SD.
  4. I really enjoyed watching the R&J broadcast even though Iā€™d seen it in the cinema in June last year. I was able to appreciate it more this time without distraction of people around me. Also I could get closer to the screen at home. I wasnā€™t that convinced by Yasmine Naghdi in the earlier acts (Too careful? Too may fluttering eyelashes) but she was a tour de force in Act III and gave herself fully to the role. Superb. Matthew Ballā€™s portrayal was lovely throughout ... those cinema close-ups are so revealing and he was in the role throughout. I also notice how much his technique has improved since this performance last year ... more good stuff to come šŸ¤ž
  5. I believe they are performing every Sunday afternoon. Itā€™s not well advertised! No idea what else is being performed ... Contemporary ? Acrobatics ? looks fun sat on the bank opposite watching (photo from last Sunday)
  6. I caught up with the BBC4 Programme after R&J last night ... I was impressed by Francesca Haywardā€™s delivery of the words, but did not like the Wayne McGregor piece much on this repeat viewing. Vadim was so moving again ... real depth to his emotional commitment, not to forget his exceptional dancing. I also thought Fumi Kaneko was excellent, that first circular movement with her arm and body after they have walked on was exquisite. I believe the man in this pdd is mostly meant to be unseen support, but I thought Reece could have been more emotionally involved. Seemed impassive and stiff to me. My highlight was the Matty Ball and Mayara Magri pdd .... the emotion from both of them, and their beautiful technique and synchronised movements. Such moving music from Ezio Bosso, and really interesting choreography from Christopher Wheeldon. Wonderful. Loved it. Will be watching this (and Vadim) on repeat šŸ˜‰
  7. thank you for this link. Works in the UK! Fascinating .... even without full understanding. Lots of dance!
  8. Not knowing the ballet La Sylphide as well as many other classics, I was rather delighted with this performance. I thought Jurgita Dronina was delightful as the Sylph ... light and mischievous. She really led James a merry dance! I was pleased to see Isaac Hernandezā€˜s super technique in this demanding role in the close ups, and also his acting which doesnā€™t always come across to my distant theatre seat. I also appreciated seeing Giorgio Garrett in a featured role as Gurn, he has fine technique and even better acting skills. And it was super to see Jane Haworth as Madge, now that she is retiring. Great interpretation and always so clear in her movement and facial expressions. No need to overdo it. What a super career as a dancer, character artist and member of the artistic management team she has had. Bravo!
  9. Iā€™m watching this now, there is the odd flash of Inakiā€™s past technique, but mostly he is past it. Odd choice for a farewell performance as itā€™s a young manā€™s ballet. Lauren Cuthbertson is super in this role , so itā€™s worth watching for her part in it. Not yet convinced by the chemistry but Inaki is improving as it progresses.
  10. Starved of live dance? If you are in or near London head to the Potemkin Theatre, Hoxton Docks in East London for free live outdoor performances on ... Sunday 5th July 3pm, 5pm and 7pm A number of Royal Ballet dancers are involved ....Valentino Zucchetti, David Donnelly, Luca Acri, Harry Churches and Annette Buvoli (performing The Dying Swan) plus dancers from other disciplines. It seems only to be advertised on Instagram ....
  11. šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ I thought we gave up on joined-up thinking / data at ROH some time ago? Seems to be a big gap between the data expertise at ROH and at ā€˜data miningā€™ by online advertisers, security hackers etc!
  12. From his IG posts he has been in the USA for most of the last year. I wondered if he was on sabbatical. I enjoyed his dancing, sad that he wonā€™t be dancing again at ROH or anywhere
  13. I was thrilled with last nightā€™s ROH concert. A HUGE step-up in quality of presentation ... a knowledgeable presenter, actual information on the performers and pieces and interviews on stage too. Even holding music on the livestream before it went live. Hoorah! Shame it is the last one. I loved getting to know the young opera singers. So much talent and diverse backgrounds. And the ballet was divine. All 4 dancers were superb. I shall be watching It again.
  14. Well all I can say is ... how blessed have we ballet lovers been in lockdown? It is has been a never-to-be-forgotten time of ballet treasures from all around the world. I am very thankful for the diverse offerings classics, re-imagined classics, new works. And above all the experience of so many different companies and dancers. I have missed many Iā€™d have liked to have seen. And yes Iā€™d gladly pay in future to watch some Iā€™ve missed and Iā€™d also pay to watch again some that really impressed me. Hugely thankful that there are still streams whilst ballet in Europe is taking small steps to returning to the stage.
  15. One thought on the cutting costs side would be less opulent productions .... less scenery, less flamboyant costumes, cutting special effects, fewer participants on stage. I realise this last suggestion means fewer jobs šŸ˜” Having seen Johan Kobborgā€™s R&J with cast of 25 or so convey crowd scenes even on the enormous Arena Di Verona stage, it can be done. And indeed to me, was more enjoyable than having oneā€™s eye constantly being distracted by inconsequential action going on. There is already a lot going on in the story!
  16. excellent plan! my hair is so long now I can attach all sorts of trailing plants to it šŸ¤£
  17. So depressing that there arenā€™t even good noises (never mind money or an actual plan) coming out of our govt on this. Thank goodness for ALW having a go. I hope his plan works šŸ¤ž
  18. I must check again. I thought the ROH had just covered the orchestra pit to enlarge the stage forwards. It looks like they may have used part of the rear stage too. And have musicians in the wings. Novel!
  19. with Emilio Pavan (Formerly of ENB) ... itā€™s the grand pas de trois šŸ˜‰
  20. Munich are doing something different .... They have removed 4 rows of the stalls in the Bayerische Staatsoper to make a larger socially distanced orchestra area ... no longer a pit. I think the photos explain all without the need for a translation. It will be a new challenge for the conductor to balance orchestra and opera singers. Ballet should be fine. But donā€™t buy seats in the first few rows of the stalls as I think vision will be impaired by the orchestra. For the time being the opera house is only selling limited tickets in the first two tiers, and none in the stalls, for their programmes on 4 days of the week. Itā€™s a start. https://blog.staatsoper.de/post/news/wo-ist-der-orchestergraben-hin.html?type=rss''&cHash=fd240f74b7d00e27b0f0b531b22324b8
