  1. As expected, these were virtually sold out early this morning. I was on line at 0900 and there were a few top price tickets left and a few rear amphitheatre. So no luck for this Friend! It will b e interesting to see what is available when public booking opens.
  2. I think the problem is that MacMillan was trying to do two things at once, which didn't really work. the basic story of gang rape combined with the story of Christ's betrayal by Judas and even the wrapping of Christ's body and burial in the tomb, in this case the derelict car, just doesn't seem to work. I wonder if he wanted to do a ballet based on the story of Judas but didn't feel it would work, or be acceptable as a ballet? Equally, the story as it appears in the ballet is unacceptable to many people. I found the ballet powerful, and, as I had only seen it once before on tv, interesting and moving in many ways.
  3. Saw the triple bill last night. I hadn't seen Judas Tree on stage before and was surprised to find that I found it an impressive piece of work. Certainly not a comfortable or easy one, but to me it seemed to have grown out of Macmillan's earlier works, and at the end I found myself wondering where Macmillan would have gone from there. Soares, Watson and Reece Clarke all superb, I think Lauren Cuthbertson, although dancing marvellously, was slightly demure, and I tend to agree with the poster who commented that the men looked just the sort that your mum would like her daughter to bring home! Greatly enjoyed Naghdi and Hirano in Elite Syncopations and a pretty good performance of Gloria.
  4. Wouldn't it be good to have a substantial programme about Macmillan while there are still so many people around who worked closely with him? The little snippets with McLeary and Mukhamedov were nowhere near long enough. The programme itself is a joke if it's intended to be a serious arts programme and the few minutes devoted to.Macmillan, or any arts feature is just laughable.
  5. I saw the triple bill at the second performance. I had forgotten what a beautiful ballet Concerto is and it was so beautifully danced. I hadn't seen Baiser before, but knew the music slightly. i enjoyed it, particularly a lovely lyrical performance by Andrew Peasgood as the boy. Elite Syncopations not a favourite, but the performances won me over and Precious Adams certainly knows how to fill the opera house - her exhuberance was infectios! Heard a slightly sour comment from a member of the audience who thought that Elite was the only thing worth sering!
  6. Bonelli/Morera in Manon my idea of bliss! Saw the Watson/Hayward cast and vs wait to see it again. I find it interesting to see that DeGrieux seems to have become a role favoured by older dancers. I had wondered if we might have seen Alexader Campbell in the role. A pity.
  7. Think the answer is to forget about ballet going,be careful of theatre, forget concerts - mostly carols and 'festive' music and stay at home with favourite Dvds, cds, and a few good bottles of wine!
  8. [A general thread for any feedback on the range of Kenneth MacMillan insight events being put on by the ROH in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of his death] And even more heart warming to see the tiny excerpt from House of Birds with Gable and Wells! But the whole programme excellent
  9. yes I think it was mentioned in The Times today which is carrying a lengthy article about MacMillan. I saw House of Birds several times and enjoyed it so a visit to the Barbican will probably be in order!
  10. yes, would love to see this again, and I think the 'chocolate box'sdesigns suited the music well. But even more I wish Images of Love could be revived - probably impossible after all this time, but maybe not.
  11. Interesting to see the two Mad Batters. I think maybe the dance looks better on a smaller dancer like Joseph Sissens whereas Calvin Richardson, being taller, seemed a rather .more elegant Hatter. A case of you pays your money and takes your choice!
  12. Saw him with John Barton in Stratford a few years ago talking about speaking Shakespearean verse. Both men looked somewhat frail, but the talk was totally awe inspiring. Good to have their marvellous Wars of the Roses on Dvd. Peter Hall one of the truly great men of the theatre.
  13. Good to see that this will be streamed on You Tube Tuesday evening and with Alexander Campbell introducing it. Maybe we'll get some idea of casting - the ROH website has been very tight lipped about this.
  14. doubt if any of us mere Friends or lower stand a chance of anything for The Ring! Will have to exist in my memories of Goodall!
  15. Mab, as a ballet goer since the late 50s I can assure you I saw Seymour , Beriosova and many others many times! Seymour was certainly unique and it's just a pity that there is so little of her work to see now. i didn't see her in Baiser so can't comment. Obviously choreographers tend to have dancers that they enjoy working with and whose style particularly suits their work, but different interpretations can often show aspects of a work that adds to its enjoyment.
  16. I'm beginning to wonder if it's worth being a Friend. I couldn't get tickets for 18/19 October when Friends booking opened, but got a ticket a couple of weeks ago. Now I see there are quite a few available. And of the 5 operas I have seen this year four had no seats available at the price I could pay when Friends booking opened but seats became available much later on. I wonder if the huge number of corporate bodies who sponsor the ROH are allocated generous numbers of seats and then return those that they do not use? the box office must be chaos with all of the exchanges/ returns etc. and it's a nuisance to have to keep checking the web site to see what has suddenly become available.
  17. Have never seen this, so I've got no pre conceived ideas about it. But I don't altogether agree with choreography looking less impressive on successors. While the dancers who were those who created the roles were memorable in them, other dancers have often bought something else to the role. Think of the many superb Juliet s we have seen, and I'm sure that David Wall's Mayerling was considered a definitive performance until a certain Ed Watson came along! Certain ballets will always be associated with the creators of roles, but a great deal of the enjoyment of ballet, for me at any rate, is seeing dancers tackle roles in ballets that I have known for years.
  18. Was highly amused, many years ago while attending Nutcracker at ROH to hear a very serious little girl say that she wanted to see how the dancers pointed their feet! A budding critic/ teacher I wonder?
  19. and it's the excellent French orchestra that uses instruments of the period. Their Daphnis and Chloe is gorgeous - would love to get them to accompany the ballet at ROH.
  20. also thanks from me! Picked up a nice S/C for this. Very grateful
  21. My first was Festival Ballet with Chopiniana, Nutcracker last act and Markova dancing the Dying Swan. Moved on to Harlequin in April and Pineapple Poll after that. Think my mother just carted me off because it was ballet; she wasn't knowledgeable but sensibly just took me to see what was offered.
  22. would generally agree with RuthE. I am short and find that Stalls Circle Row A is good, the centre part best for an overall view, but most expensive, the sides mean that you lose a good view of the side of the stage but still get super close ups of what's going on. Ideally, perhaps Grand Tier for overall view and then Side Stalls Circle for close up.
  23. yes, I've had these. Thought I must have been looking at some dodgy web sites!
  24. I for one would love earlier starts, but then I have the luxury of being retired! For those who work, early starts are difficult, then there are late train problems. Obviously a range of starting times is good, but then you'd run into the difficulty of A isn't dancing at the early performance but B is and you're not keen on B! Think we've got problems enough trying to keep up with all the excellent casts we've got at the moment.
