  1. At least quite a few of the Insight events are on You Tube now.I know they usually omit the questions asked afterwards, but better than nothing.
  2. A friend, who is also a Friend, told me that her last booking took well over an hour and a half,by the time she had queued, so patience and time is needed.
  3. Maybe the time has come for performances to be graded.1. Serious ballet/opera/ theatregoers. 2. Expense account/night out ballet/opera/theatregoers 3. Relaxed performances. Not sure how it would be policed though!
  4. Can assure you that the lowest level of Friends get very little special treatment. It seems to me that those who pay the higher rates of Friends membership then buy the cheaper seats in Stalls Circle, and Front Amphi. I try for side stalls circle and can rarely get it. When I became a Friend I thought it would help me to get tickets - it doesn't! Can easily get them for less popular triple bills (not Macmillan) but otherwise - forget it!
  5. See my first posting to this thread. I tried to book for the Macmillan triple with Concerto as soon as the lowest level of Friends booking opened and there was virtually nothing left except poor amphi seats. Rather like the booking for Ed Watson's Mayerling . Probably a lot of tickets have been allocated to the other companies involved, although given the huge numbers of higher level Friends, Patrons and everything else it's becoming virtually impossible for ordinary mortals to get decent tickets for the more popular programmes. It's worth keeping an eye on the web site though. I can often get pretty good opera seats nearer the date of performance at a reasonable cost even though nothing has shown as being available during Friends or the start of Public booking. ,
  6. I tend to use Europadisc, they're usually cheaper than Amazon and often have special offers. Anastasia isn't listed at the moment, but worth keeping an eye on.
  7. Wiltons is fascinating. it's recent restoration has only made it safe and improved the loos. The bar is cosy there is a sort of lounge and the theatre itself is quite large. Only thing against it is the acoustics are poor, certainly for plays, music might be a bit better. I'd probably avoid the gallery for listening. Certainly worth a visit.
  8. Lovely, especially Bonelli as Leontes. Can't see him having quite the same sort of curdled jealousy that Watson shows, but could be an interesting interpretation.
  9. Just back from today's matinee. Strange to be going to opera at 1130 but I think it attracted a slightly different audience. Quite a few children, tourists, most people definitely 'dressed down'. But one of the quietest audiences ever and so enthusiastic. No Alagna, but excellent Korean tenor, Sunh Kyu Park, who seemed to thoroughly enjoy himself. And a lovely Liu, Aleksandra Kurzak. I love the production, the stylised movement ( thought the dancers were especially good). I know people have different views about the opera, but I loved it. It's the second time I've seen, the production and I also saw the transmission on Friday, so I've done pretty well.
  10. Pleased about these. My only slight disappointment Is that Joseph Sissens didn't get promoted. After his excellent performance In Symphonic Variations I hoped he would, but hopefully another season will give him more opportunities.
  11. Seeing it on Sunday morning. Slightly odd choice for a Sunday morning entertainment but I love the opera and this production of it. Have spoken to several people who dislike it intensely and find the story distasteful. Can't say I agree at all.
  12. I also saw him on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed his performance. Thought the chorus was on terrific form. I think the production is more or less Ok, although I couldn't quite see the point of Desdemona apparently coming up from beneath the stage at one point.
  13. Having seen Matthew Golding with Frankie Hayward in R and J i must say I was impressed by both his dancing and his partnering. I wonder if the problem is that he does not find being on stage and having to act and project a character comfortable. The ROH Is a large space to fill. We have grown accustomed to our dancers having good acting ability, our actors having at least decent singing and dancing skills and our opera singers being competent actors. So the dancer, actor or singer who cannot provide the complete package has difficulties.
  14. Looks as though things are going back to the old Soviet days. And shades of Shostakovich 's troubles seem to be raising their ugly heads.
  15. Sorry, should have been clearer. They were in row A.
  16. Not ballet, but Otello at the ROH this evening. Sitting in Side stalls circle RowB. Party of 3 adults, 2 boys, around 14 and 10 years old. Came equipped with phones, sweets. General fidgeting, mum cuddling the younger child, fanning herself with programme, older boy conducting the orchestra. In the Interval Dad goes out and returns with multiple bottles of water which they place on the ledge. During the second act, more fanning, cuddling, sweets, conducting general fidgeting. I suppose because they must have paid over £200 per seat they thought they could behave in this manner. Surprised that the ushers allowed drink to be brought in and certainly surprised that they were not asked to remove the multiple bottles from the edge. End of season inertia perhaps?
  17. That part always reminds me of two cats sizing each other up!
  18. Thoroughly enjoyed this on Thursday. I loved the stylised movements, the costumes kept reminding me of Meissen 'Oriental' figures. Lucy Crowe was outstanding, both vocally and dramatically, and I loved Bejun Mehta, what a lovely voice. I don't think we had inappropriate laughter, more giggles at some of the subtitles. It we did get very enthusiastic applause. Not a bad opera for a 14 year old!
  19. Agree totally about Les Noces, but then to me the whole ballet is so beautiful it's difficult to.pick just one point. And I always get a shiver from the growing Christmas tree in Nutcracker!
  20. My memory is of Fonteyn's perfect arabesque on her entrance in Sleeping Beauty. No one else has ever made such an entrance!
  21. Virtually nothing left for Macmillan triple bill on 18/19 October.Even Orchestra Stalls completely sold out for 19th.
  22. Seeing this on Thursday. Have only seen the 'big four' so very early Mozart is a first for me. Was attracted by the sound of the production, so looking forward to it.
  23. Delighted at the winner. My choice exactly.I think the whole competition has been one of the best ever, with all five finalists being excellent. Very difficult to make a choice.
  24. So sorry to hear about Blackie. Some people say 'they're only pets', but to the many people like us they are a family member. She had a good life and a loving home, so much happier than many cats get.
