  1. Thought Ed Watson was magnificent in the last act on Tuesday. The first two acts I found he seemed to be a little less involved with the action. I found myself wishing for just a touch of McRae's rather manic performance. As other posters have said it could be a case of pacing himself a little more. Await Bonelli with interest!
  2. Seem to remember men sometimes being given awful laurel wreaths. And Ed Watson was given something on his birthday a couple of years ago after Winter's Tale.
  3. Rather an old one, but I remember seeing Alexander Grant dance Captain Belaye in Pineapple Poll with more panache than anyone else I ever saw. Certainly not his usual sort of role.
  4. Marvellously danced by McRae, but I felt it was all a bit manic. The tavern scene was, I thought, rather over the top - Rudolph appeared far too drunk, rather like Lescaut in Manon. Of course, Rudolph may have been manic; who knows. I enjoyed Paul Kay's Bratfisch, good Hungarian officers. Will be interested to see Watson and Bonelli this week.
  5. On a slightly frivolous note,when I made my bookings in December to see all four casts I was unable to get any side stalls circle seats on the left side for any performance. I like to try and sit on different sides for different performances so that I can see what happens on both sides of the stage. I have noticed before that left hand seats are more difficult to get - do you think this is connected to the easier access to the Paul Hamlyn bar?

  7. Lucky you - I've got to wait till Monday for my first fix! Then seeing all four casts-pure heaven. Even watched the Watson DVD the other night in preparation.
  8. And I remember a stunning performance of R and J with Annette Page, just about the best of the many performances I have seen. We've got used to the choreography now, but when it was first performed it was considered to be pretty revolutionary. But I wish I'd seen that Cinderella!
  9. Couldn't agree more with Floss's estimation of Donald McLeary. I saw him many times, particularly with Lynn Seymour (wonderful) and a few times when he got a partner through a slightly sticky patch. I wonder if the fact that more attention is now paid to male dancers and their greater prominence in new ballets means that rather less emphasis is placed on partnering skills, especially in the more traditional ballets?
  10. I find buying tickets at ROH a bit of a lottery. I'm on the lowest level of Friends , like sitting in side SC, but these seats have often sold by the time I get to them. So I buy something a little more expensive and then find cheaper seats become available later. Especially true of opera seats which are even m ore eye watering expensive. I've often decided against going to an opera on grounds of cost and then been able to buy a decent relatively cheap seat later on. Glad that I'm not an opera fanatic - keeping up with ballet performances is bad enough!
  11. I'm also going on 8th - for my money Hayward is pretty near to being the perfect Ashton dancer. And i have to admit all 3 of the dream Oberons would suit me very well! Marvellous to have such a wealth of talent.
  12. Not very inspiring - just as well given my financial situation! But could get more interesting when we get casting details, and I'm sorry, but unlike many on the Forum I love Winters Tale. Good to see Obsidian Tear again and Concerto but some of the revivals leave me cold
  13. Good to see a letter in The Times today complaining about the antics of the phone users and photo takers at the ROH on 1 March. Not so good to read that the correspondent has received no response from Kevin O'Hare, to whom the letter was sent. I suspect that theatres have got to the stage where they accept there is little they can do.
  14. Maybe some sort of computer glitch managed to apparently wipe out large numbers of tickets. Certainly when I tried to book on the first day of the lowest level of Friends booking there was little or no availability in stalls/ stalls circle. Very strange and doesn't inspire great confidence in the booking system.
  15. Really annoyed at having to miss seeing this last night, a horrible bug has left me with the most spectacular cough and no way could I inflict that on fellow theatregoers. But he to read everyone's views.
  16. You've certainly thrown yourself in at the deep end! The suggestions you have received seem excellent to me. But I think one of the best pieces of advice to give is to make sure that you see as much dance as possible. Also see some of the foreign companies that visit us.that way you will start to learn how bodies work, how they can express emotion, and you will be able to start deciding why you do, and don't, like.As you will have seen on this site tastes vary widely,but the important thing is that we all enjoy ballet and have built up our knowledge mostly 'just watching ' Good luck

My reference to the bad old days was purely referring to the beaurocracy that was part of our lives, necessitated by complex customs arrangements, Byzantine visa problems for both incoming and outgoing visitors - speak from bitter experience in both cases. Not intended in any way to be a slur on the artists themselves.
  18. Suppose pre EEC it was all visas, work permits, and distrust of any'foreigner' who wanted to come and work here. I believe musicians are also greatly concerned, but as we all know scant concern is shown to those working in the arts in this country so I expect we'll just return to the bad old days.
  19. no, it's not really worry,more idle interest! Sometimes the need to recast productions and even put in unannounced casts can produce pretty marvellous results.
  20. Getting worried about Mayerling - I've booked to see all four casts and any illness/injury may totally disorganised my carefully worked out programme!

  22. I believe I saw Soloviev dancing Spartacus when the Bolshoi came to the Coliseum many years ago. If I am right I remember him as being a rather heavily built man, very much in the Soviet mould. A very powerful dancer.
