  1. Harlequin floors are your best bet! Contact your local dance schools, schools that are Performng Arts schools, dance festivals or theatres to see if any ne has an off cut or even an old floor they at disposing off? Heather Aka Taximom
  2. They will already have in mind a few who they want for main roles as there is usually a costume involved!! However my daughter had a costume adapted for her in a main role as she was younger and smaller than the usual dancer for that role! They will also try out a few combinations depending on who else they might be dancing with. They will also take into account the choreography for that dancer and will adapt or extend depending on the dancers ability. What ever role is given every dancer will be considered for appropriate roles and as much expected from ensemble as solo roles. Heather Aka Taxi Mom
  3. UCAS points will come into play if you are considering a dance degree. You include the details in the qualifications section, mention it in your Personal Statement and the university concerned will usually make you a lower offer however it is entirely at their discretion and I have not heard of anyone considering a non dance degree where their dance exams have had an impact on their offer. Heather Aka Taximom
  4. Have a look at 'the place' for their summer classes for young people. There are cart ain't options for young people and adult to. Is contemporary with ballet but I am not sure about the children's options. Heather Aka Taximom
  5. My DD's device of torture for anyone needing a massage is ..... A golf ball! VERY effective and painful at times!! Heather Aka Taximom
  6. Festivals are unlikely to have anything in their rules regarding this as it is up to parents, dancers, teachers, medical advise etc but I have often seen broken arms in festivals and indeed winning. If there is no pain and cartwheels etc can be changed for leaps then go for it and continue to have fun!! Heather Aka Taximom
  7. I work in an FE college and am the Personal Tutor for music technology, Performing Arts and It. I started to do tutorials about UCAS and student finance when we came back after Easter. It's Personal Statements this coming week. In addition I have talked the P A students through dad as, all have started searching on UCAS to understand how to research decisions. I have recommended they do uni visits to see a course of their choice so they have the start of the knowledge. in addition next week I have a research task for the P A students. I have noted 26 non traditional uni courses and they will research at least one and put the information where others can see it. This covers Ada's as well as student finance, private schools such as Laines and conservatories such as LCDS and royal Conservatoire of Scotland. This means they are helping each other with their choices and it is part of their PA business assignment! Although UCAS closes 15th January 2016 pur internal deadline is 2nd November to enable us to check the forms, allow for changes and for us to write references. Someone will always leave it very late though!! Heather Aka Taximom
  8. I think the explanation of contemporary dance at the beginning was great, especially for anyone who is new to this genre or struggles to understand. The students dancing their own choreography were outstanding and this is a big part of contemporary dance. I would urge anyone who isn't sure of this genre to watch this hour on catch up, the dancers are amazing!! Edited to add signature Heather Aka Taximom
  9. I thought Conor, the youngest and only one not in full time vocational training, was amazing and has such potential for the future. what an amazing choreographer as well. I look forward to seeing a lot of him in the future. Heather Aka Taximom
  10. However the Apprenticeships were not funded when my DD was applying. I think there may be a small pot of funding for LCDS now but you need to be able to support yourself without being able to work! A truly impossible position for graduates. Edited to add, without being able work because you are dancing full time with the company and so unable to work part time to support yourself! Heather Aka Taximom
  11. Richard Alston is one of the biggest contemporary dance company's alongside Rambert. Edited to add signature!! Heather Aka Taximom
  12. Students are generally on degree courses and fully funded through student finance. Certainly at LCDS the facilities are very good. Heather Aka Taximom
  13. Getting back to the original post, Rambert is a great school for a student strong in both ballet and contemporary aged 16!! Heather Aka Taximom
  14. LCDS is the top pure contemporary school in the UK. Rambert will improve its contemporary with the new Principle who has more experience and is more open minded. Central also is good for contemporary. As has already been said Northern Contemporary is also good. Don't forget RCS with their Modern Ballet degree. Heather Aka Taximom
  15. Www.nidms.co.uk/injury-referral/ Will hopefully take you to the correct place!!
  16. Has she considered being referred to the NHS dance clinic? Information on the dance UK site. Certainly worth a try if she hasn't already. Hope all goes well for her. Heather Aka Taximom
  17. Might be worth asking Just Ballet as they have tap shoes!
  18. The important thing here is that she carried on and that is something she should be really proud of. Well done! Heather Aka Taximom
  19. Don't b put off! When my daughter did it she was always one of the smallest for her age but got solo roles with them adapting costumes to fit. She is now 24 in June and still only 5'1" and looks about 14! EYB are brilliant at seeing the potential and working with the talent. Worth every penny in my book whatever role offered! Enjoy!!
  20. Student finance opens on the first Monday in February. The student makes the application and it usually takes about 20 mins if they have their passport, NI number and bank details in front of them. They may also need the UCAS code for the school they are applying to. The student needs to make a note of the CRN - Custmer Reference Number they are given and pass this to the parents. the initial registration process is a common one for the student and each parent alike. It then diverges to a choice between I am a student making an application or I am a parent supporting an application. Both mom and dad / step parents have to register independently to provide their own income details and can take upto an hour to do!!!! As you start to move through the application you can go back and change answers, save and continue or save and exit. It is a straight forward process but requires patience and time. It is better to get it all in place now and then change the school details if you need to. The earlier you apply the shorter the time to get the offers. Some of my students have had their student finance offers for a couple of weeks. if they decide to change their mind about which university they are going to a phone call will sort it out. However the longer you wait to submit the longer the time taken as many students submit in May and afterwards. Good luck with the process!!!! Heather Aka Taximom
  21. Try The Place where richard Alston and london contemporary dance school are. They run a huge dance programme for all ages especially in Saturdays. Heather Aka Taximom
  22. Would encourage you to follow Dr dance's advice about the specialist dance NHS clinics in London and Birmingham. dancers need to show that these NHS facilities are needed so don't see a sports therapist but a dance specialist!! Heather Aka Taximom
  23. All England have contemporary for D and E and senior Contemporary duets, trios etc - possibly also Inters, can't remember. The top contemporary Dance Schools, Northern and London Contemporary Dance School do. Not accept under 18's except in very very rare cases. The dancers need life experience and maturity in their dancing. It is a technique that draws on other experiences and lasts a lifetime. You do need to be able to put emotional experiences into your dance which a younger dancers is unlikely to have. Contemporary as we understand it is not the contemporary you often see on Dance Moms so don't be misled!! Contemporary also has many different techniques - compare Matthew Bourne to Mark Morris to Richard Alston to Martha Graham to Merce Cunningham to Henri Ogwike! And enjoy!!
  24. I would echo the royal conservatoire of Scotland, Northern Contemporary and London Vontemporary Dance all ope which are fully funded by student finance and degrees. They are not private schools. labantrinity Laban is also a possibility but not too much classical work. LCDS and Northern do ballet for contemporary dance, I expect Lapban do but I don't know. Heather Aka Taximom
  25. A number of forum members have links and experiences with local festivals. If you want to give an idea of where you are I am sure someone will provide some suggestions for festivals.
