  1. I've just read the sad news that television script writer and animal rights activist Carla Lane has passed away at the age of 87. She is best remembered for The Liver Birds, Bread and Butterflies (which I absolutely loved). http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/liver-birds-bread-creator-carla-11410199
  2. It's very easy to post a link. Highlight the URL of the link you wish to paste. Copy it by right clicking and choosing the copy option. Set up your post on the forum. Right click where you want to insert the link. Choose the paste option. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
  3. You can be a British citizen without having been born here. I know of a couple of dancers (not necessarily RB) who have become British citizens.
  4. I think that is probably right (pardon the pun). I got notification of an event in Birmingham towards the end of June, which I sadly can't go to.
  5. The lady who used to live next door to us described herself as a retired tailoress. I think you are right, as she had worked for a bespoke tailor.
  6. Are we only talking females and RB? A number of dancers are from Commonwealth countries and potentially always would have been employed by RB on graduation. Who knows how Kevin O'Hare will progress the company. He obviously has a budget and was not in post when most of the current principals were employed. We've had several similar discussions over the years - here is one example: http://www.balletcoforum.com/index.php?/topic/11818-where-does-it-all-lead/?hl=graduate There is no easy answer and I would guess that many other parents in many other countries have similar conversations.
  7. But, being realistic, would you accept that far more students graduate than there are classical jobs for in the UK. And surely that must be the same in France and anywhere else.
  8. I thought the RB was "British and Commonwealth" before the EU.
  9. While culling today's links I have come across this new novel: http://www.digitaljournal.com/pr/2956064
  10. Northern Ballet took 10 new dancers on last year (including apprentices) - 5 of them are British and trained in British vocational schools. Kate_N has made some excellent points. Just to say, too, that with only 5 "big" companies as well as the smaller companies like Ballet Black, Ballet Cymru - if you look at the number of students graduating and the number of places available it is obvious that only a small percentage of those graduating will get jobs with British companies. And those jobs are dependent on vacancies being available at the companies. British-trained dancers are lucky that our world-class training gives them job opportunities all over the world.

  12. There is the issue of (currently) non-EU workers having to earn at least £35K to stay here eventually. Presumably that would apply to non-UK workers if we come out. I don't think anyone except the top-flight dancers at the Royal earn huge amounts so that could affect the lower ranks of the UK companies.
  13. Sorry Alison, it's hot and sunny here in Liverpool!
  14. Hello BalletAims and welcome to the Forum. Thanks for the information and good luck to your DD!
  15. Hello Goldenlilly and welcome to the Forum. I have moved your post to the more appropriate Doing Dance Forum, although there is still a link in the News Forum.

  17. Dear members, I should stress at the outset that this is not an April Fool!!! It would seem that you have all been taken in and DID NOT see favourite members of the Royal Ballet dancing Obsidian Tear: http://www.broadwayworld.com/bwwdance/article/Boston-Ballet-to-Stage-OBSIDIAN-TEAR-in-London-May-28-20160527 I've lost the power of speech! 18. Northern Ballet is hosting its second Choreographic Laboratory over the next couple of weeks. There is a public event on 16th June at Quarry Hill in Leeds. Some details have been released on the NB website: https://northernballet.com/tell-tale-steps-2/about-the-lab The five choreographers who will be participating in the Laboratory this year are: Toby Batley (Northern Ballet) Lucia Solari (Northern Ballet) Carlos Pons Guerra (De Nada Dance Theatre) Charlotte Edmonds (Royal Ballet Young Choreographer Programme) Morgan Runacre-Temple (Ballet Ireland) https://northernballet.com/tell-tale-steps-2/choreographers
  19. I didn't know that! A few years ago they were filming auditions at the Birmingham Hippodrome. I have never seen so many people milling around. It was quite alarming!
  20. Well I got treated too as it happens but if I had had to pay my share I really would not have felt ripped off!
  21. I never ceased to be amazed at the prices of (in particular) West End musicals! They are starting to make ballet at Covent Garden look cheap!!!
  22. I've just seen on Twitter that the Stormtroopers on BGT are from Jelli...
  23. Well afternoon tea at The Savoy was absolutely fabulous. Not only was the food delicious (and very plentiful) but the service was superb. We were made to feel very special indeed.
