Nana Lily Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 Looking at current Principles and upcoming young dancers in UK Companies who would be your ideal couple and why?
JulieW Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 So, if we're talking any dancers from any companies - Max Westwell and Callie Roberts. Both young, talented and good looking ;-) (Bear in mind, I don't watch enough ballet to know all the dancers really well, but I know they'd fit my "brief") 2
Jan McNulty Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Oooo Nana Lily, that's an interesting question. Into the realms of fantasy! From BRB: Momoko Hirata, Callie Roberts, Laura Jane Gibson, Maureya Lebowitz, Tyrone Singleton, Steven Monteith, Mathias Dingman, Lachlan Monaghan From NB: Dreda Blow, Antoinette Brooks Daw, Lori Gilchrist, Abby Prudames, Javier Torres, Ashley Dixon, John Hull, Nicola Gervasi Nothing to do with R&J but a few of us were nattering in Leeds last week and we all agreed that Martha Leebolt is born to dance the role of Tatiana in Onegin. In fact we would love to see NB do Onegin! 1
Anna C Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 I would absolutely love to see Max Westwell dance Romeo. ENB aren't doing the Nureyev version next year as they're doing R&J in the round, but I do hope Max gets cast as Romeo. I agree about Martha Leebolt, by the way - she'd be a superb Tatiana. As would ENB's Elena Glurdjidze, IMHO. 2
sonik1965 Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 interesting question RB: Natalia Osipova & Carlos Acosta BRB: celine gittens (looks so innocent) & mathias dingman or Tyrone Singleton 1
Jan McNulty Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Oh, how could I have forgotten Celine Gittens?? What a numpty am I! And how could I have forgotten William Bracewell and Isaac Lee Baker amongst my fantasy Romeos.
Peach3 Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Celine Gittens and Max Westwell or Matthias Dingman 1
Belljul Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 For me it's Scottish Ballet's Sophie Martin and Christopher Harrison. Sigh. 2
JulieW Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 (I'm really not keen on Carlos A as Romeo - sorry Sonik - just too old and "butch" for me ) 3
capybara Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 For chemistry which transcends the footlights as well as for their beautiful dancing: Daria and Vadim. Otherwise, one can come up with wonderful established Juliets (Elena; Alina - both to be on show, surely, at the RAH next June) or potentially wonderful Juliets (Natalia;Yuhui; Francesca; Nancy). But it is difficult to envisage them dancing with the other convincing Romeos (such as Ed and Rupert) - although I suppose Ivan (Putrov) still meets the UK criterion and he was superb, in my view, in the RB's 2007 run By the way, in case there is room for doubt, Max danced Romeo to Sarah McIlroy's Juliet when ENB staged Nureyev's R&J three years ago. But you haven't yet answered your own question, NanaLily! 1
Anna C Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Yes indeed capybara; his performance in the Agony and Ecstasy documentary looked wonderful - which is why I'm sad that instead of doing Nureyev's production at the Coli, ENB are doing R&J in the round at the less accessible (both in terms of disabled access and location) Royal Albert Hall. :-( I would have loved to have seen Max dance Romeo at the Coli.
aileen Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 It's a shame that Esteban has gone. I never saw him as Romeo but there is a gorgeous photograph of him and Begona as R&J at Markova House. He certainly looks the part: youthful, handsome and dark-eyed.
sonik1965 Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 (I'm really not keen on Carlos A as Romeo - sorry Sonik - just too old and "butch" for me ) maybe but still a great dancer 1
nottsballetlover Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 (edited) The last R&J I saw was Cojacaru/Kobborg but am convinced I will see superb new partnerships this season at RB. Yes, I have a ticket for Acosta/Osipova on December but that's not my dream cast! My dream cast is Hamilton/Watson - I'm so excited to be seeing this cast. For me, they are both such incredibly powerful dance actors. Edited September 16, 2013 by nottsballetlover 2

chrischris Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 (edited) And I'm hoping she'll have relaxed into the role a bit more this time around. I didn't see them together last time, but i've booked for them this time. Can't see them being well paired together, and I can't see Watson as a romantic lead, but i'm looking forward to seeing them, and hopefully being proved wrong. It's a shame she isn't dancing with her original Romeo, Rupert, as they have a lot of chemistry. I wish i'd seen Rojo as Juliet as everyone raves about her in that role. Anna C Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Book to see her next year at the RAH, chrischris! 1
chrischris Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Book to see her next year at the RAH, chrischris! Oooohh didn't realise she was doing it. Do they do the Macmillan version at the ENB?
Jan McNulty Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 No, it's Derek Deane's "In the round" production at ROH. I saw it some years ago and really enjoyed it. He also did a decent proscenium version and recently the company performed the production that Nureyev created for them. 2
Anna C Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Oooohh didn't realise she was doing it. Do they do the Macmillan version at the ENB? Here's the press release about it; I believe she'll be dancing with Carlos Acosta - see page 2: http://www.ballet.org.uk/media/filer_public/2013/06/10/english_national_ballet__2014_press_release.pdf

I saw Rojo & Acosta as R&J a few years ago and it was the most moving performance I have seen. I am going to try Nunez & Soares this season. Dream cast? I'm not sure yet
capybara Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Tamara and Carlos are cast for ENB's Derek Deane R&J at the RAH on the 11th, 13th, 15th and 17th June 2014. No news on other casting yet. 1
alison Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Rojo, I remember from 1997 or whenever it was, is perfectly capable of moving the entire Royal Albert Hall on her own 1
Jan McNulty Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 She was as an even younger whippersnapper when I saw her in the Cranko version with Scottish Ballet! 1
lakeylakes Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 I hope this does not sound to trivial or silly but could we maybe not have a same sex version to chime in with our times. A Romeo and Julian or Rhoda and Juliette. I am sure the sword fighting would be no problem to a well trained Royal ballerina. 1

loveclassics Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 That would be awesome Not sure that would work - can you see Friar Lawrence performing a same-sex marriage? And the rival clan problem would hardly be noticed.
Ian Macmillan Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 OK - this thread has drifted sufficiently for me to propose Paula Alonso and Denis Puzanov from Cathy Marston's Bern:Ballet production of Julia und Romeo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_p60al8GsM NB the inversion in the title, and that Paula was the young Annamiggeli in Witch Hunt at the Linbury back in May. 1
lakeylakes Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Not sure that would work - can you see Friar Lawrence performing a same-sex marriage? And the rival clan problem would hardly be noticed. Ah but Friar Lawrence is not of our times. A lady Bishop from Wales should be available soon. Clans are more difficult people in same sex relationships do seem to be wiser than Hetros. There were two aggressive gay men in some episodes of Seinfeld who could be drafted in.

Bit in asterixes could be construed as a bit of a generalisation!
lakeylakes Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Definitely a too sweeping generalisation but probably has some truth in it just as the sweeping generalisation that women are better then men. The women better then men is proved to an extent by the much lower level of violent crime committed by women.
alison Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 You'll have to wait at least another 5 years for women bishops in this country. Could we maybe get this discussion back on track a bit? 2
