This has been my fabulous “COPPELIA Double-header Weekend,” as I’ve enjoyed not only this sassy ooh-la-la Petit version from Japan but also the traditional “Russian version” by Balanchine (After Petipa-Ceccheti) as danced impeccably by PNB (Seattle), in an archival film.

 

Reminder that PNB’s Rep 5 Coppelia is streaming this weekend...a couple of more days to catch it (for $29 or $39 fee, depending on options).

Finally got round to watching Metamorphosis; what madness stopped me watching it sooner!! If you have yet to have the pleasure - don't deny yourself any longer than you have to. Super

Fabulous principals - Ono’s Swanilda is adorable. Watanabe so strong & sleek as Franz. This is the version that Munich do.  I love this version (I’ve seen it live twice with different casts)  ... Dr Coppelius is less of a fool as in other versions, and more of gentleman just looking for love.  He gains our empathy over the ballet.  
 

Igor Zelensky brought this version of Coppelia with him to Munich from the Stanislavsky where he had procured it to highlight Sergei Polunin in Moscow and in London.   The are numerous superb video clips on YouTube.  Here’s one ...

The Manon masterclasses were wonderful.   Special coaching from Massimo Murru who partnered Sylvie Guillem regularly.  Sadly I never saw him dance. He coached the fiendishly difficult first act Des Grieux solo.  Marco Agostina grabbed my attention ... he had the mood even in rehearsal and with a mask.
 

Alessandra Ferri coaching in pointe shoes herself was particularly special ... the most beautiful feet in pointe shoes.  She coached the brothel solo.  All the ballerinas Virna Toppi, Nicoletta Manni, Martina Arduino are going to be really good in this 👏👏👏

The Grand Theatre at Geneva will be streaming at 8 pm local time / 7 pm UK time on 27 May a double bill to Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps with choreographies by Jeroen Verbruggen and Andonis Foniadakis. The stream will be on GTG digital.

I didn't realise that Ferri's masterclass was also on Manon. I'll have to catch up on that. I watched Murru's live. I got the impression from the number of corrections he was giving each of the dancers that two of the men had probably danced Des Grieux before while two were new to the role. Does anyone know if that is the case? I tried looking up La Scala's website afterwards but couldn't find biographies from the dancers on there & 3 of them were previously unknown to me (Andrijashenko I saw doing Romeo with the RB).

sadly I don’t think the masterclasses are accessible after the live stream.

 

the gala from Saturday 15/5 is still available on their YouTube.

These Masterclasses look very interesting. I got the original link from the London Ballet Circle but then Danceworks themselves sent this follow up email after I purchased the streamed masterclass with Vadim Muntagirov which takes place next Sunday lunchtime the 30th May at 1pm-2.30, price £9. I assume it is only available when it is streamed and not left up for a while as there is no mention of this but I'll try and check and let the Forum know. 6th June sees another Masterclass by Alexander Campbell and there are a whole series of further classes for all different areas of dance, including other classical ones by Brandon Laurence and also Marianela Nunez. I think Vadim's is the only one bookable at the moment.

Yellowface.org presents an archival film of The Washington Ballet performing Choo-San Goh’s FIVES (to Ernest Bloch’s music) next Monday, 31 May. Gorgeous neo-classical work performed on pointe...a repertoire standard of the company in its early years.

I just watched the New Works livestream from Stuttgart. Overall wonderful but...did anyone else notice how the quality of the filming went way down for the final work shown (the Forsythe)? While the three world premieres were filmed with multiple cameras and proper variety of far/mid/close-up shots, the Forsythe employed only one far-off camera, even during pas de deux, with darkish lighting. Well, at least this initial showing was free, thanks to Porsche. :)

That's how Mr. Forsythe wanted it - a single camera.

Isn't Blake Works simply spectacular? Watch it while it's online, everybody, such a wonderful piece!

To be honest, I would have appreciated Blake Works more had I been able to see it clearly...and popsy-classical hybrids, with bopping ballerinas, aren’t my cup of tea. On the other hand, the three world premieres were TERRIFIC  in movement-to-music quality, not just the exquisite filmings ...particularly the Clug piece, Source, with amazing tasteful-modern commissioned score by Lazer!
