She blew me away with her interpretation, which was different from any I had seen before. I am getting goosebumps just thinking about it now. I believe that her Romeo & Juliet duets were what she was originally famous for, Sim, in the same way that Natalia Osipova was first famous for her Don Quixotes, of which I saw several of her early Kitris that were 'the Bolshoi' for me. It’s always a pleasure to see live performances and the orchestra was great. I would love to see any of/all of The pharaoh’s daughter, coppelia, Giselle, Raymonda, Paquita, la bayadere, Corsaire. And Esmeralda .... I saw that at StaatsBallett Berlin which was the Bolshoi version and I really enjoyed it, real live goats and all👍
Shade
Yes - never seen Esmeralda live. Would love to see Obraztsova - she pulled out of the RB swan lake that I had tickets for sadly.

Both productions were the work of Yuri Burlaka and Vasily Medvedev. Esmeralda has been out of the Bolshoi rep since Burlaka's tenure, and I fear that it will not be performed there again in my lifetime.

That’s a shame Now Voyager - the art can ill afford to lose these productions.
assoluta
Yuri Burlaka produced a new version of "Esmeralda", more faithful to the original, according to what I know. This is why his earlier effort at Bolshoi is put to rest.
Shade
Thanks Assoluta - so is Esmeralda performed at Bolshoi theatre still?
assoluta
"Esmeralda" is performed at the Samara Theatre where Yuri Burlaka is Artistic Director. They showed their "Esmeralda" earlier this year in Moscow.
stucha
Burlaka has indeed made a version of Esmeralda for Samara Theatre. The production of Esmeralda shown at the Bolshoi in July this year was that of the visiting Rostov ballet company in the version of Vladimir Bourmeister. https://www.bolshoi.ru/en/performances/542389/
maryrosesatonapin
According to Wiki, Esmeralda is also in New Jersey Ballet's rep. In spite of having lived in NYC for a while (some time ago) I have never seen them dance - are they any good?
Bruce Wall
I caught a production of Esmeralda in Minsk while I was there for work. It is also in the rep of the (I thought when visiting for work recently fairly solid) company in Lviv.
toursenlair
I saw Burlaka's Bolshoi version of Esmeralda in Bratislava (National Theatre of Slovakia) a couple of years ago and enjoyed it very much.
Don Q Fan
I'm very glad to read so much enthusiasm for Esmeralda. I don't remember the detail of the performance I saw in Berlin apart from knowing I enjoyed it very much and as I said before they had live goats!! stucha
There are a couple of versions on line. This is the Kremlin ballet version.
Beryl H
I saw a production of Esmeralda at the theatre that used to be the Maly in St. Petersburg, in the 1980's, it's very hard to remember much apart from the beautiful theatre, sorry to hear that the Bolshoi version, which I always wanted to see, has been dropped from the repertoire, thanks for posting the above video! Dawnstar
Thanks for this @Amelia. I haven't the faintest idea what they're saying but enjoyed the footage of Spartacus & Swan Lake.
