Josephine Posted March 21, 2019 Posted March 21, 2019 (edited) This will include BBC broadcasts during the week Sun 31 March-Sat 6 April, with a live streaming day on Fri 5 April. https://www.bbc.co.uk/events/errz3d/live/c4rp5v Edited March 21, 2019 by Josephine 1
alison Posted March 21, 2019 Posted March 21, 2019 Hmm, "It will show just why this country is a world leader in dance. Aimed at ‘those who love dance as well as those who don’t yet know they love dance', #DancePassion will run across television, radio and online on the BBC from Sunday 31 March to Saturday 6 April, with a live streaming day on Friday 5 April." Well, let's see what transpires.
zxDaveM Posted March 22, 2019 Posted March 22, 2019 I believe it will feature Viviana Durante's new 'Seven Deadly Sins' at Wilton Hall, but exactly how much, I can't say, see below: 1
Josephine Posted March 22, 2019 Author Posted March 22, 2019 Also Akram Khan's Giselle, by English National Ballet: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0003vk6 1
alison Posted March 22, 2019 Posted March 22, 2019 The BBC's website is now officially hopeless: you can't easily access anything beyond next Friday, 29th March. I could look in my listings magazine if I only wanted to look that far ahead! I've tried the Radio Times site, but BBC Four, where I'm assuming everything will be, is blank. If you do find anything, please post it here.
alison Posted March 22, 2019 Posted March 22, 2019 Remember the days when the BBC would have announced this with some degree of fanfare? A press release months in advance? Was there one?
alison Posted March 22, 2019 Posted March 22, 2019 Apparently there was, 10 days ago: https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2019/dance-passion The main bit is as follows (follow the link for fuller details of the livestream and programmes): "A celebration of the UK’s flourishing dance scene in collaboration with One Dance UK. Dancers rigged to 3D motion tracking bodysuits will show how science is pushing the boundaries of choreography, as part of an unprecedented celebration of the UK’s dance scene, which will also include exclusive rehearsals and insights from some of the country’s leading practitioners. These are just some of the highlights of #DancePassion, a dance festival being organised by BBC Arts in collaboration with One Dance UK, along with leading names and exciting new talent. Aimed at those who love dance as well as those who don’t yet know they love dance, #DancePassion will run across television, radio and online on the BBC from Sunday 31 March to Saturday 6 April, with a live streaming day on Friday 5 April. Highlights also include: A #DancePassion live streaming day featuring 11 hours of performance, rehearsals and behind the scenes insights from across the UK. Organisations to use the BBC’s dance archive in innovative ways to tell compelling dance stories. A week-long focus on dance across television, radio and online including performances of Giselle and Atomos on BBC Four, Sound Of Dance on BBC Radio 3 and dance specials on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 6 Music. Jonty Claypole Director, BBC Arts, says: “Dance truly is a powerful and transformative art form. I’m thrilled that we’re working with One Dance UK and the whole sector to demonstrate exactly why this country is a world leader in dance. "#DancePassion is for audiences who love dance as well as for those who don’t yet know they love dance. Whether it’s ballet, bhangra or ballroom - at one of our ‘hubs’ or at home - this week aims to get the whole nation moving in a celebration of dance.” Andrew Hurst, Chief Executive Officer of One Dance UK, says: “We are delighted to partner with the BBC to promote the very first #DancePassion and launch this exciting national celebration of dance, showcasing the cutting-edge creativity, artistry, and talent leading the way in dance in the UK today.”" 1

alison Posted March 22, 2019 Posted March 22, 2019 Congratulations, Josephine! And thank you. I must admit, the concept of hiphop "saving" ballet sounds a bit strange 2

Lizbie1 Posted March 22, 2019 Posted March 22, 2019 (edited) You may laugh, but there's some terrific-looking stuff embedded in Ivy Lin's review of Kyle Abraham's The Runaway at NYCB, linked below. (I am indebted to Ivy Lin for the intelligence that hip hop is involved, I wouldn't have had a clue.) https://humbledandoverwhelmed.blogspot.com/2019/02/nycb-winter-diaries-justin-pecks.html Edited March 22, 2019 by Lizbie1 Bottom link didn't work out properly. 1

I must admit, the concept of hiphop "saving" ballet sounds a bit strange Looking at the line-up for that programme, I see lots of BAME classical dancers and only - I think - Homer Bryant coming from a professional background that involves hip-hop influences. I wonder what the angle will be. 1
Josephine Posted March 24, 2019 Author Posted March 24, 2019 This now includes: Sound of Dance David Bintley BBC Radio 3 Sat 6 April 3pmhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00040cm
alison Posted March 29, 2019 Posted March 29, 2019 Thanks, John. Relieved to know this will be available on demand as well, because I've managed to book myself up rather heavily for the 5th!
alison Posted March 29, 2019 Posted March 29, 2019 Have we actually found a link to all the TV/radio programmes, BTW? I can't see a way of getting to it from there.
Odyssey Posted March 30, 2019 Posted March 30, 2019 Really disappointed, but not surprised, that there appears to be no promotion in the way of previewing programmes on the BBC, particularly Giselle . I don’t have the Radio Times but would be interested to know if they have run a feature on this initiative. 1
Jan McNulty Posted March 31, 2019 Posted March 31, 2019 Running order for 5th April: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/13k4DfWMQqTB1znP4nggBk3/full-running-order-for-dancepassion-live-on-friday-5-april
alison Posted March 31, 2019 Posted March 31, 2019 Courtesy of today's Links page, this Guardian article https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2019/mar/31/dance-popular-culture-revival-of-high-art suggests that the whole season runs for a month. I guess we shall see ...
Josephine Posted April 1, 2019 Author Posted April 1, 2019 This online feature about Mona Inglesby went live today as part of the Dance Passion season: https://canvas-story.bbcrewind.co.uk/sites/searchingformona/ 2
taxi4ballet Posted April 1, 2019 Posted April 1, 2019 (edited) Whoopee, so many programmes about dance... shame that a lot of them are on the radio. Again. Edited April 1, 2019 by taxi4ballet edited for rubbish spelling
Lynette H Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 As well as the running order for 5 April provided above, here's a link to all the material available on demand via i player https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/CryZGNzjl8y2F4ZRYb5PWx/dancepassion-on-demand Scroll down - there's a lot of material there.
Douglas Allen Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 2 hours ago, Lynette H said: Scroll down - there's a lot of material there. Sadly, just not much about ballet. Thanks, Lynette H , for finding this source, I'd managed to miss it altogether.
trog Posted April 4, 2019 Posted April 4, 2019 You can view the press release about this event in Birmingham here https://mailchi.mp/dancexchange/bbc-dancepassion-at-dx-5-april?e=6fc76aa788
alison Posted April 4, 2019 Posted April 4, 2019 Don't forget the livestream later on today: Janet posted the details on Sunday.
Lynette H Posted April 5, 2019 Posted April 5, 2019 Links to all the featured segments are available here on demand https://www.bbc.co.uk/events/errz3d/play/p075mx13 Very much worth your time. Scroll down , then across for the considerable number of segments available. A few glitches on the live transmission - each segment didn't appear immediately, you needed to keep refreshing and couldn't always get it until 3 Mins in or so (and so missed any intro and context for each). This may be better in the recording. The BBC made a real effort to present from around the UK so there are representations from Birmingham, Belfast, Wales, London, Scotland and others. 3
Jan McNulty Posted April 5, 2019 Posted April 5, 2019 So far I've watched part of the Phoenix rehearsal, Kenneth Tindall's new duet and the de Nada rehearsal - all from Leeds. I found the short rehearsal segment from de Nada's Mariposa incredibly moving. I will be catching up on much more tomorrow. It's been a fabulous concept which I hope will be repeated in the future. Thanks for the link Lynette.
alison Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Wayne McGregor's Atomos is on BBC4 tomorrow night (or rather, tonight), I think at 10 pm or so.
