  1. The synopsis was posted on one of the pillars in the Linbury foyer. Only helped a little in understanding, mind, but I thought the Bruce by far the strongest piece of the evening.
  2. Due to injury, Naghdi replaces Choe as Olga in the Onegin matinée today (11th).
  3. I think the chances of the Cranko estate agreeing to a recording with Osipova are nil.
  4. I was sitting in the front row and heard her actual scream, and it wasn't valedictory but filled with anquish.
  5. I believe the theatre will be dark over the summer to allow the refurbishment to begin.
  6. I thought last night's conducting was slightly better than on Tuesday, but still dreadful. I have stopped applauding Dominic Grier, but not the orchestra. It has taken a lot of willpower to resist booing him, but that might yet happen. A drastic improvement is needed, and quickly.
  7. That's the important point - it was a rehearsal. It was not, and should not be treated as, a performance. He may fall apart in actual performance (I hope he doesn't but one never knows).
  8. Lamb's performance as Tatiana is exquisite; it's full of detail and precision, technically strong and emotional without over-doing it. I'd love to see her dancing with a stronger partner than Hristov (who last night came across somewhat cartoonish - may be better from further back though, as I was in the front row - and sometimes underpowered to the extent of not quite making the steps). Hristov (and the corps) certainly not helped by some very dodgy tempi from Dominic Grier, who seemed to have a complete disregard for the dancers. Sim, I agree that you should see Lamb's performance but there are only two left, both matinées. The corps' run jeté lines were mentioned above. Last night it was impossible for the dancers to complete these in time to the music as it was too fast. It's a shame, as these lines have been very, very good so far this run and are one of the highlights of the ballet for me.
  9. Judith said: "It was a bit of a surprise that a list of winners culled from almost 400 nominations – and from the votes of 60 critics – could end up with as many overlaps and duplications as those at the National dance awards. But there were some stonkingly good performances on the UK dance stage last year that deserved recognition. Few who saw Natalia Osipova’s shockingly reimagined Giselle or Jonathan Goddard’s juggernaut of a Dracula would quarrel with them getting outstanding dancer awards for those roles. And given the standard of their dancing in other productions last year, it’s not such a stretch to award them prizes in the best dancer category, either. It’s the first time in the history of these awards that two dancers have won both categories in a single year." I see nothing critical of the double wins in that.
  10. The finalists for this year's competition are: Isabelle Brouwers Anjuli Hudson Jeanette Kakareka Katja Khaniukova Vitor Menezes James Streeter Max Westwell Jinhao Zhang Announcement can be found here.
  11. They are operated by remote control, rather than a timer. I think they just need a bit of refurbishment and TLC but they worked OK for the final show (except for one single red on the "all change" bush).

  13. Yes, Washington & Chicago only get Don Q. Chicago was originally meant to have the triple bill as well, but that has now changed.
  14. This is what Kevin O'Hare said: The season ends with a triple bill of Jerome Robbins' Afternoon of a Faun and In the Night, with another chance to see Song of the Earth. "What's been amazing about this last season, and the season before, is that the mixed bills are so full. It's hard to get a ticket – it's 97 point whatever per cent full every night. So I think it's very important that we show those programmes as much as possible, or works from that programme. I thought it was a nice idea to bring one of the works back into another programme. "I love Afternoon of a Faun, and we'll be doing In the Night in Copenhagen, so it makes sense. You have to look at programming and scheduling, making sure we've got enough time to do everything we want to do." Taken from a Dancing Times article which you can find here.
  15. Given that there is only one ticket left on sale for the entire run of Swan Lake, I don't think management mind...
  16. Then the box office, not for the first time, is wrong. Bus driver strike only affects East London buses (though that includes the RV1).
  17. Plus let's all remember that the last "standard" working day was last Tuesday. It is highly likely that the production page will be updated, and possibly an email sent out, this morning (Monday). FWIW I'm still going tonight.
  18. They've done this before. It's nothing unusual, just the standard pre-performance announcement.
