  1. Speaking of Vienna… We cannot forget the Vienna Philharmonic’s annual New Year’s Day concert, always featuring a couple of works performed by the Vienna State Ballet. Some details in English on this PBS (US) website, including the full list of musical offerings. One of the ballets seems to be the “1,001 Nights Waltz” by Strauss, Jr., filmed in Schoenbrunn. https://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/great-performance-from-vienna-the-new-years-celebration-2022-about/13282/ Additional info (German) + lovely photos on this site: https://tv.orf.at/program/orf2/neujahrsko550.html This is telecast across the world on Jan 1 & streamed soon after. Check your local listings. Happy 2022! 🥂
  2. Some excitement in the new year! Jan 14 @ 19:30 (CET) - 18:30 UK/13:30 eastern USA: Vienna State Ballet’s livestream of a triple bill that includes the rarely-seen Liebeslieder Walzer by Balanchine/Brahms; Robbins’ Other Dances; and L. Child’s’ Concerto: https://play.wiener-staatsoper.at/event/0a2c4bf1-21f0-4992-8635-fe0489d76e31 These are usually available for 24 hrs. after the initial stream. Free.
  3. Thanks for the clarification. I already saw the April/May streamed program as a subscriber…a half-year ago. It was lovely. So I’ll continue with plans to see the show in NYC this August 2022.
  4. Me too! A total work of art. I look forward to multiple repeated viewings while it’s still up. I love the score, which seems to borrow from the classics in some spots. I recognized Ashton’s Apparitions (Liszt) towards the end of part one.
  5. Hi, jmhopton. Sorry but I don’t understand. Did you read or hear that an upcoming Sarasota 3ple bill will be filmed for possible streaming? I won’t travel if I can pay to watch a performance at home.
  6. Happy news from Sarasota on the Ashton front…substantial ballets on the horizon! The troupe’s August 2022 visit to NYC’s Joyce Theater will consist of a triple bill that includes two (2) Ashtons: Birthday Offering and the rare Varii Capricci. Woohoo!!! 🥳 https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/The-Joyce-Theater-Announces-SpringSummer-2022-20211217 Hopefully, this portends a return to substantial Ashton programming during their 2022/2023 home season.
  7. Oh, I had forgotten. Thanks for the reminder. The brief (13-min?) work was part of the the last digital program in May 2021, too.
  8. Ashton ballets are safe in Sarasota only when they are programmed. Alas, there are none this season. Maybe in 2022/2023?
  9. The revival of Apparitions in Sarasota three years ago was better regarded than the ‘80s LFB one. It didn’t seem long to me. Gomes was fantastic as the poet.
  10. I just received my email from the ROH about the new timing. Hoorah! Glad that the first access (streaming premiere) wasn’t delayed to 2022.
  11. I caught the “new lockdown” repetition of this program yesterday. Fantastic! Schlaepfer’s Marsch, Walter, Polka is a fresh and witty look at favorites from the Strauss family, with truly ingenious costumes, some based on Hungarian folkloric dresses. I’ll never think the same way as before when hearing the Radetzky March at the annual New Year concerts from the Musikverein! Balanchine’s Symphony in C was neatly rendered by the Vienna dancers & magnificently filmed. I’m looking forward to the Dec 4 “new lockdown repeat” of the September 21 stream…Balanchine’s Symphony in Three Movements among three works to be shown for free. DEC 4 @ 19:00 CET: TANZE BILDER SINFONIEN https://play.wiener-staatsoper.at/?fbclid=IwAR2q41MDKNQUidIlNvMsyIVXKXhDnaD_Ur7d9izjNZoHY4l7MBdl09KBjHs I registered to the channel for free (“bitte app instalieren” button). It was easier to do from a regular computer than from my mobile phone.
  12. Correction: In the above-linked Flora film, the galop with fauns and nymphs begins at the 39.30 mark (not 36.30). That’s the tune that is used in the Kazakh Rosebud, though slightly altered. A clever re-orchestration but definitely there, to my ears.
  13. Belated thanks for all of this information, Li Tai Po! I’m glad that I didn’t offend the artistic team in Kazakhstan with my questions because, at the end of the day, it was a grand achievement. A unique work of art. So the (beautiful) score of this production is indeed a pastiche of various other Drigo works. The selections are superb; kudos to the Kazakh arranger/orchestrator! By the way, the Mariinsky’s Flora’s Awakening (Sergei Vikharev’s recon) includes a large-scaled-corps galop that commences with three fauns playing their pipes, before waves of nymphs begin to enter. It’s that galop that we hear in the Kazakh Romance of the Rosebud. Let me see if I can find it on YouTube…here it is. The dance begins at about the 36.30-minute mark. (I love it! Hard to get it out of my head.) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=h7eAalYlREY
  14. While I’m glad that the stream will not happen during the jolly-holidays season, I sure hope that it won’t come in the midst of the busy Winter Olympics/figure skating season. During Olympic years, Jan/Feb is solid skating for me & many other fans of both passions (e.g., various qualifying Nationals, Europeans, Four Continents, Russian skating concoctions, etc.). Oh well, after the pandemic, we should all be grateful for so much to enjoy, right? The more, the merrier! 🤪
  15. That’s not the point. They should be forthcoming with folks who committed to purchase/view in good faith.
  16. Good catch, Alison. It would be great if the ROH would let those who pre-paid for the stream know about it first.
  17. So kind of you! I just love these ballets and the sweet late-Imperial Drigo works, in general…ever since I saw the NYCB (Martins ) ver of Magic Flute.
  18. Thanks again for this topic and for the link to Monday’s premiere performance! I’m curious if Li Tai Po or anyone else may expound on the musical score for this production. Most of it is recognizable Drigo; for example, I noted large segments from Enchanted Forest (which Ratmansky used in the Bolshoi Corsair), The Pearl (much used in Konstantin Sergeyev’s classroom work, From Lande to Vagabova), Flora’s Awakening (galop for Fauns), and even one number from Drigo’s The Magical Flute. So here’s my question: Is any of the music of this performance from Drigo’s 1904 Romance of the Rosebud and the Butterfly? Or is this a mix of various Drigo scores…put together for a “reimagining” of the ballet in Kazakhstan? Also - Is it true that this particular work is among those in the Harvard Collection of Stepanov notes? If so, it’s news to me, as it’s not on the list that I have. Maybe notes for other ballets exist, apart from the Harvard group, in other locations? I know that not all of the works notated by N. Sergeyev & his team made it out of the USSR…e.g., Don Q and other famous Petipa works are not at Harvard. Where did the stager, Medvedev, find Stepanov notations to Romance of the Rosebud…? I totally love this ballet, so richly staged, fit for a Tsar’s viewing. Job well done, students & team of the Kazakh Ballet Academy! I ask the questions because it fascinates me, not due to dislike or to be a troublemaker. Thanks, in advance, for any insights and clarifications. 💕 🌸 👏
  19. Any update from the ROH about the new dates for The Dante Project streaming? They’ve been kind enough to offer us a refund but I’d prefer to see the show.
  20. Thanks Sabine0308. It's always good to hear both sides of a story. I believe that Bühnenschiedsgericht is a "Court of Arbitration for Theatre". "Calls to Order" seem to be what we (in US) term "reprimands" or "written warnings".
  21. The shady line is with some error-landed self-publishing bloggers and “bachtrackers” rather than the Marina Harsses of this world, who are true pros.
  22. I suppose that some companies no longer employ or contract PR professionals...and are looking to achieve “good p.r.” for the price of free comp tickets (to wannabe critics looking for this). The era of honest traditional dance criticism is over, alas.
