  1. Probably it’s her knowledge of Balanchine? see photo… Wish that I could hear this show!
  2. For most people, all over the world… New Year’s Day 2023 will feature the annual New Year’s Celebration concert with the Vienna Philharmonic and dance numbers with the Vienna State Ballet, this year choreographed by Ashley Page. General news, from Vienna: https://www.wienerphilharmoniker.at/en/newyearsconcert/newyearsconcert2023 From the USA’s PBS network: https://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/from-vienna-the-new-years-celebration-2023/14197/ The Vienna Boys and Girls Choirs will also be featured.
  3. I still have and treasure Dame Beryl Grey’s 1958 tome, Red Curtain Up, about her tour to the USSR…before other Westerners. May she rest in peace.
  4. Luke Schaufuss is a Principal at Sarasota Ballet. https://www.sarasotaballet.org/luke-schaufuss He was to have danced Romeo in the March 2020 Ashton R&J in Sarasota, which was postponed due to COVID. (Not sure if/when it may be rescheduled.) I’m wondering if Sarasota has the production for a while? It may not be so easy to return it back to RDB. Just guessing.
  5. Right. My understanding is that the number of primary sources (documents) from Russia is tremendous. It’s taking much longer than originally anticipated….lots to sort and refine into a well-honed tome of just 250 pages. It will surely be well worth the time.
  6. Thanks, Buddy. How was Lizi Avsajanishvili in this gala? Did she dance the Don Q pdd?
  7. The PNB performance also includes Balanchine’s Duo Concertant and Dwight Rhoden’s new ballet Catching Ferlings.
  8. What a fabulous birthday anniversary! 💯 🥳 🎂 🎁 🌸 I remember her work with the Joffrey & other companies on Presages and Chorearteum. Tough but exact. She’s a real treasure!
  9. Speaking of Barry Wordsworth…the Sarasota Ballet just released a film in which he chats about this program’s music, starting with Dante Sonata. https://vimeo.com/770921530
  10. Your upbeat reporter here! This book is yet again postponed. The newest anticipated publishing date for R.J. Wiley’s Petipa is - tahdah! - March 7, 2023. US Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Petersburg-Noverre-Marius-Petipa-Russia/dp/1839984163/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=1V9AKXSV5UV2N&keywords=Petipa+Wiley&qid=1668624764&sprefix=petipa+wiley%2Caps%2C170&sr=8-1 The price is still $250.
  11. Very interesting preview-talk about the two Ashton works in The Sarasota Ballet’s upcoming program (Dante Sonata and Rhapsody). Three panelists include dancers Danielle Brown and Daniel Pratt, plus stager Grant Coyle. Enjoy! https://vimeo.com/767608988
  12. Excellent choice. No need to hit Woke buttons as in the USA. Do your excellent job, Jose Martinez!
  13. If transferred correctly from tapes and stored in DVD liners that close, DVDs should be fine. The only two that I’ve lost out of 1,000s were incorrectly dubbed by others.
  14. The Washington Ballet is very much swept in the post-COVID-19/#BLM changes going on in today’s USA. Ms Kent did her best in this difficult time, as so many winds are sweeping. I’m sure that she and her family are moving to more traditional spheres in Houston, in general terms.
  15. Buddy, I saw that she was on Xander’s tour list. She’s still on the Berlin list of corps: https://www.staatsballett-berlin.de/en/ensemble/liza-avsajanishvili/469 FYI, are you in Russia? A friend of mine in StP noticed a doppelgänger who might be you, a couple of days ago. (If so, good luck!)
  16. Thank you, Odyssey, for the delightful photos. The second one was taken on the Queen’s 80th-birthday night that I attended and described above…on 8 June 2006, after Homage to the Queen. All of us in the audience sang Happy Birthday. What a night it was!
  17. Agreed. Perhaps some of these posts can be shifted to a separate Queen Ballet-related Memories? Until then, I’ll never forget being in the ROH audience during the Queen’s 80th b’day performance in June 2006…which itself was part of a series of performances honoring a major company anniversary (75th?)…including a reconstruction/reimagining of Ashton’s Homage to the Queen. As dopey as it seemed, I loved the final tableau when the entire cast turned its backs to the audience to kneel at the Royal crest. Happy memories!!!
  18. For me it’s spiritual, tied to religion…although I’m Russian Orthodox, not Anglican. No need to have known the Queen personally. We’re all different, as you write. Total respect, JNC! I brought it up in this thread due to the lengthy prior discussion about the possible transport strike & ability to get to the venue. Apologies! No intention to offend. ✌️
  19. To me, it’s all about respect. That’s the least that the great lady & extraordinary figure in history deserves. Maybe I’m old fashioned but I couldn’t imagine going out & about, seeking entertainment, at this time. But I respect different feelings by others. C’est tout.
  20. The day of the actual funeral - 10th day after HM’s death - may be a tough one to get around on any sort of transport.
  21. I’m so saddened with today’s news! 😢 The embroidered golden initials on the ROH’s red velvet curtain will change from “ER” to “CR”! May Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, Rest In Peace.
  22. According to the BNC’s own web page about the event - here - the Festival will span from 20 October to 13 November 2022, as on the title of this thread. At three weeks, this 27th edition will surely be the longest one yet. Perhaps they’re making up for the cancellation of the 2020 one during COVID?
