  1. Agreed...he really brought those pieces to life, complementing Martin Yates' informative talk about the Don Q score.
  2. Something I noticed in the studio, which doesn't quite come across on the recording, is how closely and intently Samantha Raine watched every move the girls made when they were dancing. In giving her corrections (which she always does in a very positive and supportive way) she comes across as being really on top of the correct choreography and positioning for every step.
  3. A ballerina on pointe, with long arms extended up, can work out at quite a height! I am sure they they will find a way around this. They did seem to manage to get it right at least once. Watching the RB Don Q recording recently I noticed Nunez looked slightly taller than Acosta when on pointe - though I think the Naghdi and Sambe difference is a bit more obvious.
  4. Yes, sorry not to see Bracewell but from all accounts Campbell is brilliant in this, so looking forward very much to his pairing with Naghdi.
  5. Yes, I knew nothing about these works before seeing them advertised on the ROH website, and booking through it (notwithstanding a few recent well discussed quirks, I find the ROH website very informative and user friendly). I am very glad I did, especially for The Two Pigeons. I am relative new balletomane; the only other complete Ashton ballets I have seen so far live being limited to (BRB) La Fille Mal Gardee and Les Patineurs (RB), plus the Voices of Spring PDD (Choe/Campbell - RB Spring Gala) - all were wonderful. Also The Dance of the Blessed Spirits (Muntagirov solo RB Spring Gala). From various Ashton recordings I have seen, my favourites so far are The Dream, plus Rhapsody, both of which I would love to see live... My approach with the RB in particular at present is likely to be "You stage it, I'll book it"....!
  6. Well after the coda sequence Kevin O'Hare said "I would buy a ticket to see that"! I'll go by his judgement !
  7. Ah, but I was counting the doubles as well Douglas! It was so exciting to see close up.
  8. Wow Yasmine really nailed those 32 fouettes! Much admiration for her and Sambe in the studio. So pleased to have been able to attend and see just a little of the hard work and skills that go into these productions. Looking forward now to seeing it all again on YouTube... ...and getting pretty excited about the opening night and the rest of the run...!
  9. From the ROH Twitter page... https://twitter.com/royaloperahouse "Tune in at 7.30pm to watch the Royal Ballet’s live rehearsal for Don Quixote" http://youtube.com/watch?v=mx77D8113cM … #ROHdonq
  10. Great to hear that Alex Campbell is on top form now he is is back - looking forward very much to his Basilio in Don Q. Sorry to have missed him and Choe, but we went to the evening performance instead and found The Two Pigeons absolutely enchanting. Ashton created such a well crafted ballet. I never imagined that seeing a couple of short pigeon flights would be so moving! It was so good to see James Hay making such an impact after his recovery from injury. He was just lovely with Akane Takada, who, as others have posted, was utterly exquisite in this role - as she has been in everything else I have seen her in thus far. There was a lot of warmth in the audience reaction at the end to Akane, James, and also Mayara Magri, who was brilliant as the gypsy girl (as she was in Asphodel Meadows with Tristan Dyer). We loved the exuberant gypsy dances and were pleased that the boys and girls in the corps deserved, and received, much praise for their fabulous skiils.
  11. Successful for me as well....the cinema got us hooked on going to live ballet performances, and now for me the cinema (though enjoyable) is very much a second choice. For example, we initially thought we would miss the Takada Don Q on 19 Feb because we could see it streamed at the cinema , but when we saw it was Campbell to be partnered with her we decided to lash out for seats at the ROH. There is always the hope that the filmed version will be out on disc in due course....
  12. I wonder if that is right Alison....would there be that many members of the public who are not previously familiar with those seats, do not check the view from the seat on the website prior to booking, yet are sufficiently familiar with the ROH to snap up the seats on the first morning of general booking?
  13. To be fair, the website now looks fine for bookings . I suspect the earlier issues were with a lot of people trying to log on as soon as possible after 9 am.
  14. Actually, on the subject of website glitches, for a few days now accessing pages on balletcoforum tends to freeze my computer screen for few seconds. It never happened before and doesn't happen on my tablet. Anyone else noticed this?
  15. More to the point, I am very pleased to note from social media that after 4 months away, James Hay is back in rehearsals with Akane Takada and Mayara Magri and is looking forward to dancing with them in The Two Pigeons on 02 February.
  16. I am straying towards pedantry here, but the generally accepted definition of "petite" does very much imply small of stature (as well as dainty or slender). I don't agree that you would naturally call relatively tall ladies, such Zenaida Yanowsky ( 5' 9'' I believe) "petite" just because they are slim.
  17. Well in the 2013 version Nikiya (Zakharova) also joined in the Act 2 curtain calls.
  18. In the 2013 version at least, the Bolshoi get through The Shades arabesques at a quicker speed than the RB did last year. For me, the RB girls, taking it slower, showed more elegance and grace particularly in their arm and head movements.
  19. The birds used are white so aren't they technically doves? "The Two Doves" would be a more romantic name for this ballet, but maybe "pigeons" comes closer to capturing the rather dopey nature of the two main characters!
