  1. The documentary was fascinating including not just the 'straight' versions from stage to screen but more off-beat versions like 'Forbidden Plant' - a wonderful adaptation of The Tempest that is also brilliant Sci-fi. Linda
  2. I tried it with a photo from Apollo and got 'woman with tennis racquet'! See https://www.dropbox.com/s/iu9j36hl0sblzqa/Apollo%20with%20muses.jpg?dl=0 And, no, it's not the one you think it is.
  3. If that large chap is for hire I think he could be on to something!
  4. I believe it was David Blair who set up a club for dancers who could manage 12. Wonder how many members this very exclusive club numbered? Linda
  5. You're not alone - I did the same! I saw my first Shakespeare play more than 50 years ago and have loved so many different versions over the years but I thought it a pretty poor show: dumbing down at its worst. But I have recorded the whole programme so will skim through it later for the highlights. BBC4's Arena 'All the World's a Screen' about the films based on the plays, is IMHO so much better and vastly more professional. Thank heavens for the ballet excerpt - strange that a text-based art form should translate so well to movement. Linda
  6. I saw a few live ballet performances at the Bristol Hippodrome but they were those Russian touring companies but I did go to see Irek Mukamedov, Darcey Bussell etc. in a Winter Dreams/Monotones I and II/Symphony in C triple bill, when the Royal Ballet used to tour the provinces, but I was very young at the time and not that well behaved as I should of been so don't really remember it but my sister (who was also there) assures me it was wonderful. What a perfect mixed bill. If only Mr O'Hare would schedule these 3 pieces together I'd probably go to every performance! Linda
  7. In view of his considerable achievements with the company, this must be a political and not an artistic decision. Like as at the Bolshoi, contracts don't seem to matter in Eastern Europe - I suspect it's a case of "Sorry but the board and I have decided we don't like the colour of your eyes". I doubt he'll be out of work for long - surely many other companies in the world would be delighted to snap him up. I certainly hope so for both his and Alina's sake. Linda Ed. for clarity.
  8. Re Giselle Live Transmission April 6th Just checked and there are only 15 seats booked at the Stratford Picturehouse for tomorrow (out of around 230). Tickets for oldies are £15 but I was wondering what the cinema is like - can anyone enlighten me before I book? Also, rather strange timing for the repeat - 12 noon next Tuesday. I wonder how many will be going then? Linda Note to moderators: I looked to see if this topic already existed so I hope I've put it in the right place.
  9. I too used to live near Croydon and frequently went to the Fairfield Halls for plays and concerts. I followed the link to their website and found some photos of the Beatles concert of April 1963, complete with a picture of 15 year old me sitting onstage right behind Ringo! Happy days.. Linda
  10. No, and at least it wasn't a wig. I loathe some of the wigs that dancers used to wear, for instance, that astonishing blonde bouffant thing worn by Dowell in the original performances of Month in the Country and Manon. Luckily most male principals these days stick to their own (though the syrup sported by one, now retired, dancer, in his last performance about 5 years ago, distracted me completely from his otherwise excellent performance). But for my all-time worst hair day, the award has to go to the 1989 production of Prince of the Pagodas. In the last act the men in the corps were given uniformly dreadful, reddish-bronzed wigs to go with their white and gold outfits. They looked like they were all wearing dead guinea pigs on their heads. if you don't believe me, take a look at the recording. Happy nightmares! Linda
  11. I wonder if it is the colouring in confectionery and some processed food that are the real villains? I have sensitive skin and am prone to dermatitis but had the worse reaction in my life after eating Chinese food coloured red for the New Year. Now I stick to plain food made from scratch so I know what's in it. But sometimes the dirty city environment can cause serious reactions particularly if there are other stressful factors present. If you have to live in a city you can try using yoga or meditation for the stress, avoid heavy make up and concealers and use a mild wash off cleanser morning and night to keep your skin scrupulously clean. Tinted moisturiser makes an good light foundation and Boots have a reasonably priced one that lasts well. Their No. 7 cleanser is also good and a bottle lasts for months. I was advised to use cotton wool wrung out in lukewarm water and keep wiping and rinsing until the cotton wool was clean. And the cheaper beauty products are often the best for sensitives because they contain less perfume and other irritants. Would you believe Lidl sell great moisturiser and night cream at less than two quid a pop? Linda
  12. I didn't realise any other choreographer had made a version of this story - not that it is surprising as there have been quite a few film and TV versions of this sensational story. Can you imagine what today's media would have made of it? Twitter etc would have a field day! Linda
  13. What threw me (re the Standard's piece) was the information that Fate in Acosta's Carmen is a 'major role' (!) In what universe????? Linda
  14. Me too - pity as I was hoping for another offer for cheaper prices. The main thing preventing me from booking earlier was that nearly all the recent new works I have seen have been either plotless or pessimistic. Strapless doesn't sound too upbeat (I believe the subject of the painting suffered social death) and I know nothing about the others. Are they also about depressing subjects? I go to the ballet for enjoyment - I get all the suffering I can take simply watching the news.
  15. "Carnival of Temperaments in the Country" - sounds like one of those naughty Edwardian weekends!
  16. They seem almost completely oblivious to terre a terre dancing and there is a lot of that in Ashton's works. Thank you for such an interesting post, Floss. One thing I do not understand fully is 'terre a terre' dancing. I think I know what it means but could you please explain it? As a non dancer I'm not sure I get it. Thanks, Linda
  17. Thank you so much for posting this - just bought the last stalls seat for the 28th and that's really brightened up my January!
  18. How lovely to hear from you again, Ian. I'm delighted to learn you are still an ardent balletomane - please do post again, particularly about productions few of us are lucky enought to see. Happy New Year, Linda
  19. In one of the 'Ballet Stroganoff' novels of Caryl Brahms and S J Simon, the enterprising ballet impressario has difficulty in persuading a certain prima ballerina to join his company so signs up her claquer instead. Problem solved! In real life however I can remember claques supporting the Russian competitors being all too present at international figure skating events in the 70s. They would stamp their feet and chant something that sounded like 'Mar Lar Zie' which someone translated for me as meaning 'Not too bad'. Seems a little lukewarm but it was certainly very loud. Perhaps someone could translate? Linda Ed. for clarity.
  20. Sorry, is that a typo? Can't even imagine what baby lungs look or feel like! Linda
  21. My pet hate is when Albrecht finishes his variation in Act 2 and gets up from lying flat on the floor with exhaustion to bow and acknowledge the audience's rapturous applause, usually with a big grin on his face! The first time I saw this was with one of the big Russian companies but certain Italian principals are equally guilty (but not at the RB, I hasten to add). Linda
  22. And a very happy New Year to you too, Sim. Thank you so much for all the hours you and your fellow moderators put in to keep this forum going as the best Ballet website around (IMHO, of course!) Linda
