  1. I wonder how the RB can manage to announce a replacement for Bracewell in R&J in June but still haven't announced his replacement in Frankenstein in a couple of weeks? (And was anyone else hoping that if any replacement Romeos were required that Campbell would get the job or just me?)
  2. I've just been having a look at how Frankenstein in selling & while I was on the ROH website also had a look at ticket prices for this summer's Nozze di Figaro. To my complete bafflement, I see that row B side stalls circle (16-27 & 86-97) is £70 for Frankenstein but is going to be £65 for Nozze. I thought that ballet was priced lower than opera (apart from the occasional modern opera) at the ROH? Have I been labouring under a misconception for years, not having actually bought any ballet tickets until this season?
  3. I now need to look up the rest of the cast as, with a couple of exceptions, the other names are unfamiliar to me.
  4. (I hope it's okay to reply to an older thread & somewhat tangentally.) When this link was first posted I looked up Nutcrackers on the website & found a programme from 1995, which was when I saw it on a school trip. I was very interested to note that among the principals at that time was Kevin O'Hare & was curious to know if I'd seen him, but 23 years later I couldn't remember which date I'd been. I then mentioned this to him when I spoke to him after seeing the RB's Don Q the other week. After I related that to my mother she dug out a file of paperwork from my primary school & among it we found the Nutcracker cast sheet. I was absolutely thrilled to find that I did indeed see Kevin O'Hare, and as the Prince! So thank you for posting the link that (eventually) inspired me to find this out.
  5. Does that necessarily mean it'll ever be made publically available though? More performances of the main stage productions are marked as Filming on the ROH website than make it to the cinema/DVD, for instance in the near future 2 performances of Frankenstein & 4 performances near the start of the run of R&J besides the 2 presumaly cinecast-yielding performances at the end of the run.
  6. That's great for students but it would be really nice if they'd consider having some discounts for those of us that aren't students but would still be interested in seeing the piece at somewhat lower prices. I'm sure the ROH used to occasionally have offers for the general public but nowadays there seems to be nothing apart from student offers.
  7. Reading back over today's posts it's not looking promising for finding something that will record onto Blu-ray. I have a) an HDD with about 80 hours of programmes (mostly Proms & suchlike) that I can't transfer to disc since the DVD recorder that is part of the same unit stopped recording & b) a Tivo with a few programmes that I'd like copy to disc. If it is so hard to get a machine that will record onto Blu-ray then what are people supposed to do when they have to get a new HDD recorder or Tivo? Lose everything they have recorded? It seems very odd that Blu-ray recorders are not more readily available.
  8. I would have thought Nunez & Muntagirov are the biggest RB stars currently. They seem to get the most high-profile first nights & cinecasts. Though as neither are in Frankenstein obviously that's no help trying to get people interested in this particular piece. Given the ROH currently don't seem able to get that many people to book to go to even one Frankenstein performance it seems a bit optomistic to try to get people to go to 3 of them! I don't think even anyone on here has yet said they are going to see it more than twice. Personally I'm holding off booking until they a) announce the replacement for Bracewell on the date I'm thinking of going & b) in the probably vain hope that they might discount the stalls down to a price I can afford, as it sounds like I'm going to miss important action from either side of the stalls circle.
  9. I was looking at prices for something that will record as well as play, which are a lot more expensive. That only works if you have an existing Hi-Fi system though, which I don't (I have no idea what an "optical audio link" may be. Our TV screen is only a few inches larger than my laptop screen (& I'd be arguing with my mother for possession of it) so I find it much easier to watch what I want on my laptop in my bedroom. I prefer watching things on my own rather than in company (sadly this is impossible for live theatregoing!). I'm sorry if I've got the wrong thread but I did a search for threads with "Blu-ray" in the title & this was the only one that came up so I don't know where else I should/could have put it.
  10. I'm hoping to see this but I can't say the mention of puppetry is encouraging. Also, no mention of casting. Does anyone know how far in advance ENB usually announce casting? I'd like to try to see some of the dancers I was impressed by in Manon.
  11. Oh dear, sounds like this is going to be expensive. There are times when I hate the progress of technology. Having examined my laptop's various ports it has an HDMI one so I'd assumed that I'd just be able to plug in a Blu-ray player to that like you'd plug it into an HDMI port on a TV. However I hadn't thought about software. Oh well, I certainly can't afford to shell out £400-500 right now so I've got plenty of time to research it further.
  12. I hope Magri isn't seriously injured. It would be a great shame if she can't make her Kitri debut at the end of the month. Mendizabal is certainly being kept busy with these extra Mercedes performances.
  13. I'm very pleased to see that a recent RB Manon will be available soon, as having really liked ENB's recent production I'm interested to see how the RB's compares. However a couple of months ago I bought the RB's Nutcracker & Ashton box set & I have found the picture quality disppointing for both, being quite "blocky" when viewed at anything near full screen. Given the majority of the material was filmed in 2016 it's not a case of having to make allowances for older material. I've only viewed them on my laptop (as my DVD recorder gave up the ghost a while ago & I haven't got round to replacing it so can't watch DVDs on my TV) & the picture quality is visibly worse than if I'm watching something on the BBC iPlayer or, for ballet comparisons, when I watched the Bolshoi Bayedere & the Stuttgart Onegin & R&J in January. My laptop screen is only 15.6 inches (resolution 1920 X 1280 pixels) so it's not as if I'm watching on some huge 40 or 50 inch TV screen but I'm wondering if even at that size screen I need to think about starting to buy Blu-rays instead of DVDs (& obviously a blu-ray player too). Does anyone with better techincal knowledge than me know if there would be a difference in picture quality between Blu-rays & DVDs on a screen that size?
  14. I wonder why they don't try reducing the stalls to, say, half price & see if they can shift some that way. I remember a few years ago there was a slow-selling Barbiere di Siviglia revival & some of the stalls were reduced to £50 (I remember it because it's the only time I've ever been able to afford a stalls seat for an opera at the ROH!). I would have thought that selling Frankenstein stalls seats for around £50 would be more profitable than selling them to students for only £10.
  15. It sounds like neither side is ideal then! Oh well, I guess I'll have to put up with missing something as I'm not prepared to pay £89 or more for stalls given I'm very dubious as to whether or not I'll like the piece at all. I only want to go because I have yet to see Bonelli live, after he withdrew from Nutcracker, & this is the only thing he seems to be cast in for the rest of the season.
  16. I was finding it very interesting & would be happy if the discussions were to continue. However I'm aware that I'm quite happy to continue discussing things long after everyone else is bored rigid!
  17. Ah, sorry, yes I thought that all the replies on the R&J thread related to R&J. Thank you. I'll make sure to try for sc left then. I've just been having a look at how the Friday rush tickets mostly (haven't) sold yet for the first two performances & it looks like I might be better waiting for those for the end of the run than booking from what's available at the moment.
  18. I've already asked this for R&J so apologies for the repeat question but can anyone give any advice as to whether auditorium left or right would be better in terms of what you'd miss sitting at the sides of the stalls circle? I'm not prepared to pay stalls prices for this one. I was surprised to see a photo posted on the ROH's Instagram a couple of days ago showing Lamb & Kish rehearsing together for Frankenstein. Is it usual for dancers to rehearse together when they're not scheduled to perform together? I would have expected Lamb to be rehearsing with Hirano & Kish with Hinkis.
  19. Except that the cast changes don't seem to be being put on social media either. I use Twitter quite a lot & couldn't recall seeing anything about cast changes there so in case I had overlooked something I've just gone back through both the Royal Ballet & Royal Opera House's Twitter feeds for the last 2 months, during which time there have been several significant cast changes, & cannot find a single tweet about them. Also, the ROH website doesn't seem to even be being updated in retrospect. For instance, Mendizabel replaced Morera in Don Q last Saturday with no advanced warning on the website. Okay, it might have been last minute illness or injury & it was a Saturday evening so perhaps the person whose job it is to update the website wasn't at work then. However Morera is still listed for that performance nearly a week later. If cast details for past performances are made available then surely they should be correct.
  20. Thanks for the replies. 1) Oh well, I guess I'll just have to hope I get a good variety of Mercutios, Tybalts, etc. 2) I currently have 2 restricted view tickets, 1 for each side (different dates, obviously), so it sounds like I might as well stick to both of them rather than try to do any exchanging. Public booking being so chaotic on 30th January, I just grabbed what I could at the time. (Now I just need a Frankenstein thread to be started so I can ask the same view question for that...)
  21. Now this thread has been started, may I ask a couple of questions? 1) Based on previous runs, is it likely that the RB will announce any more casting nearer the time, like they did with Don Q? 2) If you're sitting restricted view stalls circle, is either left or right better in terms of what you miss or are they about the same?
  22. I don't deal well with uncertainty or suspense, because I have Asperger's, so booking for something without knowing the cast is going to cause me anxiety right up until I get to the theatre & find out the cast.
  23. Thanks for the information @Jan McNulty. As I really dislike booking something without knowing the casting (this isn't just ballet but musicals, opera & plays too) it doesn't incline me to book for this.
  24. I'm afraid I didn't. At least, I knew Ball was but I assumed that Cuthbertson would have danced Kitri before. Presumably the previous Don Q runs must have coincided with the long periods she's had off injured/ill then?
  25. I was thinking of booking for the final performance in the run (not because I want to see the piece much but because I want to see Bonelli live (I was supposed to see him in Nutcracker) & this is the only piece he appears to be cast in for the rest of the season). I may now wait until it's announced who will be replacing Bracewell for that one. I'd be pleased if it were Kish. Hirano seems unlikely, given he's doing the matinee that day. It seems odd to me that the RB appear not to have any other dancer who has learnt the role for covering purposes. Or, given Bracewell was announced as injured over 2 weeks ago & Frankenstein doesn't open for another week, is it such a long & difficult role that no RB dancer could have learnt it in 3+ weeks?
