  1. Emeralds, I absolutely agree re being surprised about the breadth of the music- as I said upthread, I had no idea that BS had made music as purely lovely as Laguna Sunrise. It made for such a gorgeous pdd, and with my two favourite BRB dancers, too. I felt very fortunate to be there.
  2. I thought last night’s performance was absolutely thrilling! There was so much to take in that I am sorry not to be seeing it a second time. The dancing and music combined were, at various times, menacing, joyful and lyrical - I had no idea that Sabbath had made a piece of music as beautiful as Laguna Sunrise- it made for a gorgeous pas de deux between Tyrone Singleton and Celine Gittens. As for the ending - pure euphoria! My husband couldn’t believe his eyes when Tony Iommi appeared! I loved seeing the dancers have a ball - what a fantastic evening!
  3. On my way to Opening Night at Sadlers! Will report back- I’m very much looking forward to seeing it.
  4. Fonty, I too was an opera newbie last year (I still am, really). I’d seen a couple of Carmens and Bohemes previously but didn’t really think it was my ‘thing’. Seeing La Traviata last year changed me completely- I thought it was thrilling and since then I’ve seen several more, namely: Madama Butterfly, Cav/Pag, Tosca, Tannhauser, Turandot, Aida, Le Nozze de Figaro and Das Rheingold (the latter was the live cine cast). I have genuinely loved every single one. I’d recommend Cav/Pag, which is at the ROH some time before Christmas. Do let us know if/when you go!
  5. I attended last night’s performance. I sat in the middle of row C in the second tier, which I thought was an excellent seat for the price. I really enjoyed my evening- two out of the three pieces I thought beautiful. Themes and Variations was pure, joyful sunshine from the moment the curtain rose on the beautifully placed group of dancers and I loved the way the momentum built and built to that wonderful finale - my face hurt afterwards from my permanently beaming face! I did not enjoy Les Noces, I’m afraid. I really tried to get into it and I admired the attack and commitment of the dancers but I found the subject matter and the music really grim and after about fifteen minutes I had just had enough. That being said, there was clearly a sizeable section of the audience that enjoyed it, it was just not my bag. Four Last Songs was a revelation to me - I had thought I might be a bit on the fence about it, but I found it absolutely exquisite and so emotive. I liked the dreamlike, abstract nature of it and the feeling of yearning that came from the dancing and music combined. Madeleine Pierard’s singing was intoxicating and I was deeply moved by the way she connected with the dancers. I’m so glad to have seen it. Despite not enjoying Les Noces, I thought this was an excellent triple bill!
  6. I’m absolutely delighted that casting has been announced in a timely manner. I have booked seats for Oliveira/Frola in Giselle and I’m beyond excited! I have also booked for Nutcracker (my daughters would not forgive me if we missed it), and am really looking forward to seeing Precious Adams as Clara.

    ROH Aida

Thanks Jenny, you have definitely removed any lingering doubts I may have had about seeing this production! Glad you enjoyed the singing, at least.
  8. I’m so pleased to see positive reactions to Thomas Whitehead’s performance as one of the sisters. I didn’t see him in this role unfortunately but I love his Friar Lawrence…
  9. Dawnstar, I’m in absolute awe of your thoughtfulness and initiative. How lovely it must have been to see Laura holding your flowers!!
  10. Geoff, as an opera newbie, I have really fallen for the music of Aida. I can imagine that a trip to Vienna was well worth it…
  11. Regarding unattractive productions, I was considering seeing Aida at the ROH, but it seems like such a ‘grey’ production that I decided to save my money. I went to the Ukrainian opera company/Ellen Kent production of Aida at the Churchill in Bromley instead. I thought it was rather good for £30 and an excellent seat.
  12. I’ll gladly see DQ and Manon again. The MacMillan and Ashton mixed bills look very exciting! Opera-wise, lots I’m interested in - need to read over it again. Yes, this announcement was definitely worth the wait.
  13. Belinda Hatley was a gorgeous Cinderella! I saw her in a number of roles but that’s the memory I treasure
  14. I used to book almost exclusively back in the day for Mukhamedov/Durante. They were wonderful together. I’m in agreement with Dawnstar that I don’t see enough of Clarke because Osipova is not my automatic dancer of choice, but if Manon is on next season and Osipova is dancing,I’m very tempted to book…
  15. I’d like to see Muntagirov/Naghdi as a possible pairing. That being said, Yasmine is absolutely perfect with Matthew Ball. Clarke/ Nunez is a partnership that would interest me.
  16. BridieM, your review said what I couldn’t and sums up why this ballet makes me feel so emotional- the choreography and music touch me on a deep level. Thank you for your lovely words.
  17. A belated few thoughts about last Saturday evening’s performance…I was there with my mum, who is 80 later this year. She has been an avid watcher of ballet for her entire adult life, and has spoken of her admiration for Francesca Hayward, having seen her on screen a few times. So to be able to take her to see Francesca perform was very special. It really was a magical evening and a magical production. I liked the design and set very much – my favourite part was the beautiful staircase (to heaven?) in Act 3. I also liked most of the costumes (my mum didn’t like them as much). I like what Sim said upthread about magic being in the air and the Prince anticipating something happening (yes, it is very like ‘Something Good’ from West Side Story! – that line ‘the air is humming’ makes me think of the beautiful music that heralds the imminent arrival of Cinderella!) Francesca Hayward was magnetic, truly spellbinding; Alexander Campbell was perfect as her prince. I hadn’t seen Annette Buvoli in a big role before and thought she was utterly delightful as the Fairy Godmother. Finally, the score, which is one of my favourites, sounded wonderful under Koen Kessels. I will remember this evening for a long time.
  18. Onegin would head my wish list. It was the last ballet I saw before the first lockdown. Yasmine Naghdi was exquisite and I came away hoping I’d be able to see Onegin again very soon.
  19. I’m sorry to hear this. I absolutely love his music for Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence and the collaboration with David Sylvian from the band Japan
  20. Back to the score… I absolutely love it and find it impossible not to cry during the overture. I can’t wait to see Cinderella on the 15th April - I’m taking my mum to see Francesca Hayward as a late Christmas present.
  21. I couldn’t access it repeatedly yesterday afternoon from my iPad either - it’s fine now, though.
