  1. My DD also adored the SS. Location is stunning. Yes, a tad isolated but so very safe with wild deer trotting up the driveway. I know that many students use online supermarket shopping for their groceries etc. Without transport the hike back up the hill with shopping is challenging! There are shops in the village but like most village shops there is a premium to pay for the convenience. Oban is a short bus ride away. Accommodation:- Cabins (sleeps 3 or 4) on the drive as well as some students stay in the main house itself for the younger pupils. The older ones rent private accommodation within the village and walk to the school. We only have SS experience but as it has been mentioned there are many on this forum with children at the school who should be able to fill in the blanks with up to date info.
  2. Yikes, thanks for the warning. When I mentioned budget friendly I was trying to aim for a hotel that was clean and tidy, Modern with breakfast incl, not in a box thingy, like the Travel lodge which was a shame, refuse to pay an extra £15 for breakfast pp as quoted by some hotels, and wifi for the entire stay to keep teenager happy at no extra expense. No frills, no gym, no bar or evening restaurant needed. Some of the booking sites are so frustrating. You enter all your details in the search incl length of stay they then quote a price. Great you think, nailed it and then discover that the price quoted was per night! Why bother even asking how many nights for your visit. oh and you enter location and that doesn't seem to mean a thing. Gripe over. Thanks for all your suggestions. Will put the kettle on and have a browse..
  3. I was thinking that as it was a one day only workshop we didn't have to stay on the doorstep of ENBS on this occasion. When my DD attended the SS for 2 weeks we stayed very close for convenience. Trying to spread our wings a bit this time.
  4. Thank you, do you know of a Premier Inn near to Victoria? I do like branded hotels, at least a standard is guaranteed. I have unfortunately made mistakes in the past by choosing an independent Hotel in London. The words "never again" was mentioned as we checked out!!
  5. Hi, Currently looking for a budget friendly hotel for next weekend. DD attending ENBS Audition workshop on the Monday. We arrive at Gatwick late on Saturday, so any suggestions around Victoria Train Station area would be appreciated. Tried researching for hotels on Booking.com but with so many on the site it is challenging to know what's best. Appreciate any personal recommendations. Thank you
  6. Try and obtain a student ID card. My eldest used hers when she was in yr11 for dining out when some eateries offer student discount. As well as the obligatory retail therapy required on these occasions. Not too sure if all schools provide them, we were lucky with hers as it carried a photo as well. Saved us a few ££.
  7. We are struggling with the request for references mainly because of the close knit school and word getting out about her auditioning. She just doesn't want the added pressure from others asking her about the upcoming events then how she has done and then how to answer if the outcome wasn't as hoped. Keeping quiet was her choice. Having to ask for references put an end to that private element. Just wondering how others have overcome this issue.
  8. Thank you, unfortunately we don't in England. Travel links are somewhat challenging as well as pricey. Good idea though
  9. I can't offer any advice either but I had looked at the school and was curious to know of how the English speaking students integrated with language and style of teaching etc. The results speak for themselves. Slightly put off by the 6 hours of travelling to get there!!
  10. I agree with you. The flesh all in ones appear a great idea but they tend to be cut quite high across the front and are visible around the neckline for many costumes. They also don't have as much growth as per separate items. Especially as these staple items are only used for shows and festivals. Nude knickers etc can be worn for regular lessons which is also a financial bonus.
  11. I'm curious of where your DD would be performing. Our local theatre abides by UK regulations that no costume changes in the wings for those under 16. Which is strange because as soon as they hit 16 and a day they can strip down to a thong right next to their male cast members. Doesn't make much sense to me. but then if everyone is busy no one is looking either.
  12. Thank you, trying to work out if we could get away with the Red Eye flight or have to book in for an overnight stay. ££££ Eek Ps I haven't heard back yet, just forward planning travel arrangements.
  13. Hi all, Hoping someone can help. Does anyone know the times for the workshop on the 23rd October? Can't find any details. Trying to work out day trip or overnight stay for an early start. Thank you
  14. We use our local dance shop, as online shopping is not really recommended for Pointe Shoes, but very tempting when prices are on average £75 per pair!
  15. Oh bless her, out of interest do you darn the whole box area or just the perimeter. Just creating the frame can help. DD learnt that at ENBS this summer after I had painstakingly darned the whole box!! Best wishes to your DD on her Grade journey. DD loved Grade 6 I think mainly as she was the only pupil at the time so ended up having private lessons purely by default rather than on purpose. The rest of the girls weren't ready. Now RAD Grade 7, AdvF1 and ISTD Intermediate. I honestly don't know how the girls remember which grade is which. As long as I remember what time to pick her up I'm happy.....
  16. Yup, I would have gone for age as of Sept 2018, as that's the entry date they are applying for. Do they really rely on references at such a early stage of the procedure? Not keen that Head Teacher is made aware of plans, post 16 so early on.
  17. Hi, Just wondering. Has your DD tried changing her pointe shoes? And does she darn the box or use does she use suede? Simple adjustments can assist a dancer with their pointe work. Strengthening the feet with simple exercises using a wide stretch band can also help. My DD is 15 Grade 7 (just passed G 6) and also RAD AdvF1.
  18. I can sympathize with you over costs. DD has been invited to ENBS Audition workshop. Travel costs alone was going to be over £300!! And that was just for a workshop, with no 'prize' at the end of it!
  19. There is an error on page 9 of the application form
  20. Just seen this on FB. Thought I would post in under a couple of different headings as they are looking for boys. Makes a change 😉. AUDITION NOTICE: We're looking for talented boys to join us on stage in our brand new production of #BRBNutcracker at the Royal Albert Hall this Christmas with auditions being held in London this weekend. Applicants must be in school years 5, 6 or 7 (from September 2017). The maximum height for boys taking part is 142cm and ideally, we're looking for boys who enjoy dancing and love to perform. Previous ballet experience is an advantage, but not necessary. Interested? Please email Katie in our education team by 5pm on Friday 6th October ( KatieMann@brb.org.uk) for further details.
  21. This was posted on FB just 45mins ago. (Fingers crossed my IT skillls work) Interesting that thry only ask for boys in their most recent post. 22. Thank you Alison for that reassurance. Just also discovered that due to limited travel arrangements, it would take 6 hours and two flights just to get to Stuttgart!! And my DD was concerned about finding her way back form BW to Glasgow airport!!! Oh, Teenagers don't we just love them. All grown up one minute then a little girl the next.
  23. I am very interested to know of overseas vocational schools, we are considering all options. My DD is open to any suggestions/recommendations 'as long as they speak English' was her reply! She doesn't think her GCSE German would be enough for John Cranko Academy.
  24. It's a shame I'm so useless when it comes to anything IT, I was just trawling through some old show programmes and came across a photograph of Harris when he appeared as Billy Elliott. How ironic is that?!
