  1. Does anyone have an uplifting story about being assessed out of a vocational school to share? Would love to hear of anyone has been through this and somehow managed to find success in their dance life. Thanks in advance
  2. I was wondering if anyone has any insight to offer re JA boys? What are the acceptance ratios for boys?

Bad feet are sometimes referred to as biscuits 😂

As for physio lessons for young children, I’m not convinced it would help with JA auditions specifically… you can’t fundamentally change the way someone is put together and at that age they know what they want to see at auditions. I don’t think you can influence your chances beyond a certain point. I think the world is always full of people who are happy to take our money, there is so much out there and I’d chose carefully how to spend both time and money particularly when it comes to ages 10 and below

To the poster who was asking how to assess turnout: from a lay perspective if your child is comfortable in a frog stretch and if their knees lay flat on the floor (without pushing the knees down, just with the help of gravity) in a butterfly stretch then I’d say they have decent turnout. Whether it’s perfectly even is not crucial until they are older and audition for vocational school. Does this make sense? Everyone else, would you agree?
  6. The official Prix de Lausanne has posted three times apologising for some comments that were made on their account. Does anyone know what this is regarding?
  7. How do you prepare for a competition when you are at vocational school? Would the school suggest it, and prepare you? Or would you seek their permission and then prepare independently outside of school? Just curious
  8. And if you are serious about vocational school, you might want to look into doing more ballet. Your competition will already be at vocational school in some cases, and they are doing 2-3 hours of dance per day. If you can’t find classes locally, there are lots of good online classes around.
  9. I think you should apply to a summer intensive! This is one way to gauge your potential: if you get accepted I’d take that as a positive, and if you end up going you will meet lots of other dancers your age, who will all be really talented as these intensives can be very competitive to get in to. This will help you get an idea of where you stand in comparison to dancers who are at vocational school already, as this will be the level of your competition for entry into Elmhurst. The Royal Ballet School summer intensive is open for applications now, have a look at their website. The Royal Ballet School also has an online easter intensive with no audition. Do this one! You’ll get an idea of the level of training at these schools, and you can see other dancers your age on screen with you.
  10. YDA nutcracker is going ahead later this month, we know students at the school. I don’t know where to get tickets though
  11. Thanks everyone. I always felt that as long as DD is doing the correct thing technically in her photos, she would have a fair chance, even if we didn't do it in a studio with professional lighting and a photographer. Phone cameras are so great nowadays, and its so easy to crop, brighten etc, so I just can't justify spending £££ for associate or intensive application photos. Like Aklf pointed out, the panel will be experts at spotting what they are looking for.
  12. It would be so interesting to hear everyone's thoughts on audition photos. We are applying to some summer intensives and really don't want to pay £££ for professional photos so will do them in the studio with dd's teacher. This is what we have always done for all auditions, sometimes she has been successful and sometimes not. If she ends up applying to vocational upper school we would probably get the photos done professionally but I don't think we will do it before that stage. Am I missing something? If there is a live audition, I always assumed photos wouldn't really matter, as long as the dancer gets it right, and the quality is ok. Thoughts on this? Another situation would be those summer intensives where they only go by photos. We have only applied to intensives which have had photos + live/video audition so we have never given it much thought. What would you advise?
  13. Just going through this with my son who has spent the last weeks sitting various academic entrance exams, it is going to absolutely crush him if it's a no from all schools, but what can you do. As for ballet, we have certainly had our fair share of no's and near misses. It is so hard. But once that yes finally comes, it's all the more enjoyable . No means not yet, as they say xx
  14. Claudia Dean are also very nice, I forget what the style is called but there is one with slightly wider straps than degas which is also very flattering
  15. I guess it also depends on body type/shape? If long upper body, they will look more low cut than on someone with a shorter upper body. On some with this body type the V comes very far down which doesn’t look right on a younger dancer in my opinion. Best to find a style which your dd feels comfortable in. If she feels a bit awkward and not her best self she might fiddle and tug at the leotard which won’t help bring out her best qualities on the day…

Is your daughter on Instagram? Claire Calvert (first soloist with the Royal Ballet) has an entire account dedicated to makeup, your daughter will definitely find this helpful. It's @make_up_by_claire123
  18. MrsDanceMum I'm afraid I can't help with sizing as my DD is still in the junior sizes - these run very very small and pretty much everyone I know will size up, so perhaps this is also true for the adult sizes. 9502 seems to run even smaller than 9501. I would not worry about sweat stains on the meryl fabric! They are fully lined on the front, and the material is really nice, it's nothing like an old school cotton leotard
  19. Hi Kirsty! Apologies, I only just saw your message. very happy to do £30, please let me know if you are still interested. Thank you
  20. I think that’s probably going to be the case wherever you go, if your daughter is younger than 9… as far as I am aware, most performance opportunities start from 9 and up. I’m not familiar with dance festivals or competitions myself, maybe that might be worth looking into? We don’t have any schools near us that do them but judging from Instagram there are some young children taking part. Back to the topic of LCB, good luck to everyone in the finals next week
  21. I probably didn't explain myself very well - I agree with you in the sense that in my opinion, everyone who made it was very accomplished and talented. However there were some super accomplished dancers who were not successful, and if I had to guess why, the difference between those who made it and those who didn't would be that elusive x factor that some people just have. They were more outgoing, smiley, and above all confident than the other dancers of a similar calibre who made it. My impression is that LCB really appreciate (really talented/accomplished) dancers who can act, and who feel comfortable on stage. This could be the deciding factor. Again my sample size is not big enough to draw any solid conclusions from, these are just my observations
  22. I forgot to add that you should try and find a school that offers performance opportunities. If you are London based there should be quite a few to choose from, we know some schools that do pretty professional summer/winter shows in proper theatres. That's a really great way to get to perform on stage!
