  1. Yep, I have b/g twins and the boy has always done well. Like you say he's not necessarily better, but he's a boy! My girl has now moved into diversifying from ballet and doing more contemporary type stuff which the boy has no interest in. Been interesting watching them find their niche, I wouldn't say it's ever caused arguments but in the beginning when DS was doing auditions for RBS etc, DD was a bit cheesed off. Now they just fall out about which choreographer is the best! 😂😂 xx
  2. We had one last year who came up to me as DS was in the changing room and said, "please do come back again, he has a great dance physique and we'd like to see how he grows..." Didn't get in like, but he will try again this academic year...🤣🤣 Lol...xx
  3. We're in a similar situation, DS has been dancing for 2 years, he was moved up from grade 1 to 2 because of his age, but never did his grade 1 exam. I know exams aren't everything but they are important rites of passage to the kids I think. Who wouldn't want a shiny medal at 8?? Hopefully he will be able to take his grade 2 this year, then move up. Heard good things about KS dance if you can get there...xx
  4. I was encouraged to go en pointe way too young some 30 years ago, and as a result damaged the bones in my feet. Ultimately it's down to body maturity but I think 10 is a bit young. Have fun with dance, pointe can come later...xx
  5. How did you get on with the whole hanging about thing? If DS happens to be successful, I'd be taking him as it's 45 mins from home then waiting around for however many hours, that's a lot of book reading!!! 😆 Guess we'll go for the audition first, see how it goes...xx
  6. Just because I can.... "Oh no he's not..." "Oh yes he is!!" 😂😂😂
  7. Hiya, Just wondered if any of your DC are auditioning for panto season?? I wasn't that keen, it taking up the whole of Christmas but DS is fancying a go. Any experience greatly appreciated. Rate he's going, he'll be a professional auditioner!! 😂😂😂 😂😂😂 xx
  8. Awww, it's great to hear some positive stories...Well done to you guys...xx
  9. He's 10. Luckily quite determined! See how he gets on tomorrow...👍👍
  10. No, ballet today, other styles the rest of the week. Going to sleep on it and may e mail the teacher once he finishes tomorrow just to let her know DS's perspective. I get that boys and girls learn differently and have different movements to perfect but surely a good teacher accommodates both?? xx
  11. We've been to an intensive day at our own ballet school today but DS came back a bit disappointed. He said he was one of two boys there and in his words the teachers "loved" the other boy. When I asked him what he did he said, "just the easy stuff" He said it was totally geared up for the girls and the boys were left out of almost everything. Stating the only boy thing he did was learn a tour l'en air. Am I expecting too much for my 40 hard earnt quids?? I'd have liked to see a little bit of something at the end, even if it were just the getting certificates. Hes back again tomorrow but just wondered if this is usual for workshops? We did a BRB one last year and it was only an hour and were invited in to see a little bit. Disgruntled of Wales! xx
  12. We've got an adidas hold all and a pineapple one. Only problem being everyone seems to have the pineapple one, so it gets lost in a big pile of bags! 🙈 Still end up without enough space tho, 4 different shoes, warm ups, etc etc...
  13. Thanks guys, he's just wanting more and more ballet at the minute, but this seems like a good way of him getting some other perspectives and some special boy time. (He's the only boy in his RAD class) without breaking the bank! Said to me the other day, if there are any more associate auditions this year, "I'll do them, I'll do then all!!" Booked him into a few workshops on 21st but he's really missing it at the minute...?? Nice to see him enthusiastic...xxx
  14. Hi guys, Met up with an old friend this week who I danced with back in the 90's. Long story short, she's offered to do some free 1-1's with DS. Only prob is we were trained in ceccheti ballet many moons ago and DS is taking classes for RAD exams. Would it have a negative impact on his style? At the minute, I'm thinking, he's just 10 and any extra ballet has to be good, right?? The only other consideration is if it will be ok with his teacher. Tempted with the cost of these things to say yes, but don't want to get anyone's back up! ? What would you do???
  15. Hi Yorkshire Pudding, I'm over t'pennines! My DS has been dancing for nearly 2 years and is 10 next week. He asked could he start dancing at 3 when Russell Grant was on Strictly Come Dancing! We took him to see Russell in Grease the musical when it toured and I cheekily tweeted him while we were en route! Just before curtain up I got a message back saying, "bring him to the stage door after the show" He was so lovely with DS, showed him round the dressing rooms, let him try on all the costumes and that was it! DS then spoke of nothing else for 2 years till he took his first class! ?? Now he takes ballet, tap, jazz, acro and contemporary. DS is also the only boy in his G2 class, so I try to get him in as many workshops as I can. He took a couple of auditions this year for experience really, didn't get any but he so loved his boy classes. I'm going to look into classes at the Northern in Manchester and Centrepointe in Didsbury. We currently dance in Chester. Think there is a real need for a boys class in the north, not driven by audition but by enthusiasm. Nice to have you here...??? xx
  16. Hi Terry, I'm an ex dancer who went on to train in psychology and eventually psychiatric nursing. I now have a dancing son who is 10, so see it from a parent perspective too. Any help you need, give us a shout...xx
  17. It is possible to pursue dance from the uni level rather than the vocational route, just make sure you have a good old nosy round places! Some vocational schools run performance degrees alongside their vocational courses. From memory, look into LIPA in Liverpool who produce a very high standard of commercial dancer. I'd be super proud if one of mine went down this route as I have an appreciation of how difficult it is to get in! Best of luck...xx
  18. Hi Katie, I went down the university route years ago. I'd encourage her to find somewhere she can study dance A level first. It's quite academic and very different to how people imagine it's going to be. There are two written exams at the end, one on anatomy and one where you write reams on a particular piece of choreography. There is also a dance notation element which is examined. Think it was Laban notation from memory. Entry to university is dependant on being able to fulfill the academia side and the actual performance side. I had auditions for every course I applied to and they are all different. I remember Northampton being very focused on fitness and Pilates type approaches where Breton Hall were all about the shows! I audition at these as well as Lancaster, Leicester, and LIPA. Eventually I went to DMU in Leicester but left after two months as I was homesick! (I got in nearer to home to study psychology 2 weeks later!) Go to some open days, that way your daughter can get a feel for the place. Some are literally in the middle of nowhere, and some are in cities so do lots of research! Any questions, ask away... xx
  19. Warning! Do not wash canvas ballet shoes, ever!! ? Earlier in the year I decided to machine wash DS' white canvas shoes 2 days before his RBS audition, all pleased with myself I presented him with his persil whites and he couldn't get them on his feet!!! Cue me and his teacher phoning round ballet shops far and wide to acquire a new pair! Just as buses arrive two at once, we both found a pair, bought them and drove miles to collect! This all happened on the same day that my uni dissertation was due in! Moral of the story, don't wash canvas! ???????
  20. Thanks guys, guess it's just a wait it out thing, and pray he doesn't break anything till then! ?? xx
  21. Hiya guys, How is everyone doing? Just a check in and a few question for parents of older dancers. My 10 year old DS is struggling with these long limbs that have appeared out of nowhere! He's developed a clumsiness that would put Bambi to shame and it's like his brain hasn't caught up with how fast he's growing!!! Bit of a problem for a dancer! ? So what age did your boys and girls catch up with their limbs?? Were there any particular spatial awareness exercises you came across? How can I help him through the Bambi/Goofy stage with his street cred! ??
  22. Thank you guys! ? Haven't had chance to speak to his teacher yet but will endeavour to this weekend. I understand that if a class has a low take up it will get cancelled but one of the cancelled ones had 15 kids in it, so not sure what's going on there! I've found one other class within our own school that fits in with everything else, just need a different set of clothes and shoes for it! ?? it's all ££££ eh?? xxx
  23. Sounds good, not sure we could manage all week but a day or two might be doable....mmmmmmm...xx
  24. Hiya, Curious question for you. How did you choose your dance school?? I just kind of e mailed some local ones and went with the first to reply! ? At the point now where DS needs more classes than current one provides. Current ones focus seems to be shifting to under 5's and he's 10. They've cancelled two of his classes this year due to low numbers and there seems to be less and less tweens. So, what's the etiquette? Can you join 2 schools or is that not cricket? At the minute he's dead set on a career in dance somewhere...xxx
  25. We're going tonight, looking forward to it, DS is just preparing his snacks for watching! ? xx
