  1. I was talking to bangorballetboy about this the other week at ROH and he explained that Peter Wright production is meant to make it very clear that she dies from wounding herself with the sword - otherwise she would be buried on consecrated ground. However, I personally don't feel that comes across so obviously - which is why I had asked the question in the first place. I can hardly contain my excitement about seeing my dream cast tonight... Edited to add: cross-posted with you, BBB!
  2. I agree with the tip of using ordinary scheduled buses for sightseeing. As well as the 11, 15 and RV1 (recommended above) the 9 is good, and you can pick it up from Kensington HIgh Street which isn't far from Earl's Court. It goes from Hammersmith to Covent Garden via Kensington, the Royal Albert Hall, Hyde Park Corner, Piccadilly, Trafalgar Square... (I've been in London nearly 17 years and I never tire of the sightseeing, really - I use the 11 a lot as it goes straight past my office in Pimlico and takes me to the Royal Opera House...)
  3. I wish. It's the only Puccini opera I haven't seen; it was done a few years ago in London by Chelsea Opera Group in a concert performance, and then two years ago in Paris, also in concert, but I wasn't able to go to either.
  4. The Royal Opera House does indeed accept Theatre Tokens, but the difficulty there would be not being able to use them for online booking, which I believe is possible with ROH-issued vouchers. That could be very limiting.
  5. I think it's a bit strange that it's taken them until now to issue a "content warning", if they were going to do so at all. (I also note that the page on their website for Boris Godunov (which opens tonight) contains a statement that it's not suitable for under 12s. I wonder if that was already there when booking opened... not being under 12 myself I wouldn't have taken any notice!)
  6. I came across this sad news on Twitter last night while waiting for a concert to begin. It was the weirdest coincidence - not five minutes earlier I'd been trying to bring his name to mind (in the sense of "what was the name of that tenor who I saw in Turandot and Madama Butterfly at Scottish Opera?") having not given him a second thought in months. I can't claim to have been a fan, but sad for anyone to die suddenly and so young.
  7. Hmmmm. Can't see it yet... (Edited to add - oh yes, sorry - I was looking in the wrong place. EXCELLENT. Thought she'd retired the role!) I also found myself thinking earlier on that I do hope Laura Morera is getting on OK with recovering from her injury and will be able to dance her scheduled performances of the title role...
  8. I didn't want to join in the standing ovation because I was in the front row of the Stalls Circle in a position which would have blocked a lot of people's views behind me, and I hate it when I'm sitting further back and people in front of me stand and block my view... Also because - and I know this sounds weird - I never feel like applauding her at all when she gives a performance like that. I always just want to give her a big hug
  9. There's a reason I've booked for every single performance in this run... and last night's was definitely the best one yet. I was so pleased about that standing ovation.
  10. Happy about that if true (I'm not there yet) though Thiago tweeted a rehearsal pic of him and Akane a few hours ago.
  11. I booked SCS for a handful of Bolshoi performances and can vouch for the fact that it was £15. As for the Insights, I am a Supporting Friend and there was nothing left even when I booked (and that In Conversation was the very first thing I looked for at the moment booking opened).
  12. I wonder who will now be dancing at the dress rehearsal...
  13. I'm selfishly gutted that she chose to retire now rather than after Giselle - she wasn't in the last run at all (recovering from hip surgery, I think?) and my interest in ballet doesn't go back far enough for the run before that! So I never did see her Berthe... My favourite Lady Capulet by a mile.
  14. There are a few rear-Amphitheatre tickets for that rehearsal online now, if anybody's looking. Managed to grab myself a nice one further forward.
  15. Personally I enjoy the 12:30 matinees... I don't come from far away, so I don't have that aspect to consider, but after a late breakfast/brunch, it's rather nice getting out of the theatre just as all other matinee audiences else have left the nice restaurants empty
  16. I took one term of absolute beginners' classes ever (in my early 30s) and had the same issue. At the time I had no interest in ballet as an audience member, and certainly hadn't had the benefit of anything like this forum with its breadth of in-depth technical knowledge from professional dancers and teachers. The teacher told me the reason I couldn't get my heels anywhere near each other in first was that I had swayback legs, and from that day until I first came across the term on this forum, I assumed that must be an un-remediable fault!
  17. But if you're going to an evening performance, watch out for the long-term overnight engineering works in the Southampton area as you might find yourself on a rail replacement bus service. (Sorry for off-topic remark but I thought it was important!)
  18. Quite aside from the safety aspect, however, how many dancers are going to fancy a long cycle commute after a long day of class, rehearsal and performance in a physically-demanding job? I'm sometimes too tired to face my usual one-hour walking commute after a busy day, and all I do is sit at a desk... (That said, Eric Underwood has mentioned on Twitter that he commutes by bike, though I'm not sure if he meant pedal or motorbike...)
  19. Last night's final performance of the run was an absolute joy, especially the grand pas de deux - I don't remember seeing any Sugar Plum Fairy and Prince look like they were having THAT much genuine fun separately or together. And just genuinely beautiful dancing from both Nunez and Muntagirov, as you might expect. I'm so excited to see them together in Giselle in a couple of months. Though I imagine they won't look quite so cheerful together in that... I wasn't so keen on Zucchetti as the Nephew, though - thought he danced well, but was disappointing dramatically (underplayed the mime in Act 2, for example). Preferred Hayward opposite Campbell earlier in the run. I may have to make it a personal tradition to see Gary Avis's first and last performances in any run of Nutcracker, at least until such time as Gary retires or they replace the production... I've decided that Christmas begins when he chucks his first handful of glitter, and ends when he chucks his last...
  20. Yes, they're quite long-term engineering works - every late-night for a couple of months, I think? I remember taking note of an information announcement to that effect while waiting for a train at Hook station after visiting my sister a couple of weeks ago, and thanking goodness I didn't have tickets for anything at the Mayflower at the moment...
  21. The RBS has said on Twitter this morning that they've had a technical problem which means some JA applications may not have been received. Thought all you parents might like to know so you can check!
  22. Stalls and Amphitheatre tickets at up to 58% off (prices starting at £20) for the Rhapsody/Two Pigeons mixed bill using code "travelzoorhapsody". http://www.travelzoo.com/uk/entertainment/-20-up-The-Royal-Ballet-Mixed-Programme-up-to-58-Off-2184521/ As ever, you may find the code only works if you're logged out of your ROH member's account at the time. Edited to add: it gave me a website error when I tried to log in after picking up a discounted ticket. However I phoned them and they were able to complete my transaction.
  23. This is the only Royal Ballet main stage production in Booking Period 4. Not sure whether the Bolshoi tour booking date will be the same day.
