  1. Simple is best at this age - look at their eye colour and find a colour that brings out their little features - so not pastel pink on a very pale child etc. It helps them stand out and removing the jA leotard gives them their own sense of identity. Its easier for the panel to remember 'the girl in the blue leotard" as opposed to "which of the 5 JA's are we taking about??"! Good luck with auditions xx
  2. Thanks 2dancersmum, the CDET conference is VERY Musical Theatre based hence I am running a purely Vocational Ballet one - looking at only the top schools and how to get in!
  3. Hi Ladies, I can be of assistance with many of these questions which you are asking! I have either taught in, had students attend, or know the teachers in each school. Please see the audition workshop thread and if you can attend I very am happy for parents to pop in at the end and ask these in person - a useful Q&A I think! ?
  4. Hi tomuchtalent please see the Audition Preparation workshops thread as its a day that would answer all these questions for you and we could also advise on the potential presented and type of schools to look at, photos etc!. Lots of advice on hand re each school for you x
  5. Hi Ballet world, Dima Grudev will be giving the company audition class (ENB Co Principal) with myself and others on the panel including Elizabeth Rae - a Master Repetiteur and teacher across the globe with current and vast knowledge of who gets the job and why!!! Also the "types " that many companies go for. I will be contacting Christopher Hampson for his ideal dancer check list and others! This is open to 1st, 2nd and 3rd years, graduates and those seeking work. Lower school - Myself and Mary Goodhew will not only be informing you/students of the types of work included at White lodge, Elmhurst and Tring auditions but each child will also have a written report with technical, artistic and crucial audition aspects that we noted included. Its really important they get some practise before that all important day as nerves can undermine the very best training and its such a shame if they don't get that second chance. I have some great tips to share. Upper school will address the usual suspects - RBS, ENB, Elmhurst, Central, Rambert, Tring plus some overseas options. The students need experience away form their familiar studio, teachers and friends to understand how even the most confident student can "Lose their legs"!! We will recreate the atmosphere for the mock audition so they must self correct and interpret both the exercises and the expectations of the panel correctly. etc!!!! I hope this info helps as I am aware some schools also offer their own - but the set up of these workshops is feedback orientated and covers all schools.
  6. Hi Balletbean, I would be open to flying over! please email me emmanorthmore@yahoo.com with any thought son when you would need me x
  7. I can now announce that Dima Gruzdev, principal of English National Ballet Company and guest teacher at ENB school will be giving the Mock Audtion on the Company day and Mary Goodhew (ex Artistic Director Elmhurst, Principal at White lodge, Teacher at the RBS upper school and current advisor at the Royal Ballet School) will be giving advice and the mock for both the lower and upper school days. Upper school day is nearly full so please email asap if interested. emmanorthmore@yahoo.com It doesn't necessarily need to be their year for auditions as the lessons learnt on these days are invaluable skills for the success of dancers today
  8. Hi pictureinthefirelight, I have a few yr 10 coming as it takes more than one practise to understand and hone these techniques so if you are interested please do email me. The auditions in Yr 11 start early so preparation is key! Plus these are skills for all auditions, be it casting within the school and assessment work.
  9. For all you worrying mums out there. It is perfectly acceptable to ask for a proper feedback session. Particularly from a vocational school or associate programme. You can ask if enough of these vital 'boxes' are being ticked. We as teachers can't guarantee work even for the most talented students as they are at the whim of a directors view of what is good or not. And everyone has a different opinion! However we need to be careful of gauging a childs' talent because they have been accepted on to certain programmes or schools. Unfortunately a small handful are possibly given places so the school can run, as a business. Parents pay thousands when in reality the physicality of that child is just not cut out for a career in ballet. It's every parents right to ask for a formal chat with the principal for the honest facts about their child's ability (this is particular to ballet ). If knees won't straighten or the turn out is not there then no amount of hard work will overcome this. There is a degree of turn out that can be "arranged" to fit once in upper school but any less than this and it will just not happen. Its only fair that parents and children are told this before they become emotionally drained and damaged by the constant 'No', not enough, not right, not good enough. Over the yrs they are left with a lack of self confidence that is ingrained and a loss of academic years when their focus could have been redirected before any damage was done. For example: a lack of turn out, if the degree is not too extreme, can be overcome with great feet and an intelligent mind to hide it. Short hamstrings don't matter so much if the turn out is present and with good feet. Or wonderful musicality and ballon hide the lack of instep etc etc. SOME of these boxes must always be ticked. IF NONE of these are happening at age 13/14 then its only fair to have a rethink as the jobs are just not out there even for some very blessed dancers. Even then you are reliant on luck, timing and if they like a dark or light haired dancer that day!! Ballet is a gift but can provide much angst. There is nothing guaranteed or straight forward on this path and if they love it then its like the very air they breathe and they will always thank you for the opportunity. Dreams must be followed if there is a chance! If that dream has the potential to crush and destroy a person it can become their worst nightmare. As parents we must allow for their dreams but also guide them in light of the realities they will face - again they will still thank you one day for saving them from a mistake and giving them the chance to choose a happy confident life. By posting this I don't wish to be doom and gloom, as there is much joy to be had, but i feel we have a duty as teachers and ex professionals to be honest at all times. Its not a job but children's lives and futures in our hands.
  10. Yes most definitely as particularly for contemporary training they will expect her ballet to be very high standard
  11. Hi this is all very relevant for musical theatre as the standards of classical ballet they expect is very high pictureinthefirelight
  12. Presented by Emma Northmore (Ballet Boost) at Pineapple studios for £65. I am pleased to be offering one day workshops on audition techniques with individual feedback forms for all dancers. Monday 24th Oct - those interested in Vocational Upper school auditions Wednesday 26th Oct - those planning to audition for Vocational Lower Schools Friday 28th Oct - Those approaching the minefield of Company auditions open to aged 16 and over. These days will be starting at 11am with a ballet class full of advice (body language, etiquette, presence, application of technique in a foreign environment etc)and many many more tips for the auditionee including as much knowledge as I can give of the work to be expected within each schools audition. They will need to bring at least two other leotard options as I may suggest a different style or colour will help etc! This will all be pointed out during the morning class. After a short lunch there will be a Mock Audition with a relevant guest teacher and we will be replicating the whole audition environment so they feel nervous and learn to manage this important and difficult aspect. These skills are lifelong for the potential ballet dancer so the day is open to all students wishing to refine their work and open up their chances of success in any stressful situation such as assessments, exams and performances. For booking or queries please email me emmanorthmore@yahoo.com. As i will personally be writing each form numbers are most definitely capped!!!
  13. Hi Hoglett whilst i haven't had time to read everything in depth please rest assured that feedback should be handled sensitively and never take one persons word for it on your daughters chances of success classically. I myself was told on many occasions (whilst at vocational school) that i was too short, too fat, soft muscle tone, go work in tesco!!! Sheer determination and an intelligence for the use of dance science and the many many options of exercises around have meant i have had a very fulfilling career. I learnt early on to accept that i needed to swim alongside my daily ballet to look the same as others who were 'born that way"!!! many natural classical bodies do not have the mental capacity to withstand the profession or apply corrections but none of this is apparent until 16 plus. I didn't grow or dramatically improve until i was 17, came bottom of many assessments but out of my year of 18 of us i, was one of two or three who succeeded. Look at the top ballet companies and there will be some with long bodies or larger hips! When it comes to being a true dancer these things done always matter if they have that something special. Unfortunately its only post 16 that the 'dancers' get to show these aspects at auditions. I recently had a private student who has since proved that hard work pays off. I have always liked to think that anything is possible and she has proved this ten fold. One yr ago she arrived with bent legs, dodgy feet and many bad habits and not much vocal - i applied every ounce of knowledge i had and all the exercises .....she took these on board and worked daily. In sept she will Iive her dream of attending good vocational school. At this young age the body changes so much, dreams should be chased and teachers should inspire not destroy. And many things are possible with the combined use of determination and intelligence. For those looking at other art forms - Ballet is always looked at first! even if they audition for a street dance course. Find a teacher who keeps the fun and passion alive and your young dancers will thrive xx
  14. It may be of interest to know that timing is everything! If parents are on here trying to help their graduate find work or if it will happen next year take a look at the companies tour schedules - email to take co class on their return when (unfortunately) injuries may have occurred - for example as ENB approach Nutcracker season at the coli is a great time as they often need extra dancers etc! Post holidays when random things occur, dancers choose not to return or get pregnant. Be clever and don't give up! NB you get one try at Mathew Bourne - so don't audition when not fully fit, wait. Hope thats useful!
  15. Hi everyone, its interesting to see the comments about class sizes. I only created the Ballet Boost courses this easter and the USP is precisely that - capped class sizes AND no performance!! Its all about the opportunity to further their training and parents can choose a couple of classes to watch. But it exists for training purposes. I will not allow some to have attention and others not - everyone is corrected and feels valued wether they are vocational or not. Don't worry too much about exams - we often use this to group students but the first day will often result in changes. The grade invariably does NOT reflect the standard of the dancer unfortunately!! Some very talented children are in lower grades etc. Goodluck with everything
  16. There is much dance companies can't specify by law! Best thing is to dig deep through their website and dancers and gauge if there is a "type"they look for. Certain ones will go for tall willowy types while others like powerful strong dancers. I once flew to vienna only to be omitted from the class as i didn't have blonde hair!! But they couldn't possibly advertise this. One extremely talented dancer didn't get into a very well known company because he was spanish........and they had too many already! Again this was not written anywhere just passed back to him verbally.
  17. Thanks!!!! thats so kind! Looking at rambert or sadlers to move my associates too - could be exciting while i plan my big school!! ooh........do you think anyone on here knows how i can raise a massive amount of funds for this ballet school???
  18. I agree with many of the above comments and have already had issue with adverts being posted on to my pages without permission......just saying!! Can i be cheeky enough to pint out my own small associate scheme? Surrey Ballet Masters in Coulsdon surrey - I personally teach on it and also cover teach for RBS associates and Central and tring. My classes are small and the training personalised to each student. To "put it on the map" so to speak i am looking at studios in London - a question to you mums? is there a need or are we flooded with these courses already? My approach is very current and achieves fantastic results hence i feel we need something different! Good old fashioned floor barre, technique class and repertoire with mentoring as part and parcel of what we do........good luck to you all out there in the search for what suits your child best x

  21. The Surrey Ballet masters course has now been reconfigured to be Ballet Boost! After a high demand from Vocational students last year, I have made the decision to move everything to London to access the very best teachers and to make it more accessible. The cost is £250 for juniors 11 am - 3/30, then mid and seniors are £320 11am - 530 approx 4 classes per day. Take advantage of 10% off before the end of April (full payment can wait as long as booking is made!)
