  1. My DS has always been very keen on going to the Hammond and boarding (he's only 9 at the moment). Yesterday I broached the subject again, trying to make sure he knew what he was asking to do. "You will have to go all week without seeing us, and we might not be able to see you every weekend". His reply "that's ok, you can come on Fridays and stay in my flat!". He actually thought he would be fending for himself like his 18yr old sister does at upper school! ????
  2. Pas De Chat, is your DD able to come home every weekend, and what time does Saturday class finish? I would also like to know more about the academic side as my DS is very keen to audition for year 7 but I am in two minds as at the moment he is very academic. ????
  3. Thankyou 2dancersmum, he does take his lessons very seriously and listens really well so hopefully that will get him through the audition. I think it's just me that's nervous!????
  4. My DS has an audition date for Hammond associates, does anyone know what they look for? I believe he will be joining in with the classes, but as he's quite new to dance I am a bit worried he will be out of his depth. ????
  5. My son recently started dancing after years of watching his sisters. He has chosen not to tell anyone at school, but he loves his lessons every week. Hammond are auditioning boys only for their associates. The closing date was this Friday 15th January but the audition date has been moved from January to February so they might accept a late entry.
  6. she will have access to a car while she's at home but if she passes her test before she finishes, the school is too far way for her to drive there by herself. Also I don't like the thought of her driving around while she's so far away and can't call us for help when she needs it.
  7. we have a dilemma regarding driving at the moment...DD will soon be turning 18 and has been begging to learn to drive, except she's away at vocational school and would have to squeeze driving lessons in during school holidays. Not sure wether to book a crash course over summer or a couple of lessons a week over summer and then lessons each time she's home. we were going to wait until she'd finished in 18months but she's desperate to drive. ????
  8. I have PF myself and resting doesn't really help as it's worse after being inactive. stretching the foot before getting out of bed in the morning really helps. You can do this using a theraband or something similar or before you stand roll your foot over a tennis ball for a few minutes. Orthotics also help and you can get these from a podiatrist who will also assess your posture and suggest other treatments. x
  9. My DS is also aged 8 and auditioned for the first time at Preston. He is only grade one and fairly new to ballet so he wasn't familiar with all the steps but managed to copy and keep up. I would say use your arms and perform, steps can be taught but performance isn't as easy to teach. I did make a rough list of what he was asked to do, not sure of the spellings but here goes: glisse plié full plié chasse into lower arabesque battement sauté/changement eshappe relevet/turn hope that helps but would also add my DS enjoyed the whole experience, it was just me that was a nervous wreck! ????
  10. it is a beautiful place and such a safe area, I had no concerns about leaving my DD there. ????
  11. Ballet West are very understanding, we arranged a mutually convenient audition date over the phone.
  12. My DD would be interested in trialling some pointe shoes. She currently wears grishko but she has haglunds deformities on both heels, one much more prominent than the other, and her shoes always dig in leaving a mark afterwards. I'm not sure if it would be possible to get pointe shoes that would allow for this?

  14. I didn't know about the taster day but that would be great to help him decide if it's what he really wants.
  15. I have been looking for a bag for a long time though that is suitable for a boy. Boys dance things seem to be very limited and all the dance bags I've seen are quite girly. ????
  16. my daughter has this capezio bag which is a reasonable size and has lots of pockets got different accessories. http://www.dancedirect.com/uk/Products/Accessories/B117/
  17. he's only going into year four this time, but he hasn't been dancing for very long and is only in grade one. We have just moved him to a more serious dance school as he started asking about doing auditions and going to full time dance school, and I know from my DD's auditions that the competition is quite fierce. He may change his mind but I wanted to make sue he has the best chance and is prepared if he does still want to audition at 11. The open day is a good idea pictures as he has been asking to go and see the school again.......he's only been there to drop off or pick up his sister up to now.
  18. thank you everyone for your replies. my DD went to vocational school at 16 so I don't have any experience of auditioning for year 7. does anyone know what sort of level/grade they should be at that point?
  19. thank you billy Elliott, that's a lot better than I was expecting. Now I just have to hope he gets an award. Does anyone know how many awards are given for hammond?
  20. Hi, I have searched this topic and found lots of information but I was wondering if anyone knows if boarding costs are included in MDS awards. I had discounted full time dance school as I didn't think my DS would be happy boarding at such a young age, but he shocked me today by telling me he would love to live at dance school and wants to audition for Hammond like his older sister.
  21. SwaybackSapphire do you still have any of these left?
  22. I emailed miss Lewis to ask about future audition dates and she said they would be coming to Preston in November, Southport is usually just before Preston.
  23. have you thought about doing s combined honours degree studying education with dance? something my DD considered do she could qualify as a teacher but with a dance specialism. http://www.hope.ac.uk/undergraduate/undergraduatecourses/danceandeducation/
  24. Hi anaballerina, My DD has three first year leotards which we bought for £46 each.........although they have been hand washed, the ballet west logo has peeled of the back of all three leotards. It is barely noticeable and happened after a couple of washes. if you are interested I would be happy to sell them for £20 each or three together for £50.
  25. wow, JulieW that's an amazing story. I think we may have a go at some auditions, I was just a bit worried that they would be asking him to do things he'd never heard of and didn't want him to be put off by it being to difficult for him.
