  1. It isn't just the fees, the parental income is assessed for the maintenance loan and possible maintenance grant for university courses too.
  2. No, that' s my point - it would still be the same if you went to University.
  3. flutterby - whether it is for dance or for other courses, including degrees, you are not considered independent after 18. Parental income has to be submitted to obtain any student finance. It is one of those weird anomolies, an 18 year old is independent and an adult except for student loans, your parents are still expected to fund some aspects if their income is high enough.
  4. The portico of St. Paul's (the Actors' church) features in the opening scenes of the film My Fair Lady. It is supposed to be the entrance to the Opera House. The audience is coming out at the end of the performance and Eliza is selling flowers on the steps.
  5. If the weather is fine, you can stroll from Trafalgar Square down The Mall to Buckingham Palace and enjoy St. James's Park.
  6. Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.
  7. Have seen To Dance like a Man - it is lovely and I would recommend it to everyone. Rowan, I completely understand that different people have different needs. Maybe it was shown somewhere that it was a "signed" version , but it wasn't apparent when I hit the record button. I would simply have liked to have it clearly labelled so that I had the choice.
  8. Just looked this up on Google. It is run by the same person who set up South Coast Ballet based in Poole a few years ago - it closed recently. The standard was not very high and I did not recommend it to my pupils. Other teachers I know personally in the area also felt the same.
  9. It all depends on how many move up from Prep 2 class as to how many places there will be available for new entrants. Edited for clarity
  10. I am not sure that an official guardian would be needed - boarding schools require them because they close during exeats and school holidays and the pupils need to have somewhere to go. In fact DH and I were discussing this just the other day. When he was at boarding school (parents abroad) it was always an option to stay at school during exeats and holidays, although he often went to his Godfather's family.
  11. Some years ago too, I had two pupils of the same age, one was a JA the other I hadn't even sent to audition for JA as she wasn't ready (she had joined me at age 7 and though promising had a lot of bad habits that needed ironing out). The girl who was a JA got a no for MA, the non-JA got a place.
  12. But if you follow a degree course you have access to student loans.
  13. There is a two page article in today's Times about Matthew Bourne and it does indeed say he started training at Laban aged 22. Have you thought of applying there Odette 92, or somewhere similar? As well as Contemporary dance and Choreography they have Classical classes and there are also teaching module options in the degree.
  14. Does anyone have comments to make about how results are handled too? It depends a bit when they arrive, but generally I read them out in class, but will omit any candidate who is not present on that day. If the results arrive during the holidays, parents are free to telephone/text me for their own dk, but I will not give out any other dancer's result.
  15. Sadly once Margot Fonteyn retired she was pretty well ignored by the Establishment!
  16. By accident I recorded the sign language version of "Good Swan, Bad Swan" - very distracting. I can't help wondering whether subtitles wouldn't be a better option for this type of programme. The constant movement really distracts while trying to watch the dancers because, of course, it isn't in time with the choreography.
  17. When they changed the 50p piece many years ago, there was a long backlog before all machines could be updated. One of the halls I taught at then had an electricity meter that took 50p pieces. I used to have to go to the bank to get bags of the old 50p coins. Although the coins were no longer legal tender, the bank was very accommodating and kept supplies for people in that situation. It lasted months!
  18. I didn't mean that the students follow different courses, but that as their individual aims may be different, their starting ages can be too.
  19. As Rambert divides itself equally between Classical and Contemporary, it is not unusual that there should be a wider range of ages. Most classical senior training aims to start at 16 (or 17) whereas most Contemporary training starts post A-level at 18 or older. However I am sure the dancers can't be divided that simply into different categories!
  20. It has the reputation of being one of the top schools in Europe, and like all the others is very difficult to get into. But that is all to the good as it means the standard is very high.
  21. Never worry about seeming pushy - you have a legitimate question to ask!
  22. I too would suggest Fulham Broadway tube. Buses can get totally gridlocked if there is a lot of traffic.
  23. Thanks for your replies taxi4b and Lucinda.
  24. How does the fit compare to Grishkos which seem to have a longish vamp?
