  1. Surely the problem is that the ROH isn't providing an essential service? They are not even directing people to appropriate alternatives. Those of us who don't live locally will often have bags with us. The use of the cloakroom was more useful to me than any of their other initiatives to improve access, I would happily pay for the service if necessary. The only left luggage facilities I could find on the net were at train stations which are extremely expensive and more importantly very inconvenient, this is the problem with not knowing the local area!
  2. I thought the French one, Mary Agnes (can't remember surname!) was lovely
  3. I got some of the soft gel ones (without fabric on) from savers at a fraction of the price of actual 'dance' ones. Worth a look as they are the same!
  4. I would say technique depends on the quality of the teacher above anything else!
  5. My daughter is the same age, we only have a couple of the more embellished leotards but 8-10 is right for her. The 10-12 was huge but these leotards are in ages rather than numbers so may be different. We do have a couple of other Bloch items which are also in 8-10 though so I think their sizing is probably big on the whole for children.
  6. I can't honestly say I dont feel any different dancing in split sole or full sole. I can see why soft pointes are used as the precursor to doing the entire class in pointe shoes as the balance etc is different. I would have thought that being really soft would negate some of the benefit though, although would be comfier!
  7. Isn't the idea that they are hard to mimic pointe shoes? I've never worn them but do no breaking in with pointe shoes!
  8. Lovely! Was he pleased with how it went? And wow, their pointe shoes are loud at the beginning!
  9. Takes me about an hour just to do the Ribbons!
  10. Sometimes parents aren't on board for a good reason- finances, time, realities. I think your best bet is to try and compromise. The other school may not be your first choice but if you could spend 2 or 3 nights there doing a 'block' of lessons it may be much more convenient and economical and you could commit to academic work the other evenings. My kids have a limit on activities, I also say that they have to give up something to add another lesson. Yes part of this is to see how serious they are but it's also because I don't have an inexhaustible supply of money, time and energy!
  11. Has she had a general check over/ blood test at the vets? They probably need to check for kidney disease, diabetes etc. Toilet problems were the first sign of a problem in mine, although there are also loads of inocuous reasons for it maybe worth checking x
  12. If they want you to choose one school would the other school alone provide more lessons? When you applied to rbs did you & your parents discuss it with your teacher first? What did they say would be the best route? Are you rellying on parents to get you to extra classes/ associates etc?
  13. What level are you working at? Do your parents want an academic route for you?
  14. My first fitting wasn't great, they did look at my feet but didn't explain how pointe shoes should feel and I got bruised toes. This was a fitter which some people on here recommend too. I don't think everywhere is as good with adults as they are with young people and of course if you have easier to fit feet the whole thing will be a simpler process! Although their customer service was dreadful the shoes aren't necessarily wrong, I would show them to your teacher. in answer to your question yes most shoes stretch, how much depends on the brand, Bloch don't suit me so not sure about those. The stretch is in the width though. If they have hard wings these also soften and feel much more comfy. I didn't find the Bloch particularly hard though. Most people have slightly different size feet, how different are yours?
  15. I think being willing to audition is a really positive thing in itself and whatever her career long term will provide valuable experience. As for feet I think it depends, if she's going to struggle to get over pointe shoes she may not be able to do classical ballet but I'm sure the schools are experienced enough to know whether that will be the case. Royal ballet are known for liking nice feet, above and beyond what is functional. There are still some in the company with straighter feet
  16. I don't think there's any problem as long as they are for you, it's only noting when they're bought purely to sell on
  17. It's interesting that Europe has been mentioned, I've always found the attitude is far kinder and more inclusive where children are concerned. I've had staff entertain them with a few magic tricks, bring them treats from the kitchen, take them for a little walk around the kitchen, stop and have a chat it's really lovely! I do wonder at it being the 'vast majority' of our English kids that are so badly behaved that they run around restaurants shrieking. My experience is the majority are well behaved with a minority being like that, although obviously the havoc they create is disproportional to their numbers! And of course even nicely behaved children will have off days. As long as an adult deals with whatever misdemeanour I think fair enough being a child is about learning and pushing boundaries and obviously that has to be dealt with by the parents. Going back to the original post obviously it was a misjudgement to take the child but sometimes children don't behave as they do at home and given the excitement of a trip out to the theatre perhaps it was uncharacteristic. I definitely would have expected one of them to take her out as soon as possible depending where they were sitting as it wasn't fair for her or those around her.
  18. Just keep going they'll get used to you!
  19. Yes ROH says under 5s will not be permitted entry and I've never seen a younger child than that when I've been there. They also give an age guideline which is generally at least 7.
  20. I don't think so with one class a week. Are you worried about getting high marks?
  21. If she's an rbs teacher and says that she won't get in as I parent I would presume she was correct and make the decision based on that. I'm sure there's always something to be learnt from an audition though and always a chance so depends on whether you want to proceed or maybe try somewhere else where her body type won't be so much of a problem? They get a huge amount applying for rbs, who knows exactly what they look for but they can surely be very picky about finding it!
  22. How do you think she would cope with the classes as I understand they are quite long? Both in terms of concentration and strength with her being only just 8 and very petite?
  23. If she's a lovely dancer I'm sure it's probably not going to put them off at this stage, things change so much. I was tiny at that age but grew and my youngest is at least 4 inches taller than her sister was at the same age. It's all so unpredictable at age 7/8!
  24. It's difficult, they may also presume that she will be too small. It may also be in her favour that you are tall and she could edge up the centiles chart. I have children who are very different heights, I'm not sure how much they can tell from parental height!
  25. I would mention it to the teacher out of politeness. if she's small and I presume one of the youngest to audition she will look petite so not sure you would need to mention it?
