Katymac Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 DD wants a 'ballet cake' & I need some sugarcraft decorations......help - where from? Ideally icing ballet shoes or a stencil of a ballet dancer Thanks ps it's her 16th birthday
Lifeafterballet? Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Asda do a tube of ballet themed sugar craft decoration to include shoes and tutus. I have also have a photo of a fantastic cake like a tutu skirt but can't find a way of adding it to this thread ...... Anyone able to offer advice?!!
Katymac Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 I've seen one like that: I can buy lace, ribbon & net to do the tutu bit & a sheet of icing to cover the cake & then something on the top .......<------ this is the bit I'm missing
taxi4ballet Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 I got lots of little sugarcraft ballet shoes from a lady on ebay a couple of years ago
Lifeafterballet? Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Just realised your the lady who has lots of auditions coming up - have you got time to make a cake too?!! We've only done one audition so far but I'm looking forward to the weekend to recover ready for the next one!
Katymac Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 Well we normally do about 6 Ballroom comps a year (just got back from Blackpool at the beginning of November) & we aren't doing anything at all this year........so that's where I found the money for the auditions I'll make the cake while at work (I'm a childminder - the children can help) & decorate it while she is at class I'm buying ready made cake toppers (just flowers) & the frill won't take very long - no hemming just gathering and a nice bow She wants lilac/purple - so ready made bought rolled out icing, flowers ordered. I have silver net, purple ribbon (from our wedding cake oddly enough) So it's all sorted!! I'm great at cheating 2
Anna C Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Katymac, hope you don't mind but I'm going to move this thread to "Not Dance". :-)
Katymac Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 No problem (I don't really venture 'out there' - I am a wuss) But I'm sorted now anyway Thank you 1
taxi4ballet Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Could you possibly buy a swiss roll and carve it into a pointe shoe shape? You could cover it with pink icing and add ribbons... That could go on the top of the cake Or maybe fashion one from ready-to-use white icing? You can water down food colouring and use that to paint it.
Katymac Posted November 18, 2013 Author Posted November 18, 2013 I bought some icing flowers - the 'tutu' will have to be enough If she whinges I'll stick her newly scrubbed pointes on top I'm thinking chocolate cake with marshmallow fluff middle because I like it 1
Katymac Posted November 18, 2013 Author Posted November 18, 2013 & I've just realised I haven't 'bought' her anything apart from the icing flowers to go on her cake I cheated (again) & used my Tesco vouchers to buy her a Hudl...........
LinMM Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Hudl? (iPad didn't like this word wanted "husk" instead!
Jan McNulty Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Lin you are obviously so busy you never watch adverts! Tesco have been blanket advertising the Hudl for weeks - it's their version of a tablet, very reasonably priced compared to some but I don't know anything about the quality or usability of them as haven't had an opportunity to try.
LinMM Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Aha thanks Janet! I had never heard of it! When I go up to London there is no tv or wifi so become sort of incommunicado for a few days!! In fact not even a cooker just a microwave oven. A bit like being a student in Hall in the old days(before computers!) I have seen an ad for the new IPad air which looks fantastic but will have to wait for a couple of years!! Ive even managed to see the John Lewis ad twice and the Baily ad once!!
2dancersmum Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 I think I must switch off during adverts as I am only aware of the Tesco Hudl, the John Lewis ad and the Baileys ad from reading this forum!!! The only ad I ever seem to catch is the M & S one over and over....
LinMM Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Well I only caught the Baily ad because someone on this forum said it would be on whilst Black Swan was showing the other night. I quite enjoyed the film the second time best not to think of as a ballet film and its quite good on the horror score I think!! The ad was so fast I couldn't appreciate fully may be better second time round too!!
Katymac Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 & the main thing is it's purple!! & I won't be watching that film - I am a wuss & I just completed the ruff/tutu for DD's cake (& the decorations haven't arrived yet <gulp>)
LinMM Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Are the hudl........was thinking of purple shoes or something on the cake!! Sorry we've got a bit off topic but I'm sure she'll love the hudl if its anything like an IPad!! I'm practically wedded to mine my partner keeps telling me!!! On second thoughts better get lots of chat in now as once she gets on it that's the last you'll hear from her for a while!! (Only joking.......a bit) When is the big day?
Katymac Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 tomorrow If I make it that far!! Yes the Hudl is purple & if she can read books on it then she can leave the laptop and the Kindle behind when she goes away for the weekend as the weight of them both is silly (but apparently essential)
LinMM Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Oh tomorrow.......hence the gulp at the decorations not having arrived!! Will keep fingers crossed! If they don't you could always say there's a nice surprise waiting for her at the weekend(presumably will definitely be there by then!!)
Katymac Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 (edited) They just arrived - very nice!! She is taking the cake to Ballet class on Friday - she had her party at half-term, her last free weekend before Christmas Edited November 20, 2013 by Katymac 1
LinMM Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Hope she has a lovely day tomorrow Now what's your reward gong to be for making such a lovely cake!!
Katymac Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 Running her to singing, extra long private dance lesson (birthday treat) & drumming class Then an early night as DH will bring her home from drumming 1
Katymac Posted November 21, 2013 Author Posted November 21, 2013 Cake a success Birthday a triumph Phew!!! 6
aileen Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 I'm ashamed to say that, although I have made a number of cakes for my dd's birthday, I did once order a ballet shoes cake from a commercial company. It was very realistic and even had ribbons. I didn't try to pass it off as my own handiwork, though. The cake itself didn't taste that nice (you know what most bought cakes taste like) but at the age that my dd was children don't notice that type of thing and are more impressed by the look and decoration of the cake.
Katymac Posted November 21, 2013 Author Posted November 21, 2013 & now it's gone! (it was my own cake & buttercream but someone elses flowers & icing - I just assembled!)
LinMM Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Looks...or rather looked lovely Katymac.......glad you took a picture of it first.....a record of your hard work!! 1
Katymac Posted November 22, 2013 Author Posted November 22, 2013 It tasted OK - she wanted a victoria sandwich with buttercream so it wasn't spectacular.....I'd have had chocolate with Marshmallow fluff (if I was allowed cake, which I'm not )
LinMM Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Now that is tough making a cake and know you won't get even a little piece of it!!
porthesia Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 I came on here to ask for a picture and there it was. Such a beautiful cake, I'm really envious of your skills. Hope she had a wonderful birthday. 3
