Upper school application/audition requirements

Hi all,

I thought it would be useful to start a topic where we can collate the application/audition requirements for upper schools because it will soon be upon us. Also any insight from those who have recently been through these auditions would be appreciated.

Does anyone know what the application requirements are for Central and Rambert. Ie what photos they are looking for and any other helpful information. (It doesn’t say on their website)

Both Rambert and Central are generally just an application form with a headshot prior to preliminary audition. Obviously subject to any alteration this coming year. Theres another thread with possible prelim/final audition dates.

We got professional shots done, but only as my daughter and I tend to argue if I try and do them! Never had it done professionally before, but it was worth it for us. Lots of her friends didn’t though so it’s definitely not expected.

Thank you! This is a very good point

I think that it is more important to get your dance teacher's help with the photos, rather than a professional photographer.  Or at least seek their advice on which photos are the best to submit.

Just to add, there are a number of photographers who specialise in audition photos, they are often ex dancers.

Theres no need to get the professional ones if you are happy doing them or can do them with your dance teacher. If money isn't a major object then get them done professionally but find a proper dance photographer. Kate Frost is great if you can get in with her.

We used Kate Frost and were very happy with the results. Always done pictures myself (sometimes with help from ballet teacher) for lower school/ intensives in the past, but having professional shots done for Upper school was the right decision for us.

We didn’t, I’m not sure it’s also that necessary as they can expensive. Try asking around friends & family.
A friend of ours teaches A level photography so offered her services. A few odd looks from the cleaners at school though as my DD held the poses against the only blank wall in the art Dept, which happened to be the corridor but can’t complain as the photos were great and got where she wanted to be.
It can be as simple or as complicated as you want to be but realistically the success at the audition is not based on the merit or how much someone paid for their photographs. It’s simply a supporting aid to the whole audition process.  ☺️

We've just been through the application and audition process.

We chose to get professional photos done (we used Kate Frost too and were very happy). For us, using a professional took the stress away - I didn't have to struggle to find a blank wall, worry about whether my photos were of good enough quality/in focus etc. and it took away the risk of arguments!

We have always done our own photos before. But, for us, it was the right thing at this stage

Seems to be becoming the more common think nowadays but it’s not necessary. Make sure your DDs teacher helps with photos though as schools are looking for correct placement and technique. If you can afford professional photos though then they do look lovely and are nice to keep for the memories!

It will depend of skin tone.  My DD is very very pale, was going to wear her coral degas, but it looked washed out in photos.  if you are taking them yourself, take a few practice shots in different leos.  A professional photographer will probably ask you to bring a few options.

How far in advance do photographers tend to get booked up? My dc is going into Year 10.....want to be prepared

DD is auditioning this year and we started contacting photographers a couple of weeks ago, they all had just started booking for audition shoots. We decided on photography by ash in the end.
