The 8th February saw a Gala performance of La Bayadere in Brno, Czech Republic featuring Fumi Kaneko as Nikiya, Yasmine Naghdi as Gamzatti and Vadim Muntagirov as Solor (with Kevin O’Hare in the audience!).
Dream casting, outstanding performances from all three Royal Ballet Principals, a debut from Fumi, and a rapturous reception/lengthy standing ovation from a very appreciative audience.

Especial kudos to Yasmine who flew out early morning after her Juliet on the 5th February and, in common with Fumi and Vadim, was completely in character in an unfamiliar production with different choreography in places and additional stage ‘business’.

The question is: given the sensibilities in the UK, will La Bayadere be seen again in London? From my ‘white English’ perspective, adjustments would seem possible,  but it is those from relevant ethnic backgrounds whose views matter here. Meanwhile, I have to confess to absolutely loving the drum dance which Makarova did not include in her version for ABT and the RB.

As for the guesting model whereby an RB ‘team’ goes to another company together. More please!

Just for the record: neither Germany nor Austria or Switzerland did occupy the Czech Republic in the last hours.

😉😘😘

I know;  but I didn’t think I should start a separate thread. This one seems to be a sort of ‘collective’ and I did travel to Brno via Vienna 😊😉

Losing 2 opportunities for BRB dancers to perform the roles!

I don’t understand why this is necessary with so many wonderful BRB dancers.  Is it to use star power to put bums on seats?…

Another new company at Stuttgart, six more jobs for young dancers:

tnership between the City of Stuttgart, Daimler Truck AG and a number of foundations. More details to be revealed in a separate press release.

Of course, their artistic mission will not be forgotten. After all, the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS will also perform their own programmes, both at Theaterhaus Stuttgart as well as on tour. The JUNIORS productions only differ from those of the main company in their focus on promoting young talent – from emerging choreographers to team members in training in the technical department. The first premiere Renaissance (working title) of the JUNIORS is planned for March 22, 2023, as part

Active, more active, Theaterhaus Stuttgart: In the midst of the pandemic, the resourceful cultural institution sends a strong signal and launches a new dance company, its second parallel to Gauthier Dance! With the establishment of The Gauthier Dance JUNIORS//Theaterhaus Stuttgart, artistic director Eric Gauthier has fulfilled a long-held dream – to make dance fit for the future. The new six-member company is at the heart of the dance initiative. After all, the ballet school graduates between the ages of 18 and 22 are in many respects similar to the target group.
Since the end of January 2022, the first four Gauthier Dance JUNIORS have been preparing for their work in schools and other teaching institutions – with special educational formats developed by Eric Gauthier. They will also perform in their own programmes as well as in productions of Gauthier Dance. The first chance for audiences to get to know them will be in Ohad Naharin's cult piece Kamuyot, which will have its revival premiere at the 2022 COLOURS International Dance Festival this summer. From the beginning of 2023, the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS will be six and thus complete.
The founding of the company was made possible by a recently launched federal scheme. DIS-TANZ-START supports the first engagement of career starters in a professional company until the end of the year 2022.

If Eric Gauthier's philosophy were to be summed up in one sentence, it would be this: Dance is for everyone! However, in recent years, the artistic director of Gauthier Dance has become more and more aware of how important a particular part of „everyone“ is – the young. Especially since there is a principle that applies to any arts scene: If you don't actively seek out tomorrow's audience, you've already lost. The new and second dance company at Theaterhaus Stuttgart – the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS – is going to create that truly authentic connection. The six dancers, aged between 18 and 22, are to be engaged for three years at a time. Their most important purpose is cultural education. They will thus revitalise a format that the company could only offer infrequently, due to its busy touring schedule: The Gauthier Dance Mobile visits people who cannot come to the theatre themselves – for example in old people's homes, hospitals or youth centres. Thanks to the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS, the Theaterhaus Stuttgart can now schedule more such external performances than ever before.
From April 2022, the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS will start working with children and young people on a large scale with the MOVES FOR FUTURE initiative, made possible by a very special education par

of the anniversary month „15 years of Gauthier Dance//Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart“.

Leaving aside the JUNIORS’ considerable artistic importance, the establishment of the young company has a great social impact. For it is no secret that the chances of employment for young dancers are dwindling. They are caught in a vicious circle: no experience, no engagement, no engagement, no experience. A junior company bridges the gap between ballet school and employment in a professional dance company. This is also the view of Dachverband Tanz (Federal Association for Dance in Germany). Its DIS-TANZ-START programme provides a stepping stone for young talent. Theaterhaus Stuttgart has successfully applied for funding. And what a good thing it was – as the grant proved essential for the founding of the JUNIORS!

The Gauthier Dance JUNIORS//Theaterhaus Stuttgart
Dancers: Ayda Frances Güneri, Angelo Minacori, Arnau Redorta Ortiz, Maria Sayrach Baró

The remaining two positions will be filled at the beginning of 2023.

Ayda Frances Güneri
Born to British-Turkish parents, Ayda spent the first years of her dance training at the State Conservatory of Mimar Sinan University in Istanbul, followed by five formative years at the school of the Hamburg Ballet – John Neumeier. There she danced in performances of the Hamburg Ballet and the Bundesjugendballett as part of the curriculum. Her first engagement took Ayda to the Ballet Chemnitz under the direction of Sabrina Sadowska. During her two seasons with the Theatre Chemnitz (Saxony), she danced in numerous pieces of the extensive repertoire, both in full-length ballets such as Sadowska's Nutcracker, Luciano Cannito's Romeo and Juliet or Swan Lake by Eno Peci as well as contemporary works, by Samuel Mathieu and Anthony Missen among others. With stage experience as diverse as this, Ayda is undoubtedly ideally positioned for the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS.

Angelo Minacori
Angelo fell in love with ballet in the classes at ASD Tersicore's in his hometown of Palermo. From then on, his ambition was clear: to become a professional dancer! For one year, he trained with the Ballet Academy of the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, where he was regularly involved in performances at the National Theatre, thanks to the academy's cooperation with the Bavarian State Ballet. From 2017 to 2021, he attended the John Cranko School in Stuttgart – and also had plenty of opportunities to get a taste of the stage there, in the programmes of the John Cranko School and, of course, in the classics of the Stuttgart Ballet. After graduating in the summer of 2021, he worked as a corps de ballet member with the Paris Opera Ballet. The Gauthier Dance JUNIORS offers him even more space for personal growth as well as the chance to return to the city that became his artistic home – Stuttgart.

Arnau Redorta Ortiz
Arnau laid the foundation for his dance career in his hometown of Barcelona. During his time with the Jove Ballet de Catalunya, he already showed great promise as a two-time finalist in the Youth America Grand Prix. He subsequently moved to Germany for his dance studies at the the Ballet Academy of the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. After he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 2019, the Bavarian capital remained Arnau’s home when he became a member of the Bavarian Junior Ballet Munich as a scholarship holder of the Heinz Bosl Foundation. At the Bavarian State Ballet, he danced in works by Jiří Kylián, George Balanchine und Xin Peng Wang, in the much noted new production of the Soviet classic Spartacus and Wheeldon's Alice in Wonderland as well as in the title role of Kinsun Chan's Peter and the Wolf. After six years in Munich, Arnau is now seeking new dance challenges – with the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS.

Maria Sayrach Baró
Her hometown Barcelona is a real dance city. And so Maria got the chance to distinguish herself in a number of competitions even when she was still training at the tradition-steeped Institut del Teatre. After her degree, she spent a season in Switzerland. As a member of the Ballet Junior de Geneve, she danced in works by, among others, Stijin Celis and Thierry Malandain, before she decided to return to her roots: to IT Dansa, the young company of the Institut del Teatre under the direction of Catherine Allard. The two-year course prepares young dancers for their professional careers – and they learn from the best. During her time at IT Dansa, Maria performed in pieces by Akram Khan, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Cayetano Soto and Alexander Ekman. Chances are good that she will meet some of these choreographers again at her new company in Stuttgart ...

I love and absolutely adore Eric Gauthier, especially his enthusiasm when onstage and getting the audience involved. This is so true, from your post @Angela" "Especially since there is a principle that applies to any arts scene: If you don't actively seek out tomorrow's audience, you've already lost".

Gauthier does a lot to find new audience, e.g. going to town with his dancers and dance together with the audience.

Good luck for the new company❤

2022/23 Season: Transitions

Berlin, 21 March 2022 --- This Monday morning, the Staatsballett Berlin announced its 2022/23 season programme. Three premieres and seven repertory productions showcase the ensemble's wide range and present iconic compositions for orchestra and chorus.

The first premiere of the season, EK | EKMAN, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin on 16 February 2023, presents a cross-generational mix of Swedish choreographers. For the first time, the work of Mats Ek, one of the leading choreographers of the 20th century, who has influenced stage dance since the 1980s, will find its way into the Berlin repertory. Christian Spuck, who will take over as the Staatsballett's artistic director from the 2023/24 season on, will stage his work MESSA DA REQUIEM at the Deutsche Oper Berlin on 14 April 2023, combining dance with orchestral music, vocal soloists and chorus, a co-production with the Rundfunkchor Berlin. STRAWINSKY, a double bill which premieres at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden on 10 June 2023, comprises PETRUSHKA by Marco Goecke and THE RITE OF SPRING by Pina Bausch. Co-produced by the Pina Bausch Foundation, the Staatsballett ensemble will stage a piece by the legendary choreographer and founder of dance theatre for the first time.

Two productions by Patrice Bart, GISELLE and SWAN LAKE, are back on the programme, the latter celebrating its return to the venue it originally premiered at: the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. In addition, Marcia Haydée's version of SLEEPING BEAUTY and ONEGIN by John Cranko promise great ballet artistry. DAWSON, EKMAN | EYAL and LAB_WORKS | HALF LIFE present a wide variety of contemporary movement languages by established as well as up-and-coming choreographers. THE STUTTGART BALLETT travels to Berlin for guest performances at the Tempodrom whereas Tanz ist KLASSE!, the Staatsballett's education programme, will stage a performance at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Events such as BALLET CLASSES UP CLOSE, PRE-PREMIERE CONVERSATIONS and the discussion panel BALLET FOR FUTURE? WE HAVE TO TALK! add to the stage programme.

The challenging scores will be conducted by a total of 9 musical directors: Ido Arad, Nicholas Carter, Paul Connelly, Alevtina Ioffe, Dominic Limburg, Alondra de la Parra, Maria Seletskaja, Jonathan Stockhammer and Krzysztof Urbański.

Dr. Christiane Theobald, acting artistic director of the Staatsballett Berlin, is looking forward to a varied season:

"For the upcoming 22/23 season, I focussed my attention on the big scores, which have become milestones in the ballet canon thanks to their choreographers’ creations, showcasing and, at the same time, broadening the ensemble's wide range of skills. Also the question, "What is necessary to guide this art form into the future?" propels me to act. The Staatsballett Berlin embarked on a journey. I try to harness this energy as transitions are exciting moments of change, musically and artistically.“

Thanks. An entire program consisting of only The Cellist? Maybe it’ll be a new expanded version.

The Süddeutsche Zeitung reports that it is not certain if Igor Zelensky will keep his job at Munich. He was adviser to a Russian foundation tasked with establishing four major cultural centers, one of them in Sevastopol in the annexed Crimea. A video that has now disappeared from the net seems to show Zelensky with Putin presenting the project. No word from Zelensky or the Bavarian cultural minister so far. Zelensky is on sick leave which possibly prevents him, as the newspaper maliciously writes, from meeting Alex Ratmansky whose “Pictures of an Exhibition” will premiere tomorrow at Bavarian State Ballet. The Süddeutsche suggest Laurent Hilaire as possible successor, or Ratmansky himself, who was also strongly suggested by some critics for Berlin State Ballet. I don’t know why, he left his position as a director at the Bolshoi to work freelance and mainly as choreographer - why should he accept another direction now.

I'm not sure but I think I heard that Zelensky had an ultimatum until last week, like Valery Gergiev, former chief conductor of Munich Philharmonic, to explain himself about the Putin situation.

I feel like this could be another Russian artist bashing just because he is Russian. I loathe the article, to be honest. Governments always give the money for state institutions, such as opera and ballet. and therefore, they meet and greet with directors.  So what's the point, that Zelensky supported this ART center on Crimea? That obviously wasn't a problem before the war! I still have to see a statement where Zelensky supports the war. Show me, and I agree to fire him.

Meanwhile, I hope the dancers can shake off all the hostility and enjoy their awesome ballet week they have worked for so hard! I look very much forward to the opening tonight, with the 2 world premieres. Initiated and organized probably also by the ballet director....and I hope to see him onstage tonight.

I fear it was a problem since 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea. If you reed Ratmansky's Facebook text about artists in Russia who signed a letter of support for the annexation, that was more than meet and greet. No, Zelensky is not on the list, but supporting a Russian state institution in Crimea after 2014 could well be seen as having supported Putin. I know we have to be careful in our judgement, many of these artists have family and are afraid, and we always should ask ourselves what we would do in a situation like that.

It will be very interesting to see Ratmansky AND Zelensky on one stage tonight...

Ratmansky was there, waving a flag of Ukraine for the whole time he took a bow after "Pictures of an exhibition" - and there was a Ukrainian flag projected on the backdrop at the end of the piece, the last and very short projection after all the colourful Kandinsky pictures.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CblJs88gJuj/

If you recognize Amar Ramasar from NYCB: He not only was the repetiteur for the piece, he also danced because Osiel Gouneo and Yonah Acosta were injured.

Marco Goecke had dancer Antonio Casalhino hold a white dove at the end of his dark piece, without words and without music, a very powerful moment after the ash rain on stage. There's also a statement from the company with the Instagram post:

https://www.instagram.com/p/CblP-argJ60/

I did not see Igor Zelensky in the audience, but it is a huge theatre, I may have missed him. What an eventful evening!
