  1. Thanks @jeanette. The Vsevolovsky designs are the least interesting part of that particular Mariinsky production for me. The sets and costumes for ABT's version are much more interesting but suffer from having to be made for touring. I am probably in a minority of one in loving Dowell's production particularly the sets and costumes. Absolutely fantastical as a fairy tale should be. It got away from the heavy burden of tradition and offered something radically new and different. So disappointing that it was ditched. Too shocking for most people. @Dawnstar I have to say that I loved the Stuttgart version. Quite different and individual. It really gave prominence to male dancing and the sets and costumes by Jurgen Rose were lovely particularly those of act 3 which were the very essence of 19th century story book characters. Just marvellous detailing in the design and colour. Unfortunately ElIsa Badenes reminded me of a certain English princess and I couldn't get her out of my head which kind of spoiled the experience of watching it. 😏
  2. @maryrosesatonapin Because it is a dream, as I understand it, Siegfried sees the character of tutor in rothbart and vice versa. Nureyev was fond of psychological interpretation of character and creating dualities like this. They embody familiar /unfamiliar, love/hate, attraction/repulsion, trust/fear. Hence the confusion in Siegfied's mind in the dream as he grapples with his feelings in the passionate duets for the two. I know what you mean about the 'almost a gay love frisson" but I don't think that was part of the intent. Nureyev always like to push boundaries though.
  3. Have seen it live and on screen a few times. The concept is that the story is Siegfried's dream which enables the mirroring of the tutor and the Rothbart character . I prefer the white acts which have the least 'tampering'. In fact I think Act 4 is really good choreographically. I'm not sure whether it's the drab costuming of the other two acts which diminishes my enjoyment or the dance sequences. The two new young principals in this video are very good particularly Germain Louvet. But without Nureyev around to direct revivals I suspect the production has probably lost a lot of its original intention and drive and is performed rather dutifully these days. It's very dated now and I find it hard to like. Whether the POB will ever replace any of the Nureyev productions no one knows.
  4. It also available here https://www.france.tv/spectacles-et-culture/opera-et-musique-classique/972295-le-lac-des-cygnes-de-tchaikovski-a-l-opera-de-paris.html So to clarify, these performances are available on their Facebook page for 24 hours only and then on Culturebox and the Paris Opera website for a few days. Apologies for the confusion.
  5. Also streaming are the Ballet Boyz Romeo and Juliet and Akram Khan's Giselle. However they are geoblocked, but if you have the means to get around this like a VPN or you live in the relevant country, they are highly recommended. Romeo https://www.arte.tv/fr/videos/088015-000-A/romeo-et-juliette/ Giselle https://www.raiplay.it/video/2020/01/giselle-di-akram-khan-english-national-ballet-6cf26a42-b667-4f6b-817a-761b352f19bf.html By the way, the Paris Opera ballet performances on their Facebook page are NOT geoblocked
  6. Swan Lake on the Paris Opera Facebook page now for a few days. Other performances coming up Giselle An evening of Balanchine. "Like' their page and they will send you reminders. Scroll down a bit past the trailers and you will find the full performance. https://www.facebook.com/BalletdelOperadeParis/
  7. Thanks Jane. Very interesting. I was hoping you might throw some light on the subject.
  8. Completely agree re close ups being distracting. It was also unnecessary. The dancing was wonderful and should have been the main focus.
  9. I decided to look into this myself. It's interesting how this choreo came to be thought of as 'traditional' when in fact it was not the original Bournonville! It seems that the original Bournonville choreography for Act 2 was reset in the early 80s by Kirsten Ralov one time dancer and associate director of the Royal Danish Ballet till 1986. In the credits of the video below, she is not listed as choreographer alongside Bournonville but rather as Director. How different it is from the original is hard to know. For those interested the 1986 version can be viewed here. Something else to watch in this period of deprivation.
  10. Available till midnight tonight https://www.staatsoper.de/stueckinfo/video-on-demand-jewels/2020-03-21-19-30-3.html
  11. Thank you @toursenlair. Interesting to see this controversial updated production by Nikolaj Hubbe. Much of the Bournonville choreography in Act 2 is gone, along with the original music replaced by a very modern score and new choreography by Hubbe. There is much comic business in Act 1 which seems very unfunny these days and possibly some of the original choreography has been cut in Act 1. But Act 3 seems to be intact. This is the first time I've seen Alban Lendorf dance. Wow.
  12. This programme is available on youtube in 4 parts. Just type in the above words. I'm sure this has been mentioned several times
  13. The La Sylphide you mention can be found here. Not great quality unfortunately.
  14. It looked a bit like that but it was meant to be a grassy mound which opens up and subsumes her. I think it's a design issue which needs to be sorted out to make it clearer. I loved the six falcons (not real ones of course) sitting on the arms of some of the men in the hunting party. A very satisfying experience overall. Rather greedily, I watched it twice at home. Would love to see ENB's production again to compare. I saw it in the 70s when it was new but remember the villagers at the start of act 2 drinking and gambling with dice in the graveyard before the entry of Hilarion. And also the special effects and flying of the wilis but not much else I'm afraid . I thought Denis Savin as Hans (Hilarion) was fantastic. A thankless role but really well done.. And it was great to see the wonderful Ludmilla Semenyaka (a great Giselle in her day) as Berthe. So expressive.
  15. Valerie Lawson is the person to seek out. See her website. http://dancelines.com.au/
  16. A teaser for the January broadcast, featuring the first night performance and a few of the reinstated moments... It is interesting that in every interview or publicity for this new Giselle, everyone is at pains to point out that the version by Grigorovitch will not be replaced but will remain in the repertoire. Politics.
  17. a very interesting review of 2 casts, the second of which raises some fears in the reviewer about the possible future of the production. ( there are also some hilarious mistranslations) If you open it in Chrome you can read it with the help of Google Translate. https://www.kommersant.ru/doc/4170628
  18. Yes USA and Canada as well as the rest of the world. It is part of the Bolshoi in cinema live screenings series, just as Raymonda recently.
  19. The date of the screening is 26 January 2020. And hopefully available on the Bolshoi video channel for 24 hours after the broadcast.
