  1. I'd define the classics (with big C) as those that have stood the test of time, and basically sell out every time they are performed. So, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Nutcracker for sure, possibly La Bayadere at a pinch. A more modern classic would be Romeo & Juliet which certainly sells and will keep doing so; then the rest are down to personal taste I reckon. I'd always include Giselle, and La Sylphide (which has been running in Denmark for what seems hundreds of years!!), with La fille mal gardee included simply because its darn near perfect.
  2. I dare say it was contrived - but not by Darcey herself, more by the production team/director. Having someone 'pop in' to coach would be meaningless to most non-ballet people, unless it was Darcey who is known outside the ballet world, and so the students excitement at the famous face makes sense.
  3. oh lordy, do we have to start a third thread so we can talk about the performances of 2016/2017....
  4. After watching her dance SPF this evening, I'm all the more mystified that Yasmine Naghdi is not yet a Principal
  5. 8, 9, 11 dancers dancing - gotta be at least a £3m bill if they were paid their truth worth surely!!
  6. Surely a partridge would have soured in value, as we have wiped out all but 5-10% of them compared to days past
  7. have to say the the Sky telly guide's descriptions on Sky Arts' offerings have been shockingly poor. The Australian Swan Lake described as 'recently from the London Coliseum' (in fact, was from Sydney Opera House 2008) 'The Royal Ballet celebrate Peter Wright's 90th' (in fact its The Australian Ballet again, using the BRB production) Find I'm recording duplicates, just in case some of the descriptions do prove to be correct... I'm not optimistic!
  8. nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!! :-(
  9. think some people see it as a challenge to talk loudly enough to drown out the music
  10. I thought Sarah Lamb was exquisite, and Vadim Muntagirov shone as her Prince. Nothing too flashy, just a beautifully elegant response to the music. The supporting cast was excellent too - Francesca Hayward and Alexander Campbell gave a fine rendition of the Bluebirds (hers being one of the finest I've seen in recent years), Claire Calvert a magnificent Lilac, Kristen McNally having an absolute ball as Carabosse, Yasmine Naghdi and Beatriz Stix-Brunell as fine a pair of sisters to Flori as there can be! The corps de ballet looked glorious in the set pieces too - so an enjoyable evening was had from yours truly.
  11. Foteini Christofilopoulou was at the rehearsal for the Royal Ballet's 'The Sleeping Beauty', which opens at ROH on the 21st Dec. The photo call was of Sarah Lamb and Vadim Muntagirov in the Act 3 grand pdd. The performances opened now (from 21st Dec) Vadim Muntagirov, Sarah Lamb © Foteini Christofilopoulou. 16. the 'sold out' sign is up, so sounds like a successful venture!
  17. I admire your restraint - I don't think I could have avoided being very rude to him...
  18. I was very impressed by Brandon in the rehearsal - I usually only focus on the women to be honest (I'm with Balanchine on that! :-) ) but he was marvelous dancing with Celine Gittens then (she positively glowed!)
  19. I went to one live showing (Winters Tale) where the dancers' feet were cut off - at the knees in fact. We all complained at the interval and to the manager's credit it was fixed. And if you complained via their website, a free token was issued to see another cinema special of your chosing. It would seem that the projectionist used his judgement on this occasion to fill as much of the screen as possible from the live feed. In the 'warm up' before the curtain went up, this appeared OK and it only became apprent that it wasn't, once the dancing started. I think the live feed is not a standard cinema screen size, hence their problem.
  20. I think they produce a 6ft cast 'board' placed on the ground floor bar/foyer area.
  21. fast cutting around has ruined live music coverage. I want to see the band, not how clever you are at snapping between different camera angles... grrrr!
