  1. I think they said something about this in the Insight, which i think is still available on the ROH YouTube channel (via the ROH website). Can't remember what was said though!
  2. I think the hope of the creators was that after using the novels as a jumping off point, they made you interpret the 'story' (or set of feelings, or whatever) in a way that makes sense to YOU. In that way, there is no right or wrong way to appreciate/enjoy/interpret the work - and gets the grey matter jumping (for example, in the novel, Mrs Dalloway and Septimus don't meet but sorta sense London's streets the same way - here they have a pdd). Of course, my version of looking at this explanation may also be as completely wrong as my take on the ballet, but its my thought processes so feels right for me, if you see what I mean.
  3. I remember reading, years ago now, that beer contains carcinogenic compounds. Gulp! But then it also said that to accumulate harmful levels you'd have to drink 100,000 pints. By which time I think cancer would be your last worry....

    but that destroys the joke...
  5. Yes, I think they do - and the Balanchine trust (and Pat Neary in particular!) are there at the moment to make sure they do, and then some. As for fairy variations - not seen the old, old versions, so can't comment. Lilacs variation is another I'd brand as quite ugly though, and makes me wince every time I see it. And as a last thought - yes, Woolf Works is great! :-)

    beautifully mansplained lol
  7. Thanks Nina. I realised I should have just gone to their website and checked myself - which I did as you were posting. Copy on order! :-)
  8. I love Apollo - it just seeps into your soul - and just has so many iconic moments. But then I do love Balanchine for the reasons you don't seem to (which is fine, we all like/dislike different things in the rich tapestry of life :-) ) - I love the clarity of the pure dance and no distractions. And no histrionics, beautifully lit, gorgeous steps. Bliss! :-)
  9. Cygnets - yes, so much of it is forcing them to do such ungainly, ugly steps. I'll slightly defend Ondine when Ondine on stage. I'd dump the rest in a heartbeat though
  10. I do actually like 'bluebirds' when done well, but know what you mean. Agree with the rest though! I have far too comprehensive a list of pet ballet dislikes - topmost would be most of Tetley's 'stuff', the psychobabble of much of MacMillan, the insufferable twee of a lot of Ashton (though uppermost would be the sisters ruining Cinderella), the purposeful striding rather than dancing between poses by the Russians, electonica bleeps and noises rather than music in much contemporary dance, and of course, gloomfest lighting!

  12. I must confess, that I really like the latest ad for Nationwide Building Society (the one with the poem about joining together to make it a better world for everyone. not just the few)
  13. its awarded for what's seen by the critics within the UK, within the alloted time space. So yes, definitely subjective, and will depend on what they saw within that time period. The figures went - 450 nominations, 55 nominees, 11 winners from 1st Sept 2015 to 31st Aug 2016.
  14. Here are some pics of the award winners - will post up some of of the other nominees as soon as I can! :-) The Winners! © Dave Morgan. Courtesy of DanceTabs / Flickr See more... Set from DanceTabs: Winners at National Dance Awards for 2016 Courtesy of DanceTabs / Flickr

  22. You don't need to have read Woolf - Woolf is the spark that set the choreographic process into motion. I've not read Woolf either - so perhaps someone who has can say whether having done so, increases their involvement in the piece (or not) The middle section is what you would normally think of as typical McGregor, the 1st and 3rd not (but with McGregor definitely in the mix). The music is largely hauntingly beautiful (especially in the 1st and 3rd sections). If your local cinema not too expensive, you're really not losing much if you give it a whirl! :-) As Wayne himself says - go into it with an open mind and pull out of it what you enjoy.
  23. Cerys Matthews on the wireless just now, played a track from Woolf Works, and says that Max Richter's album (due out Friday) will be album of the week on 6Music. So lots more sections will get an airing over the course of next week on the various shows. Also gave a plug for the shows at ROH. I do so love 6Music!
