  1. I can sympathize with you all ..... this time last year I spent a small fortune on my credit card on hotel accommodation & travel costs for auditions. If I count all the auditions we had to have a hotel stay for, plus then any further finals/Dada auditions, it came to 9 hotel bookings!! A lot of it I found was down to bad luck if you got an early morning time slot. I'm afraid it doesn't get any easier though once they get in somewhere. On top of any fees to pay (as even with a FULL Dada there will still be accommodation to pay for), the initial outlay to get your dc set up with everything is horrendous. Then of course there's the monthly medical insurance premium, the ongoing cost of pointe shoes (as Tulip said, they need new ones approx every 4 weeks due to the amount of pointe work), other items of dancewear needed as time goes on, travel costs when they travel back & forth home for exeat weekends & holidays, any costs for trips the school may organise, & so on. It certainly is a huge commitment financially.
  2. Wayne Sleep and his ladies are on The One Show, BBC1 in a minute.
  3. Really feel for all of you ... this time last year it was our turn and reading through all your posts makes memories come flooding back. Do try and enjoy the actual audition days though, because as stressful as they are, in a way I wish I was doing it all over again! The waiting for the postman and opening those letters is by far the worst part. Good luck everyone.
  4. I've just looked back at all my correspondence & in fact we had letters in large A4 envelopes on every occasion. The first letter we received following the prelim audition, which offered my dd a place & also an invitation back to attend the Dada audition, was most certainly in a large envelope as it also contained all enclosures like registration form, insurance & Bupa papers etc should we wish to accept there & then & pay the fees or alternatively there was a cut off slip at the bottom of the letter which had to be completed & sent back if we could only accept the place if successful at the future Dada audition.
  5. My dd is currently on Tring's lower sixth dance course and I THINK she said there are about 28 on the course.
  6. For Tring, we stayed at the Holiday Inn (just south of Aylesbury), situated on the A41. It was about a 10 min drive down the A41 into Tring. It was £83 but think that was a flexi rate, so could maybe get it cheaper if you chose non-cancellation option. For ENB, we stayed at the Jury's Inn, right next to Imperial Wharf stn. About 10 min walk to the school. Can't remember rate though, I'd have to dig papers out. Several others stayed there as well. For RBS, we were really lucky & got special deal at the Hilton nxt to London Bridge station! Very convenient for us as we are from the south & nxt morning just 2 stops in to Charing Cross on main train network.
  7. When my dd did her Rambert audition last year, we had an 8.45 one so had to stay overnight. We stayed in the Premier Inn in Richmond, literally just the other side of the river. We drove though & it was a 5-10 min drive to Rambert school the following morning Also saw one other girl staying there too. I don't think there are any hotels within actual walking distance of the school, but others on this forum may know otherwise.
  8. Sounds just like us last year :-) Good luck katymac.
  9. My dd was offered a funded place on Tring's sixth form dance course, but never played a musical instrument or sang at any of her auditions. If my memory serves me correctly, I think the interview part took place as part of the solos. I think the girls just answered a few brief questions either before or after they'd performed their solo. Nothing too formal. My dd also got kept back for physio assessment at the second Dada audition. Some did, some didn't.
  10. Tring Sixth Formers just had all their appraisals this last fortnight too.
  11. Had an email from them today more or less saying the same thing.
  12. I ordered a couple of items off Dance Direct the Sunday before last & my dd received them at her school within a few days, so absolutely no problem there. However, just posted one item back this week for a refund, so we shall now see. Fingers are crossed.
  13. Think at the moment, ir's only winter season until Feb, then he's going back to do Tring's third year graduate tour, but not 100% sure. This has all come about very recently.
  14. Pascal was due to graduate in 2014 but has left Tring early to take up contract with Scottish Ballet. He's already started.
  15. Of course they won't mind you telephoning them. I'm sure they will understand if you explain the situation and that you are overseas & just need to know what dates there are. As I said in my previous post though, just bear in mind that if your dd wants to be considered for a scholarship, then it will entail two visits as successful students applying for a scholarship are then invited back for a second audition.
  16. No no no! Think I'd better point out, Clapham Junction is the opposite direction to Victoria, it's actually SOUTH RAD HQ. So basically the 170 bus runs from Victoria, through Sloane Sq, Knightsbridge etc, then over bridge into Battersea (where you would get off at the stop just after Battersea Square) then carries on down to station. So station and Victoria are opposite directions. So if you want to get 170 bus back to Victoria you would come out of RAD and cross over to opposite side of road & bus stop is just to left - ie not the bus going in direction of Clapham Junction. Sorry if I created any confusion.
  17. All correspondence from Bedes came via post, but correspondence from Legat itself was via email and phone. Do ring Elizabeth Mackey when half term is over and I'm sure she can discuss available dates with you. When my dd auditioned we had the choice of 2 dates., but whether they auditioned students with exceptional circumstances outside of these dates I do not know. There is also a physio assessment as well by the way.
  18. Maybe not an ideal walk to do in the evenings Michelle. Some parts well lit, but not all. Perhaps you would be better off getting the 170 to Clapham Junction. Literally only takes 5 mins. When you come back up the lane from the RAD, the bus stop is just to your left on same side of road. In fact the stop you would have got off at having previously got 170 from Victoria. Bus then goes along parallel to river & down road to back entrance of station.
  19. Dramascientist - last year the Legat preliminary auditions were held in Dec & Jan & then the scholarship auditions in late Feb. You need to contact Elizabeth Mackey, the administrator of Legatl and she can advise you. Prospective students also have to have an interview with either the Head or a senior member of Bedes as well, but this can all be arranged on the same day.
  20. I've commuted daily to RAD headquarters for two weeks a couple of years ago when my dd did a summer school there & I found quickest & easiest way was Clapham Junction & then either walking (15 mins) or hop on the 170 bus from back entrance of station (5 mins). You can't walk across bridge from Imperial Wharf, it's trains only.
  21. Yes it did start in 2011. I know about 6 girls who went there, 2 of whom completed yearc11 there & graduated in 2012 and the others did two years and graduated this summer just gone. Not sure if it is running for this current academic year though. It's run by Mary Goodhew at the BBO headquarters in Barnes, so you'd need to contact her to find out more info.
  22. Fully agree with Klaris, & with hindsight my dd knew it was a very foolish mistake just performing a variation. It probably looked to the panel like she hadn't put any effort or thought into her audition & couldn't be bothered! As yoy say, choreography is a major part of the curriculum at Rambert. But I think back at the time she had far too much on her plate by auditioning for way too many schools, plus all her GCSE work, and didn't even pause to stop & think about the importance of it.
  23. My dd auditioned last year and got selected to perform a solo. She was one of seven kept back, but then unfortunately was the only one not asked to stay for interview/physio. (She didn't get offer either). Whether there is any significance in this, but out of the seven who did solos, she was the only one who performed a classical ballet solo, all the others did a contemporary piece. Where she also realised she messed up was she performed a variation from one of the ballets, rather than an individually choreographed number. Think this went against her and she now regrets this. On the day, whilst the first round of auditions are taking place, parents are given a tour of the premises and can ask any questions. Someone on my tour actually asked the question of whether being kept for a solo etc is indicative of whether they are intetested in you & we were told by the member of staff categorically no. However, I personally don't know of anyone bring offered a place who didn't get asked to perform solo. Nevertheless I do know of someone who, like my dd, did a solo but then no intetvirw/physio, and got offered reserve list.
  24. Or don't forget, there's also Young Dancers Academy in London. Check out their website. They offer excellent training and also feed many young dancers into RB lower school.
  25. Sorry, that website address should have read www.accesstohe.ac.uk. The predictive text took over!
