Help with finding obscure ballet
Don Q Fan replied to MoVR's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
I put the subtitles on they are saying "deep Jana" not that I can find a ballet of that name on Google. The word deep was all lower case on the subtitles. Chopiniana would seem the nearest had I not seen the subtitles. Hope that helps. -
No cast sheets at Covent Garden
Don Q Fan replied to The Sitter In's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
For years in the German theatres I have been to I've paid 50¢ for a cast sheet and Hamburg and Venice definitely still had cast sheets for sale this year. ROH and any others could easily have them available and just charge 50p. -
World Ballet Stars Gala Geneva June 11, 2023
Don Q Fan replied to Sabine0308's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
Some great names dancing. Short program though for a gala only 7 pieces but I suppose if the pieces are actually longer then it's more bang for your buck. Would love to see Wagman. Would have loved to see it.- 9 replies

Royal Ballet Casting for Autumn 2023-24
Don Q Fan replied to a topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
I think Magri/Corralles has potential for some fireworks. Good it's being relayed. That's the one I'd like to see most. Hope to see a few shows but do we know how extortionate the ticket prices will be as that'll ultimately be the deciding factor? I just hope they're not too OTT.- 612 replies

Definitely Laurretta @FionaE! @Sabine0308 I saw the 2nd cast I think? Here is a photo of the cast for the evening I love Jewels. I thought this was well danced, with beautiful set and costumes. I think Emeralds was probably the best of all 3 for me, I felt Gouneo was not quite there in Rubies this time, last time I saw him he was on fire! In Diamonds some of the corps de ballet work looked a little off line/untidy, BUT that could be because I am used to viewing Balanchine from above and for this performance I was seated in the Balcony right below the royal box. The Diamonds principals, Baronova and MacKay, were making their debuts as well which was nice and they were very well received at the end. I have to say it was a treat to see Casalinho and the petite Margarita Fernandes in the Emeralds PD3 after having seen them at the Ballet Icons and Fernades also danced in Rubies. She must be going places! I really enjoyed the show and will definitely be going back to Munich in the future. Some curtian call photos:- Emeralds - Zeisel and Zhang Emeralds - M C Bono, A Cassalinho and M Fernandes Rubies: Ibraimova/Gouneo/Skoblikova Diamonds: MacKay/Baranova Diamonds: Baranova and MacKay -

Really looking forward to a trip to see Onegin next year! Just back from seeing Jewels and it really is such a beautiful theatre they have in Munich and lovely dancers too. -
I got the survey too but the prices were so ridiculous i said no to all of the scenarios! They are not on this planet. Since covid I have seen much less ballet and I have to say it's better, as I appreciate what I do see more. Just saw a lovely performance of Jewels in Munich, and for pretty much the same cost as a trip to London, only with a far superior seat for a lot less money....

Oh yes Scheherezade totally agree with all you say! Usually I find Makhateli and Simkin pretty sparkling but it lacked that sparkle last night and was rather underwhelming, it definitely did not hit the note for me either. some photos from the curtain call:- The full line up with apologies to Reece Clarke who is just out of shot on the far right hand side! Sergio Bernal (in red) Lucia Lacarra and Matthew Golding Katja Khaniukova and Aitor Arrieta Nicoletta Manni and Timofej Andrijashenko Francesca Hayward and Will Bracewell The delightful youngsters Margarita Fernandes and Antonio Casalinho. Iana Salenko and Dmitry Zagrebin danced Don Q PDD and were wonderful - so good to see Salenko. Also in sot is Calvin Royal III and his pianist. L-R Simkin, Makhateli, Bernal, Golding, Lacarra, MacKay, Nuzez, Gudanova, Picone, Hayward, Bracewell, Casalinho, Fernandes, Cirio, Manni, Andrijashenko L-R Bracewell, Casalinho, Fernandes, Cirio, Manni, Andrijashenko, pianist, Royal III, Salenko, Zagrebib, Gilbert, Bezard, Khaniukova, Arrieta, Naghdi and Clarke- 10 replies

Ballet Icons Gala - 19 February 2023
Don Q Fan replied to San Perregrino's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Thoroughly enjoyed the show. For me the stand out pieces were Khaniukhova and Arrieta in Liam Scarlett's Chopin Romance which just beautiful and Borealis danced by Laccara and Golding. Hayward and Bracewell were gorgeous in MSN Dream too...hopefully this might mean some Ashton in 23/24? My least favourite piece was Picone's Elevarsi followed by Carmen and Cinderella (am sure the POB dancers did that 1 or 2 shows ago) and Creature was spoiled for me by the music being far too loud (typical of Akram Khan note to self take earplugs). It was a joy to see Salenko again after a long gap and pleased to see she's still got it. The finale of Le Corsaire was lovely and I didn't realise at the time just how young Fernandez and Cassalinho are! All in all a great night out.- 10 replies

New Year, New Season Ballet wishes
Don Q Fan replied to jmhopton's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Well Onegin would be a top choice for me both at ROH and Dutch National Ballet (even ENB if it could come back into rep). For DNB this is closely followed by Frida and Jewels plus DonQ if Ted Bransen is feeling generous! Ashton and Balanchine are always welcome by me anywhere. -
Very sad news indeed😥

Living up north, for example, as you well know fans have the added costs of (now horrendous) train fares, and a hotel, if no matinee is available. For the same money, or indeed less, I can fly to Amsterdam or Berlin, to name but 2 cities, and see top class ballet in a great seat for a much lower ticket price. Since Avanti trains prices are wickedly high for terrible service, and ROH now pretty much overpriced for the seats I like, I have either stayed local or gone abroad and generally become a lot more choosy as well since covid lockdowns taught me to do without. Hey ho.

Tokyo Super Stars Gala November 2022

I too was very surprised to see Zakharova in the photo on Instagram. No shame I guess. Yes we shouldn't mix art with politics but somehow it still grates. Oh well.... -
The Passion for Fashion and Ballet Auction at Kerry Taylor in early December has a number of very interesting lots relating to Pavlova, Nureyev and Fonteyn and includes 3 Sleeping Beauty tutus, 2 of which were Dame Margot's. It's worth a look at the online catalogue, items start on page 7. I'd love to have Margot's pink Princess Aurora tutu! https://www.kerrytaylorauctions.com/auction/details/-passion-for-fashion/?au=107&pp=48&so=3&pn=7&g=1

BALLETS BASED ON REAL LIFE
Don Q Fan replied to capybara's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
I really enjoyed Tchaikovsky I think I saw it twice, I loved that it included bits from all his ballets and the ending sticks in my mind. I don't particular recall the love theme, but it was a while ago now! I am pretty sure I even saw Malakhov himself in the title role in one performance. -

A couple more for the list from Dutch National Ballet and SB Berlin 1. Frida (which is the extended version of ENBs Broken Wings) 2. Mata Hari. 3. Years ago, when Vladimir Malakhov was still AD, I saw a ballet called Tchaikovsky at Staatsballet Berlin about the composer, and that was really good. -

Did anyone see the premiere of Sleeping Beauty in Berlin? Thoughts? The few photos I've seen on Instagram the costumes look glorious. I did always like Malakhov's SB and wish that would bevfabced again as the sets and costumes for that were wonderful too especially the topiary garden where conical shaped trees opened to reveal a dancer.....
