  2. Shobana Jeyasingh Dance are streaming their last offering for this season called Contagion and it's about the Spanish Flu pandemic, and is now extremely topical. I have enjoyed the SJD offerings, she is a very interesting woman and I find the dance creative and deeply felt. Created in 2018, Contagion commemorates the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 which killed more people than the First World War itself. Inspired by the nature and spread of the unseen flu virus, the work has become particularly relevant to the world we find ourselves in today.

  6. Thank you for this. I really enjoyed it. The first ballet I found a little distracting as it cut between the dancers (it was well cut but to me it interrupted the flow), but with the other dances this was OK. So lovely to see such excellent work.

  18. Shobana Jeyasingh Dance with Material Men redux on Monday 20 July at 7pm (for a week I think). A work powerfully rooted in the Asian experience of indentured labour whereby millions of the poor from the subcontinent were transported to work in colonial plantations when slavery was abolished. It is performed by two charismatic dancers who bring their own personal connection to the story, a story told through archive text and images as well the brilliant dance skills of Sooraj Subramaniam (Bharatha Natyam) and Shailesh Bahoran (Hip hop). Shobana will also chat with Guardian Dance Writer Sanjoy Roy about the work, and answer your questions online.
  19. I was listening to Megan Fairchild In conversation with Wendy Whelan about Albert Evans. Megan remarked that fish don't know they are in water until you tell them, I thought how my thinking and understanding of black dance issues have moved a bit since the BlackLivesMatter demonstrations. One of the things I have been doing is watching a lot of Black companies while the opportunity is here. When I went back to watching a usual company it seemed to lack something and it brought home to me how White ballet is and that we need diversity in dance. Wendy also said that Albert had been very good at making people feel comfortable around him, and I thought of all the extra work BAME people have to do around White people. These are good personal challenges for me.
