San Francisco Ballet Announces its (20)/2021 Season
Janite replied to Bruce Wall's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
I have been gifted the whole season and apart from being very excited about this I wondered if anyone has a good knowledge of SFBlallet dancers and who I could be looking our for. I will also post as I watch, though I am not as knowledgable as many on here I hope to give you a flavour of them.- 20 replies

English National Ballet: Nutcracker Delights

I have just been told the better word is 'queue' not 'pigtail', so much to learn. -
English National Ballet: Nutcracker Delights
Janite replied to capybara's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Like you I feel very uncomfortable with the Chinese dance done in pigtails. While the finger pointing has, thank goodness, been replaced in many productions the pigtails have remained. Phil Chan (Final Bow for Yellow Face) explained that the pigtail was a symbol of oppression similar to the yellow star the Jews had to wear. It would be such an easy fix to get another wig design. Here is the interview with him and it is worth a watch in my opinion. He is a thoughtful person. (he talks about this around 6 mins) -

I am also enjoying 'Dance Dreams Hot Chocolate Nutcracker' on Netflix. Debbie Allen, who was in the film 'Fame' some years ago, has a dance school and they put on a Nutcracker with lots of different styles of dance, all of which are taken very seriously. It's a bit of fun at Christmas if you feel in need of it.

Really enjoying this one, so glad you pointed it out. Thanks.

Janite replied to taxi4ballet's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Maybe, when we are able to do things again, if anyone is going to watch anything at the BFI they could post; so that if there are others who want to see it they could join in and so spread both the joy and the cost. -

English National Ballet Digital Season
Janite replied to Irmgard's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
I have watched Yuri Possokhov's work 3 times and I find more in it each time. I agree with LACAD at being disappointed not to see more of Frolla and Hawes, but for me a rich work. -

One of the good things about ballet, music and dance in general is how it transcends divides.
-
I can’t work out how to share it at the moment, but I can tell you it starts at 28 mins in and I found it very interesting.
-
That sounds like a frustrating evening, I am glad you are getting another opportunity albeit on a smaller screen. I clearly need to check the blurb before I post it!
