  1. American dancer and choreographer, Travis Wall, posted a video on Instagam that is getting a lot of shares. In his Instagram Story, he talks about dancers gathering in front of Good Morning America early Monday morning to do a live ballet class. Fantastic idea imo and should blow up the story more.
  2. Just saw that Rina Kanehara & Aitor Arrieta are part of the ENB crew on the Queen Mary 2 crossing the Atlantic for Cunard's Dance the Atlantic voyage. What a fun summer job. They are doing scenes from Swan Lake. Francesca Velicu and Daniel McCormick revisit their Le Corsaire pas de deux. And Erina Takahashi and James Streeter are dancing Akram Khan's Dust. Tempted to take up cruising 🚢
  3. Totally agree. I saw him co-win Emerging Dancer in 2017 with Rina Kanehara and have been following since. Great to see him get this role. (Just wish ENB would announce casting sooner...)
  4. Yes, she is cast as Victoria. They bigged up the role for the film. From the look of the trailer, they turned Victoria into a pivotal character. And giving Francesca Hayward the 'And Introducing' credit is huge imo in the movie business. The producers obviously fell in love with her, like the ROH audience has. Cats is a marmite show as a musical, so I expect the movie will be the same. I am just going to suspend disbelief, sing along and enjoy 'our own' Frankie stealing the show 😻

  10. I saw The Royal Ballet School in the Linbury Theatre Young Talent Festival and was bowled over by ‘Untied, Undone’. They said: it is a new ballet Ashley Page has created on students this year. It's based on the 4th movement of Mendelssohn's 4th symphony showcasing men from each year group of Upper School. What a joy to watch and I imagine to dance. How special to still be a student and participate in the creation of a brand new ballet. Would love to see the adult company do this as well. Be a great gala piece.
  11. I get MacMillan, just not why the abuse of women is such a theme in his work. I don't think this is because I am American so much as because I am a feminist / human who just isn't entertained by rape, whether it's onstage, in cinemas, or in real life. And am sure many here disagree, but Lewis Segal's description of Mayerling as a "hodgepodge of pantomime clichés, Soviet-style gymnastics and aggressive classicism" expressed why I personally am not mad for this ballet (independent of the plot). Give me Romeo & Juliet every season, even with the invented harlots 💃
  12. I don't think I would love it either if I hadn't seen it live. To me, part of the magic is that the very knowledgeable audience eagerly waits for that scene. You can feel the crowd rooting for each and every member of the corps as they slowly descend. Then the huge applause at the end is like a wave of love for these (mostly) unsung heroes. It is an electric moment. I agree watching it as a recording can be boring, but here is a nice behind the scenes video as they rehearse

  15. I saw him dance Espada (in the ROH) and it was one of my most fav performances literally ever. Would be amazing to see Hirano in Japan

  17. I know MacMillan is considered a genius (happy to agree) but I find his obsession with rape and abusive relationships excessive. The NYTimes asked: "Does the aesthetic beauty of ballet tame and make palatable the violence we see onstage?" For me, not so much. Am sure many disagree. And apologies if this is off-topic. Fwiw, R&J is my fave of all his work. But I like Paris better as Shakespeare's befuddled suitor than MacMillan's potential abuser.

  19. How do they celebrate a last performance for a male dancer? Do they get flowers? All the best to Mr Kish 🌼🌼🌼 Maybe he will come back to the RB in a management role someday.
  20. Before seeing the programme, I had a stray fantasy that Darcey Bussell would come out and do Sylvia. But delighted to see her tango with Gary Avis. And Mayara Magri did a lovely job with one of my favourite pieces. My surprise and delight of the evening has to be Ondine. Have never seen it and Frankie Hayward was enchanting. Praying the RB will do the whole ballet soon 💙
  21. Tonight's Insights had Beatriz Stix-Brunell rehearsing this solo of a heartsick flower girl from Nocturne by Frederick Ashton. So that will be in the Gala. KOH stated he wouldn't reveal the program, so nothing else was confirmed. But Ondine was mentioned a few times in the panel discussion and Aurora / Sleeping Beauty was mentioned a LOT. The panel was: Dame Monica Mason, Donald MacLeary and Sir Peter Wright, moderated by KOH. Some lovely first-hand memories were shared.
  22. Great to read all the reviews above. Triple bills get hashtaged ‘Mixed’. Which is how I typically feel about them. Tonight was one of the best I’ve seen at the Royal Opera House. Yet only Symphony in C makes me want another ticket. Not just because I am a Balanchine junky. That music and choreography is pure joy and what a showcase for the wealth of talent at this company. Having never seen Firebird, I was double excited to be there for Yasmine Naghdi’s debut. And she was fantastic, as you’d expect and many have detailed above. Great role for her. I should have done my homework, though, to be prepared that the rest is more folk dance than virtuoso ballet. Edward Watson did some nice partnering and some emoting, however the part doesn’t call for much more. And I know it’s historic design and all, but his costume looked like Santa’s chief elf, not heir to the throne. Then Mabel and her sisters, I mean the enchanted princesses, come out and spend a lot of time doing a folk dance where the most challenging bit is catching an apple. Quite a few dropped balls there. But a waste of their talent imo, especially casting senior soloists (Stix-Brunell, Calvert, Kaneko) to a group role that corps members would relish. When the rest of the colourful characters come out I was less bored, but still really just waiting for Yasmine to come back. Which she does to fiercely save the day. I’m very hopeful that we will get her doing her Firebird super hero for the Fonteyn tribute. Mixed bills do let us see lots of dancers and different pairs. A treat to see Francesca Hayward as Vera get to dance with Matthew Ball. Was reminded of all the discussion around Juliet as a role more suited for a younger dancer. Nunez would never be cast as Vera would she? Not just because it is a smaller part. She’s perfect as Natalia. Also a treat to see Francesca with James Hay in C. And a joy to see Alex Campbell on stage again in anything 😁
