  1. For age 6 by ‘intensive’ I am guessing you perhaps rather mean seeking additional fun workshops? Lots of local theatres will often offer a fun family workshop event linked to a dance performance… pretty sure the ROH offer events suitable for a six year old linked to Nutcracker…& possibly so too do BRB, ENB & Northern…. RAD, BBO (& possibly RBS now with their new affiliate initiative & primary steps) also may hold workshops for the younger dancer too.
  2. Maybe I’ll add taking my grade 5 theory of music to my ‘bucket list’…. I ticked off taking RAD Intermediate ballet a few years ago (almost 35 years after doing the old elementary 😮😂) so perhaps this could be next 🤔
  3. My point is that any element of teaching music should involve sharing the vast array of genres, instruments, composers, performance styles, delivery methods (eg. radio, records, digital, live performances from busking to Opera - again so many places to discover music!). And maybe enable pupils to select area of their preferred interest to delve deeper into for project based work perhaps….? I know my own musical endeavours got curtailed by the insistence to continue beyond grade 5 instrumentally you had to take grade 5 theory… and I hated the dry teaching then so stopped the lot!! Regret it deeply now of course….
  4. Well I wish that were true & that schools would offer an option of pop or rock music as part of A level music. One of my offspring sadly dropped A level as it was ‘too dry’. They are accomplished with Grade 8 in Trinity Rock & Pop one instrument Grade 5 several others in ABRSM and plays with Jazz & Swing bands & Orchestra but over emphasis on very intense classics left him very uninspired & so he dropped the A level. If only schools & teachers could embrace a wider variety & tailor teaching on a more individual level rather than just making each student do exactly the same… and in a class of just 5 disappointing it was not even discussed….sigh
  5. I agree! And love you using word ‘wit’ - too often missing today & worse if replaced with base slapstick (like horrid ‘sisters’ interactions in RB recent Cinderella…IMHO anyhow)
  6. I actually think intensives that are NOT aligned to a school perhaps a better option as the competitiveness perhaps a little reduced? Although it’s always there let’s face it in some form or other in this game!! YBSS years back had the while ‘this is the Royal barre’ thing going on which was rather intimidating to non RBS kids but at least it wasn’t seen as an audition for any school place. Malvern I think a happy balance between great training & happy & friendly downtime!
  7. Tickets just gone on sale for first performances! Theater Royal, Bath 17-20th July....I've booked mine! https://www.theatreroyal.org.uk/events/london-city-ballet/
  8. Curious why no longer Goddard? He is a truly amazing & charismatic dancer
  9. Lovely acknowledgement email for joining as a ‘friend’ with a newsletter to soon follow - am getting such a good feeling about this happy re-addition to the ballet world! 🥰
  10. I’m guessing it’s a paragraph outlining a dancers personal artistic aims/goals/reason to want a specific job type of stuff… so not restating what’s already in cv but additional info an applicant might want to share/tailored to specific job… Others may have better more specific advice
  11. The dance programme in Bath & at Sadlers Wells are different I think…. Anyone recommend which I should bust a gut to get to as both not achievable!
  12. There might still be time tk apply to attend a YBS scholarship session…. We benefited from these several times as otherwise attending was not possible & RBS intensives have a means tested funding which I think if you get offered a place you can automatically apply for & get as long as below income thresholds (think it’s a sliding scale as to what you get but seems a fair way to do it) Also look around gif local arts charity organisations in your home area as there are often ones that may assist with things like summer courses, dance kit etc…. May only be bursaries of £100 up to around £500 but every little helps in this game & again, this helped enable offspring to do intensives
  13. Really don’t understand why the top Uk upper schools are not coaching older students towards this…afterall, they are supposed to be getting them industry ready & if this is a good route in (& you only have tk read the biogs in any RB programme to see how many dancers benefited from PDL) surely it’s a must? Yet schools seem to act hush hush if they do enter one or two favourites.. surely they should want almost a whole year group to at least aspire to enter?
  14. Can’t help but think if you can’t beat ‘em then you’re gonna have to join them!
  15. They all seem extremely young mostly…. in the UK (rightly? wrongly?) we tend not to train to the level that a 15-16 year old can produce a principal standard solo from classical repertoire as part of general training… with more emphasis on classes rather than private coaching…. Which route is better for producing successful ballet dancers who can enjoy a long performing career I wonder???
  16. Beyond exciting! I notice you can join as a friend with various payment points…just signed up! Wishing this venture every success as it does fill a void many of us on here I think feel there has been in the UK ballet scene! I always thought it was LFB I saw do La Sylphide at The Palace Theatre in Newark….but I’m now wondering if I’m fact it was LCB? Either way it was a totally transformative moment in my life…. Must’ve been early 1980’s? If anyone on here is able to clarify, that would be great! I vividly remember costumes (the kilts…the mini wings on romantic length white dresses with tartan sashes…am I remembering right?) & moody lighting & great storytelling from the dancers….and great dancing too of course! Think it was first time that I really appreciated the athleticism needed by male dancers!

  18. That was my Dad’s thoughts too…. He did also pull off strands of lambs wool from barbed wire when he saw his much a box of ‘animal wool’ was in the Nottingham dance shop 😂 I recall bubble wrap was quite the new thing for packaging in the early 80’s….
  19. Finally plucked up to ask for tickets for this for Xmas only to find there is not much left.... Would dearly love 2 great view seats - any price seats considered (including box share) or will go solo if can only get the one....but think this is one ballet the Hubbie would enjoy if view good! Nunez always my favorite and I've so wanted to see Bolle dance live...Fingers crossed you lovely Forum folk may help me with this!
  20. Sounds like Musical Chairs plays out in the German Ballet scene!
  21. Oh this would be fantastic! & I for one do see a space for a London based but with wider UK touring ballet company....& lets hope this provides more job opportunities for UK dancers also!
  22. I used to use bubble wrap to fill in space between tights over toes & shoe & to protect rubbing at front top of the box…. Worked really pretty well (must say never had bare feet as seems to be todays fashion/dancer preference which I suspect would lead to sweat issues as PDQ suggests…) You did get the occasional ‘pop’ noise as a bubble came under pressure & burst 😂😂😂 It was my very non dance Dad’s suggestion (he came from an engineering background designing steel supports for underground tunnels….maybe shouldn’t got him to turn his design skills tl designing the perfect point shoe 🤔)
  23. Ironic really that often the ones getting all the attention are the best….& often they get to be the best because they are supplementing their training with loads of extra private coaching (often kept quiet from schools/teachers/fellow pupils) So the schools & teachers pat themselves on the back thinking ‘wow, what good teachers we are to get such great results’ and then if there is general mediocrity it’s kind of hidden…. 3 monkeys approach…. If you or a funding body is paying for premier training you should not need to pay for extra outside of it… indeed, young bodies require care & rest time too & training hours should be enough in full time vocational training & more could cause burnout/injury not to mention the money drain…. Lots to consider. I assume the poster to be still be a dependant…. This is something to really discuss with them & they should help you with this battle…. I speak as one who never braved doing this for myself & wasted years in poor training environment (& it killed my love of dance) but also as a parent who has regrets that I didn’t kick up more of a stink over poor practises for own offspring in dance & other fields…. These type of issues are multi fold in education sadly
