  1. Hear, hear ninamargaret. The ballet is an utter joy from start to finish.
  2. BRB performed Le Tricorn under Peter Wright. The dancers were taught by Lorca Massine, son of the main man himself. Despite this the ballet was popular with neither the dancers or the audience. I would love to have seen Dupond in it. I did see London Festival Ballet perform the work I remember Patricia Ruanne as the Miller's Wife and Alexander Grant as the Magistrate but I cannot remember the Miller. Regarding Don Q, a version of the Kirov (we called it Kirov Lite) came to Birmingham in 2008. I sat there, beaming, through the first act which always makes me think that Petipa was a genius. I thought the same when I saw Vishneva and Ruzimatov at the Opera House some years before. Anyway, I almost nodded off during the intervening acts but was bolt upright for the last act. In Birmingham the Kitri was absolutely jaw dropping. Her name meant nothing to me but I was determined to remember her. It was Viktoria Tereshkina. A star was born!
  3. In my dreams i dance Myrtha, Gamzatti and Tatiana. If I really get carried away you can join Marie Larisch and Mitzi Casper to the list along with absolutely anything and everything by Sir Fred.
  4. I do hope the new Lises include Yvette Knight. Added to that I expect Delia Mathews will be given a turn. Having said that it is by no means a given that either of these ladies will be able to fulfil the really difficult technique the role requires. This is absolutely no slur on either of them. The list of real ballerinas who could be terrific Auroras but never attempted Lise is pretty surprising. I went to a talk with Jennifer Penney who had success in all of the classics and she was asked about Lise. She said she would never dance it as it was 'far too hard'. I understand Antoinette Sibley danced it once but was taken out of the role pretty quickly. Lynn Seymour never tried it, saying in her autobiography that she was 'not the butter churning type'. I may well undermine my own argument by saying that it may well have been an issue of timing and more recent examples as Sylvie Guillem and Darcey Bussell were viewed as being too tall. However, my seminal point is that not every ballerina has the right combination of technical talents to give the role its full value.
  5. 4 principal vacancies but only one replacement. I have absolutely no issues with the promotion of Yasuo Ajsuji but there will be a real scramble next year. The incoming director, whoever he or she may be, has a galaxy of talent to develop and work with.
  6. I have a special place in my heart for the Chappel designs for Les Rendezvous. By this I mean the floaty white dresses with pink or white trim. I think my love of those increases every time I see the most recent incarnation of this ballet, complete with washing up gloves. Frankly hideous!
  7. I have finally found this on Amazon and pre-ordered mine. Many thanks for the 'heads up' warning.
  8. Many thanks to both George C and Janet for their reports on the performances this week. I am sure they will have an absolutely fabulous time, even if in floods of tears, tonight. I envy them both.
  9. She clearly has a very strong relationship with Sir Peter Wright and he has had dealings with the Japanese ballet set up for some years. I envy the National Ballet of Japan and salute their decision to make such an exceptional artist their director. I had the privilege of seeing her in the school's graduation performance of Sleeping Beauty and she danced the Bluebird pas de deux with the late Errol Pickford. I followed her career with SWRB and 5 years with BRB and saw many of her performances. My absolute favourite memory was her last performance as Aurora, partnered by her great friend Kevin O'Hare. Right at the end as she bourred the length of the stage down to the front she was in floods of tears. During the curtain calls she embraced Kevin as if she never wanted to let him go. .
  10. A VERY Happy Birthday for 2 weeks time George C. I really hope you enjoy hugely the BRB season in Birmingham.
  11. Regrettably I am not sufficiently proficient to do a link but, for me, the main surprises are that the first night isn't Momoko Hirata with César Morales but Celine Gittens with the man himself - Brandon Lawrence. Secondly Delia Mathews is giving performances with Yasuo Atsuji. Two performances I would very much like to see. Throw in Jenna Roberts and Tyrone Singleton and you have all the bases covered for me.
  12. Full casting is now on the BRB website. I was wrong about Momoko Hirata doing the first night. I am seething with jealousy as I will miss that performance Janet, you were right!
  13. I don't dispute she is a very effective Juliet but my point was that it would be nice to see someone else on opening night for a change.
  14. Some really interesting cast combinations here. A whole programme without Momoko Hirata. I bet she is first night Juliet.
  15. Janet will be devastated. I think we all know how it feels when you get very excited about a special performance and then the main reason for going changes.
  16. Lots of Brandon in all performances of the triple bill. Seems odd to have him as Romeo on the posters but not have him dancing the role. Either way, if he is not promoted this season it will be time for a revolution.
