  1. You could also try Jessica Ronane if you google her name you'll find her website. She is a children's casting director for a number of shows.x
  2. I agree. Which is why I think the "dance underwear" (by capezio / bloch etc) is best. No underwiring, no padding and it won't fall off ! x
  3. I know people who were either not accepted, or were assessed out of WL who have gone on to have long and successful careers in dance. I know Upper School graduates who never got a contract. I know of US graduates who are working in companies alongside grads from Central etc. Really, I know that RBS is great, I'm sure it's a boost to have it on your CV, but please remember that there are other great schools out there and apart from the lucky few who are really nurtured, pushed and 'showcased' success is most often down to the hard work, talent and determination of the student. If a child has been accepted into Elmhurst/Tring/ENBS, but not RBS, don't worry, they'll be in good hands ! x
  4. LinMM yes the workshop is for adults with a good understanding of ballet technique. I have no personal involvement in the workshop, Kevin is a friend. He is away at the moment Michelle, but I'm sure he'll reply to your email as soon as he returns. x
  5. This may be of interest to those who enjoy ballet rep workshops http://www.balletworkshops.co.uk/
  6. I think that I've mentioned before, there are quite a few 'former' rhythmic gymnastic girls in DS's year at vocational school . They are lovely dancers with good technique and it seems the (gymnastic) training has benefited them. They are also allowed by the school to continue with their gymnastic training....something that was completely unheard of in 'my day'. Times change
  7. Dancermum, as a parent I personally think it is really important to explore any and every avenue that may, or even may not be open to our DC's. Your girl is lucky to have a mum who shows such an interest in her education. x

    OUCH !!!

My DD took up gym after trying ballet when she was about 7, she is an energetic powerhouse and the more outward physicality (if that makes sense) suited her much better than the more concentrated energy needed for ballet. She loved her gym and only stopped when she moved to secondary school and the gymnastics required her to train nearly every day until about 9.30pm which at the time wasn't viable. I think she'd like to start again next year. Regarding the stretching, as I said, one would assume that the trainers know what they are doing, but it is clearly wrong to push a small child to the point of tears and upset. x

    OUCH !!!

And in side splits (at least when they're beginners) the legs are also turned in. My DD (non dancing) did gymnastics for a few years and I also noticed that the instructors were very much 'hands on' ie pushing them down into splits....makes me shudder a bit, but they seem to get results and it certainly never did my DD any harm...I'm assuming (hoping !) the instructors know what they're doing. Edited to add that Jazzpaws, I do not mean to be flippant about your poor grandaughter's experience and if I were you I'd speak to the instructors, especially if it has ruined her enjoyment of gymnastics. x

    Room 101

How about looking for your mobile phone (so you can leave the house) whilst you are actually speaking to someone on it... :0
  11. I agree with Aileen regarding Macmillan's version....I love it. And Terpsichore, how lucky you are to have seen Lynn Seymour dance Juliet. There is footage of her and David Wall on youtube and it takes my breath away. I hope that you enjoy the performance tonight. x
  12. The ones I know of (and I'm sure that there are more) are PNB, (Pacific Northwest) SAB (School of American Ballet) and JKO (Jaqui Onassis school which is linked to ABT) , DS has a friend (European) who was offered a full scholarship to PNB summer and full time school. x
  13. Not sure if I should be posting this here or in 'Doing Dance', but a friend sent me this very interesting mini documentary about Dance and Sport Science.
  14. Not relevant at all . However I think that doing Intermediate is a good idea as it facilitates entry to dance BA and teaching courses. Even in the old days I don't think that it was a pre requisite for vocational school.
  15. Invisiblecircus, I also don't think there were any 'bra rules' when I was at school and also don't remember anyone wearing them. Having said that, it was a while ago and we didn't have the undergarment options that are available now
  16. The 'old' Advanced syllabus was a technical marathon......
  17. At DS's school the younger girls uniform is a white leotard. They almost all wear nude bodystockings underneath...Even little ballet girls develop earlier now than in years gone by, and I'm sure that many would not be comfortable without a little bit of 'armour'.
  18. Balleteacher, I had this exact conversation with someone yesterday ! I am not yet familiar with the new Advanced 2 syllabus, but we both agreed that with a good teacher, (and obviously a dedicated student) the vocational exams are more accessible now to those who may not possess the 'desirable' physical qualities than they were in the past.
  19. The Climb (Miley) Survivor (Destinys Child) Gold (Spandau Ballet) Beautiful (Christina Aguleira)
  20. Which any young dancer scrutinizing themselves in front of a mirror day in day out would probably find unwelcome. They need as much self confidence as possible.
  21. I am really unpleasantly surprised that the girls are not allowed to use bras, especially nowadays when there is a large range of 'dance underwear' solutions available which are barely perceptible when worn under a leotard.
  22. Split soles all the way ! DS has some by Grishko or SoDança (can't remember now) that also have an elasticated type fabric under the arch so it really hugs the foot and is very flattering. In a rush to go out now, but will post a link later if poss. x
  23. Ribbons, I believe that the summer course is not running this year. x
  24. IBD23....What ENBS wants is not necessarily what Elmhurst is looking for (or RBS, or Northern, or Rambert etc etc....) That's the fact, there is no exact science to this dancing world.....(and then you get to the company auditions.....)phew.... x
