  1. Since you've brought up the subject of Lensky, it struck me retrospectively that, while I'd got the impression of a very smitten young man - love's young dream and all that - I don't think I ever really got the feeling of him being a Romantic Poet from any of the dancers. To my mind, that's an important bit of characterisation, because it underlies all his behaviour in Act II, whether it reflect the way he actually feels or whether it be the way he feels he *ought* to act. And again, retrospectively, I was very disappointed to hear that I had indeed missed Nicol Edmonds dancing Lensky on the last, Friday, matinee. Since I hadn't seen him since the very beginning of the run, it might have swung my decision to go to that performance if anyone had updated the website casting
  2. That reminds me: I was at a concert the other day, and a bloke in front of me kept jerking his head (and probably shoulders too) first to one side, then to the other (or forwards if he wanted to ring the changes occasionally). It wasn't some medical tic or anything he had, just his way of changing his position, I suppose. I'm used to people changing their seating position from time to time, but this was really violent - and really frequent - and every time he did it I'd have to move too if he'd blocked my view - and try not to disturb the people behind *me* too much. It was already a very long piece of music, but it felt a lot longer because I could never settle.
  3. Hmm, you ought to be able to get back to Victoria by 10.50-55 if you're lucky (going via Embankment is only 5 minutes - or should be), but that's still cutting it fine for Brighton, isn't it?
  4. Oh, I was thinking it was new. Oh well, it's still the Grigorovich version, isn't it? Thanks.
  5. I hope so. That and Dances at a Gathering would do very nicely
  6. I believe there's a Bolshoi R&J on this Sunday. Do I want to bother going to that, given the alternative distractions? Does anyone know who's dancing? (BTW, Ann, I moved your queries into this thread for neatness. I thought there was an option to leave a marker pointing people to the new location, but apparently not)
  7. Well, judging by the usual schedule I'm expecting the following to be back: Nutcracker Sleeping Beauty R&J we know about ditto Carmen I'm assuming Winter's Tale (please, with a fully fit first cast!) That probably only leaves scope for one or two more full-length ballets. We don't usually get Manon and Onegin in consecutive years, so I'd rule them out. Possibly Mayerling again? Probably new works from the members of the triumvirate? And someone else who will raise eyebrows.
  8. Well, the summer booking brochure lets slip the fact (owing to a big screen showing in September) that the RB's next season will begin with Romeo & Juliet. More than that, I don't know. When is the season being announced? It surely can't be long now. (And does that mean there's a Ring Cycle for the RO?)
  9. Unfortunately, they're doing precisely the same thing for public booking on the 31st . Since I shan't be at work by then, that means I shall be stuck here at home on a lousy broadband connection trying to book and hoping that the connection doesn't conk out on me. Not impressed
  10. So did I Hover over 'em, and the location appears.
  11. I too was going to suggest that the Gaynor Minden book might be useful. Plus, what does your local library have? Books, DVDs?
  12. I could make a couple of suggestions, but they'd be right at the opposite end of London from you, so I won't bother.
  13. I guess they must think it's easier this way. I was looking for a branch of a restaurant chain close to where I was going out the other night, and a map would have been just what I wanted, rather than a list of all the restaurants, which is what they gave me. I guess you can't please everybody unless you make both options available. How accessible is The Gate from where you are? Alternatively, could you consider one of the repeat showings?
  14. Well, I guess at the very least all the Picturehouses and Odeons are a pretty good bet. Plus the Barbican and maybe the odd Vue (Islington?). Is there a shortage of cinemas where you live?
  15. Well, if anyone as a result has a ticket they no longer want, you know where I am! It's disappointing, but then the same thing happens every year. Better to know now than to turn up on the day and find that people aren't coming

Sarf London being one, I believe. I talked to someone once who told me he came from Forn'on Eaf (Thornton Heath) (can't represent a glottal stop properly on this forum, obviously )
  18. Thanks, John. I think I posted about this maybe a year ago, but then had forgotten all about it!
  19. There wasn't at Wimbledon that I could see. And as I mentioned, the programme sellers I spoke to didn't appear to have any either.
  20. Well, your first paragraph was my reaction entirely. I've normally not much objection to them giving the amphi over to students for one performance - unless it's for a cast I really wanted to see and it's seriously hampering my opportunity to get at the small number of tickets still within my price range - it was just that they chose to do it for the first night which set me wondering. Anyway, as someone else pointed out, at least any teething problems should be out of the way by the time I come to see it, and who knows? If they don't find enough students, presumably they'll open up sales to undesirables like the rest of us.
  21. Do you have any reason to expect that there'll be more than one cast?
  22. Hmm, this sounds like a canny piece of marketing. I wonder whether it says anything about the quality of the finished product?
  23. No, it was definitely something during the evening, because I have a restaurant voucher which runs out tomorrow and I was thinking I could use it tonight. That pretty much rules out the London Ballet Circle, too, since I don't get anything to eat before those. And I'd double-checked February, given that the dates/days are the same as in March, and it wasn't that, either. I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that I must have imagined it, but thanks to everyone for their help anyway
