Goldilocks & the Three Bears is a reimagining of the classic children’s story, telling the tale of a mischievous little girl whose curiosity leads her to a house full of many surprises. 4. TAO Dance Theater 6 and 8 Sadler’s Wells, EC1R 4TN Performances: Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 October at 7.30pm Tickets: £12 - £27 Ticket Office: 020 7863 8000 or www.sadlerswells.com "Mr. Tao has an ability to draw you inside his austere, meditative world; if you go willingly, you realise that the body is a sacred place" New York Times 6 and 8, a double bill of work from TAO Dance Theater, comes to Sadler’s Wells on Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 October 2016 and is the first visiting company as part of the Out of Asia 2season this autumn. Established in 2008 by Beijing-based choreographer Tao Ye, TAO Dance Theater is known for creating work of a mesmeric, trance-like quality. In the “high concept and thrillingly simple” (Evening Standard) 6, six dancers move in dynamic and hypnotising unison, in a shifting landscape of light. The company’s newest piece 8, which will receive its UK premiere at Sadler’s Wells and is the final work of the Straight Line Trilogy, sees eight dancers perform lying instead of standing, restricting their bodies to the floor and limiting their movements to the range of their spines. Tao Ye was previously a New Wave Associate artist of Sadler’s Wells in 2012. He has danced with the Shanghai Army Song & Dance Ensemble, Jin Xing Dance Theatre and Beijing Modern and Contemporary Dance Company. In March 2008 he founded TAO Dance Theater and main works have included: Weight x 3, as well as 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, which have all been presented at Sadler’s Wells. Ye starred in the film Blue Bone in 2012, directed by Cui Jian. In 2013, The Beijing News awarded him the 2013 Innovator Award for Dance, emerging artist by Beijing News again in 2015. This production forms part of the Out of Asia 2 season at Sadler’s Wells. Building on the successes of its first Out of Asia season in 2011, this is another rare opportunity to experience outstanding dance from Asia’s vibrant and rapidly developing performing arts world, which is bringing new perspectives and energy to stages across the globe. This autumn Sadler’s Wells shares with London a range of works by five dance companies from China and Taiwan, as well as four independent choreographers from Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia and India, in a special collaboration with an artist from Singapore. For full details of our Out of Asia 2 season, visit www.sadlerswells.com/outofasia2 Pre-show talk: Inside Asia: The Missing Revolution at 6pm on Tuesday 4 October in the Lilian Baylis Studio at Sadler’s Wells, price £6.50. Speakers include choreographer Tao Ye, Professor Chris Bannerman, artist Choy Ka Fai and Sadler’s Wells Artistic Director Alistair Spalding. 5. Suzie Birchwood A Conversation with Dystonia, in two parts Lilian Baylis Studio, EC1R Wednesday 19 October Performances at 8pm Tickets: £17 Ticket Office: 020 7863 8000 or www.sadlerswells.com Sadler’s Wells continues its commitment to presenting dance by deaf and disabled artists, in the Dance & Dialogue series. For the autumn season, Suzie Birchwood will present A Conversation with Dystonia, in two parts in the Lilian Baylis Studio on Wednesday 19 October 2016. The evening is a dual presentation of movement and words, illuminating distinctive artistic practice. At 16 Suzie won a full scholarship to train at the London Studio Centre, at 17 her dance training was cut short by the onset of generalised dystonia, a neurological movement disorder syndrome. As a result Suzie now uses crutches and a wheelchair. Despite her diagnosis, Suzie continued dancing and has developed techniques that she applies in her teaching and choreography, combining a holistic approach to dance alongside her ballet and contemporary technique, which is demonstrated in A Conversation with Dystonia, in two parts. Dance: For the dance component, Suzie Birchwood presents two pieces. The first is a trio between a classical dancer, an aerial artist and a contemporary dancer, exploring Birchwood’s tempestuous relationship with her condition. The second work plays with notions of support and balance, exploring Suzie’s changing physicality during the cyclical patterns of her condition. Dialogue: The dialogue component sees Birchwood in conversation with her research collaborators, looking at the revolutionary impact of neuroplasticity on her dystonia treatment. By revealing her shifting physicality, Birchwood illustrates that the disorder is a unique and changing aspect of her identity as a dancer. Workshop - Professional Practice with Suzie Birchwood The session will explore aspects of Suzie’s choreography for A Conversation with Dystonia, in two parts. Suzie’s teaching approach encourages each participant to explore their unique kinesiology through creative play, contact improvisation, and response to their surroundings Suitability: For dance practioners and choreographers Notes to Editors: Listings information Suzie Birchwood A Conversation with Dystonia, in two parts Lilian Baylis Studio, EC1R Wednesday 19 October Performances at 8pm Tickets: £17 Ticket Office: 020 7863 8000 or www.sadlerswells.com Professional Practice with Suzie Birchwood Wednesday 19 October, 3.30pm - 5.30pm Age guidance 18+ £12 or £6 concessions (Access members, students and over 60s) Ticket Offer: If you also buy a ticket to see the performance you can purchase the workshop for the concession rate of £6 ABOUT SADLER’S WELLS Sadler's Wells is a world-leading dance house, committed to producing, commissioning and presenting new works and to bringing the best international and UK dance to London and worldwide audiences. 14. UK PREMIERE Matthias Sperling Now That We Know Lilian Baylis Studio, Sadler’s Wells, EC1R 4TN Thursday 29 September 2016 Performance: 8pm Tickets: £15 Ticket Office: 020 7863 8000 or www.sadlerswells.com London based, Canadian born choreographer and performer Matthias Sperling makes his Sadler’s Wells choreographic debut with the UK Premiere of Now That We Know, a performance lecture, in the Lilian Baylis Studio on Thursday 29 September. Now That We Know continues Sperling’s investigation into the relationship between mind and body and explores a hypothetical future in which science has discovered precisely how our bodies give rise to our minds, and considers how dance and choreography could be expanded by this new understanding. This work of science fiction builds on recent findings, taking a choreographic perspective to freely imagine plausible, absurd, thrilling or worrying scenarios. Sperling’s artistic research is invested in close interactions with both contemporary visual arts and the brain sciences, and seeks to explore how changes in our conceptions of what we are affect what we can do. Reflecting this back into his choreographic research, Sperling explores how changes in the cultural understanding of the limits and capacities of a body can expand the limits and capacities of choreography. Born in Toronto in 1974, Sperling studied with the Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre and went on to study philosophy at university in Canada before coming to the UK to complete his dance training with Transitions Dance Company at Laban. He went on to dance with UK companies including Sadler’s Wells Associate Artists and Resident Companies, Wayne McGregor’s Random Dance and Matthew Bourne’s Adventures In Motion Pictures, before pursuing his own choreographic work. His works include performances in theatres, galleries and museums and include video works and exchanges that take place in public spaces and online. His work has been presented at leading arts venues and dance festivals including, Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Southbank Centre, Royal Opera House, Dance Umbrella, Nottdance and Springdance (NL). Sperling often collaborates with leading dance and visual artists, including Siobhan Davies, together with whom he created and presented works at galleries including the ICA, Whitechapel, Hayward, Tramway and Turner Contemporary. He has also worked with Pablo Bronstein, Carlos Motta and Hetain Patel, and composers including Scanner and George Benjamin. Sadler’s Wells is an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation and currently receives approximately 10% of its revenue from Arts Council England. ABOUT MATTHIAS SPERLING Matthias Sperling was an Associate Artist with Dance4 (2007-2015) and is the winner of a Bonnie Bird New Choreography Award (2008). Sperling was part of Independent Dance’s Solo Performance Commissioning Project with American choreographer Deborah Hay in 2012, where he created and performed an adaptation of Hay’s choreographic score Dynamic, a choreographer who has hugely influenced Sperling’s practice. More recently, he took part in the first cohort of Sadler’s Wells Summer University 2010 - 2014, and was asked by Sadler’s Wells to partake in a series of talks called We need to talk where new names in dance and performance were asked to invite leading creative voices to join them in conversation about why dance matters today and how it relates to an expanding creative field. Sperling has been part of a collaborative research project with cognitive neuroscientist Guido Orgs (Goldsmiths University) and social psychologist Daniel Richardson (UCL) investigating moving together in groups. Combining choreographic practice and scientific methods, they studied what it means to move in synchrony, how it affects those who do it (performers) and those who watch it (perceivers). As part of this research, Sperling created ‘Group Study’, a choreographic score for 10 performers. Performances of the score are both artistic events and scientific experiments, in which physiological responses are measured via wristwatch-like sensors worn by the performers and audience members. Audience members are also asked to report their experience while watching, using a custom made app on a tablet computer. Before and after the performance/experiment, audience members are asked to complete short questionnaires. The research is part of an 18-month study, funded by a £250,000 grant from the Economic and Social Research Council.
