Fusster
MY DD has a new Lyrical dance that she will perform in up coming festivals. Unfortunately one of the festivals does not have a Lyrical category for her age group. Is it acceptable to enter her Lyrical dance under the Modern category? Anna C
Fusster, I've moved your thread here into "Doing Dance".
drdance
Yes most people enter it under modern if there's no separate lyrical section.
Lifeafterballet?
There are lyrical style dances in DD modern sections - however if the dancers have a modern they obviously cannot enter both dances in the same section.
Billyelliott
Yes agree modern if there's no lyrical catagory....at least that what we did !
Loulabelle
Yes absolutely fine to do Lyrical Modern in a Modern section where the two are not seperated. My DD will be doing exactly that in a couple of weeks time.
DancingDays
My DD always has a dilemma if there's no separate Lyrical section because she loves both her Modern and her Lyrical solos but in answer to your question you can definitely do Lyrical in the Modern section. Karen
Festivals will usually allow you to enter the nearest age group if there is not a specific age category for your dd, e.g if she's an under 10, you could enter u12.
sarahw
People have done 2 dances - lyrical and modern in modern sections I've seen.
JulieW
That's interesting Sarah as the festivals we've done won't let you do more than one solo on a section. It annoys me that regional finals don't have a separate lyrical section so you have to choose between your modern and lyrical dance if you've qualified both. I know lyrical is a style of modern but critical sections can be huge, and very difficult to judge against other modern styles imho.
Pups_mum
The advice that my DD's teacher gives her students is that if there is a lyrical section then they should do their lyrical in that, and something different in the modern section, but if there is no lyrical section then they can choose whether to do their lyrical or their other modern in the modern section. None of the festivals DD has ever done allow anyone to dance more than once in a section sothey do have to choose. DD generally picks her lyrical if she has to choose, as she prefers that style. That said, her current modern is quite slow and I can't really tell why it's not lyrical, but DD assures me that it's different!
sarahw
We are in North west so maybe unique to area?
sarahw
Have just realised one of the festivals I had in mind now has an alternative modern section so people double up acro and lyrical. ..
Fusster
Thank you everyone for your advise. DD was getting a bit worried thinking we were doing something we shouldn't be doing! I can now put her mind at rest and let her know that the balletCo collective say it's OK
2littledancers
It was only last year that the section s at a couple of our festivals were separated , up until then I'd never heard of it . I think it's something that is definitely filtering through but I suppose the reason why most say only one dance to be danced when they are not separated is that according to All England , they are not separate sections , they are the same disapline . balletdogs
hi yes if not a separate lyrical section it goes under modern but have to agree with Julie W, it is frustrating that Lyrical isn't included as a separate section in the regionals - why is that.....
