Phew! that’s the end of that challenging week, tonight’s (Thursday) class, we spent a lot of time in the centre doing long sequences and was really stretching my memory to hold all the steps inside it. But it was fun though.

Wednesday was similar as we have added more to our show sequence, some aspects are a little hazy at the moment but we have plenty of repetitions to go as several of the girls were off this week, I was off last week at a performance so we are all catching up with each other. I think what may be come a little challenging for me and one other girls is this aspect of our show sequence:

There will be 10 of us on the stage in two formations of 5 (spaced like the face of a dice) on opposite sides of the stage. The sequence as far as we have got at the moment after dancing the main part of the routine, girls will run to opposite corners of the stage after doing two balance’s and soutenue turn, when one pair depart, the next pair start on their balance’s, I’m in the last pair. While we are waiting we are stood on one leg with the other at the front in attitude, I do hope I don’t get the wobbles, bearing in mind I have six performances of these to do. I didn’t get chance to try this out as we only went as far as the first two pairs departing. We were due to start the Easter break on the 27th, however we have the theatre that day for an additional rehearsal. It was to have been my next trip to my ROH class, which is as well, as I’m in London on the Saturday for the Swan Lake workshop at Sadler’s Wells.

Hi Fiz

I do hope you have a better week next week, I can’t imagine what its like to go a whole week without ballet now, it’s become such a large part of my life with up to 3 classes on some days, it’s almost like a new non-paying career. Fortunately I’m in very good health but at the same time I would not go to class if there was a risk of infecting others. However on the rear occasions when the sun comes out, I get reminded spring is on the way and it will soon have to make time for my garden, half an acre of lawn, trees and vegetable patch with 400ft of river frontage to look after. I really don’t know how I’m going to fit it all in.  I got a wake-up call last weekend when I had to spring clean the house before a friend came to stay for the “MOVE IT” weekend, it was nice to get everywhere tidy again but it was hard going between classes and my workouts.

I’ve just come from a Salsa party tonight (Saturday), I have asked Deborah the lady that organises our parties, if I can do a mini-performance at one of the intervals, she has agreed. The first will be full costume ballet danced to the Titanic theme using my own choreography. I’m not ready as yet as it’s only partly done. Kat my Lincoln teacher is going to record a video of my performance so far on Monday night after ballet class with the mirror behind me. I guess I will be far more critical of my performance than Kat, but it’s essential I make a proper job of things before performing at one of our dance parties, especially as their are bound to be a few that have no interest in ballet, and I just hope they don’t voice their disapproval. If it goes well it may become a regular performance for me, even though its a captive audience

Well who said you don’t get that Monday morning feeling when you have finished work, I really could have stayed in bed this morning after a heavy Salsa party weekend. Had to do a warm-up workout prior to my 10.30AM Body balance class, that gave me a rude wake-up call from yesterday’s (Sunday) Awesome Abs class, they really did ache after I got started. The body balance class was fine as most of it was stretching from a combination of Tai Chi and Pilates. A lot of it contained stretching with the hand holding the foot with the foot flexed, for me that was a lost opportunity, so I held my leg near the ankle, that way the foot could have an extreme stretch and remain pointed, my teacher didn’t complain and I was closest to her in class. We did some form of exercise with the arms, I guess it was derived from martial arts; needless to say I softened it as close to port de bras as I dare, which made it looked far more elegant and covered the same range of movement. Whist I thoroughly enjoyed the class, it was not a patch on the old stretch and tone class I did with one of my old ballet teachers at Sleaford.

Went to my Lincoln ballet class tonight, it was fantastic, all this terms regular girls were present (5 of us), most of the time was spent on our little sequence, and some more added this week. One more week to go and it will be completed, then a whole new sequence to learn with bits added week by week. It was a real fun class.

Unfortunately we ran over on time, also our teacher had not put the track on her IPod that I need to dance my bit of Choreography against the Titanic theme, so that’s next week now before I get it videoed. I know I’m going to hate what I first see, but that’s the psychological cost of getting it right.

Thank you, 2dancers. Unfortunately this is not going to be so easily resolved. I will not say why on this topic but have started a new one "Family Matters" in the Not Dance section. I think I will go to class this week. I need it to keep me sane :)

That’s the end of another Ballet week, I think we have been through the whole of our show sequence now, I don’t think any of us can remember it fully yet. I’m going to document is as far as I am able from my own notes and memory. Katy our teacher is going to go through it and fill the gaps in, so it’s complete and understandable. Then she will take it and hand it to the rest of the girls, as she does not have the time to generate it her self, needless to say I did ask about videoing it again and the position hasn’t changed, which would have been far more efficient.

Our local class has a new recruit; a young lady in her early 30’s, she has done ballet before in her younger days. It needs new dancers for it to survive as we have had a lot of absenteeism this term. I went to this class this morning and I think I put my foot in it again with my teacher; I must stop correcting her and keep my enthusiasm in check, even though it was only once this time.

Another good class from Peterborough tonight, it’s amazing how much we crammed in and it was still very enjoyable. Even better, next week when lots of class start their Easter break from Wednesday, Peterborough will remain open for Adult Ballet on Thursday.

My Wednesday class at the Theatre is also open by special arrangement for our rehearsals as several of the girls have absent during the early rehearsals. So it now looks like I’m back to a full week running up to Easter, and as a bonus, I’m doing a Swan Lake workshop at Sadler’s Wells on the Saturday to finish off the week.

Not a good week this week, it been hard going. Lincoln class was down to 4 again but it was quite enjoyable and we have managed to finish our sequence that’s been added too every week. New sequence next term.  I arrived early as I always do, but no previous class and the studio door open. That gave me the opportunity to get my teacher to load up the music for my own choreographed sequence to the Titanic theme. I got one of the other students to video it for me with the mirror behind me. My teacher was quite complementary, I have only just played it back, and it is as bad as I thought it would be, but I haven’t given up ballet, at least not yet. I have an awful lot of stuff to work on, but that was the quality of feedback I needed. Also the orientation of some of the sequence needs changing too, I think that was a bit of a distraction at the time as I was trying to do it on the fly. As I only have a small studio at home, I think I must modularise the sequence to preserve the orientation to the audience, then it can be fully scaled for an intended performance or practice on a full size dance floor without too much bother of over-riding existing muscle memory.  Another contributing factor, I was stone cold with no warm-up, but it was an opportunity, and I have learnt a lot. I guess wide angled video recording in my own studio is the next thing on the wish list.

Wednesdays Rehearsal at the theatre was hard going without the use of video, I’ve documented about 40% of the sequence, but it now need changes as things keep changing a bit. I can see why my teacher didn’t formally document it, as it takes ages. She has a hard copy to check but I need to update this one first with correction then add some more from my own scribblings from last night. One of the girls last night started to record a commentary into her mobile phone, so you can imagine what that did for any port de bras, but it still it gave her something to work with. This really is a muddled way of going on and is quite alien to the way I work; needless to say I really don’t like it.

This morning’s local class was very thin, only two of us. My balance was rubbish too, the hall was extremely cold, the other dancer left her scarf and gloves on all the way through class, and there I was in my leo and tights  bruuuuuur . My only worry is, can this class survive as its been thin all this term.

Another good class at Peterborough tonight, 4 dancers + another ballet teacher joined us for the session, the place was deserted especially as the Children had already broken up, and normally it’s full of them and their mums. Almost finished now just got Saturday at Sadler’s Wells to go for the Swan Lake workshop, then I have a break for a few days, by about Wednesday I will be bored and need my ballet fix, Oh well!

Hi Tabitha

Thank you for the info, it is a bit further than I would normally want to travel as its about 60miles from me, but I will be travelling down to London once a week anyway and that’s over 100, and twice a week once a month, but its mainly rail. Most of my classes are between 20 and 40 miles from home so you can imagine how much I’m spending on fuel. I’m reluctant to take on another class at the moment as from April I’m up to 9 classes a week. I still need to leave time for my fitness classes which I have 4 of and my own early morning workouts too. However I do like the fact it’s in the daytime. Do you know if they allow drop in dancers to pop in on an irregular basis, in my case if its raining as I somehow have to fit in my half acre of garden and lawns around my home. Strange as it may seem normally Friday to Sunday is reserved for social dancing, Salsa and those dances that go along with it.

I don't dance myself and know nothing about these classes, but Benoit has taught my DD before and he is lovely and well qualified. I have cut and paste his biog below:

Benoit Egloff studied at the École de Danse de l' Opéra de Paris & at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Danse de Paris before joining the Junior Ballet de Paris. In 1998 , aged 19, he joined Les Grands Ballet Canadiens de Montréal & in 2001 Ballet Basel as a soloist. He teaches for a number of schools & companies around the UK, including the prestigious Dance Partnership and Access Scheme run by the Royal Ballet School and the CAT (Centre for Advanced Training) scheme.  Benoit is a director of Ampersandance Company, based in Nottingham.

Maybe you could get the train from Grantham to Nottingham? It's about the same journey time as by car; about half an hour.

Hi Tabitha

Unfortunately you didn’t answer my question regarding the possibility of access as a drop in dancer, that’s the way I operate with the Royal Opera House as I generally only go there once a month for their two classes, but that is curtailed at the moment as it conflicts with rehearsals for our show at the Angles Theatre which will be running all week in July.

I may check him out, but it's not about his qualifications and performing experience which may be impressive, it's about “can he teach and transfer that knowledge”, “is he available after class for feedback discussion and help with various moves”, “Is he honest about areas of ballet which may no longer be familiar to him” and finally “will he permit videoing of his demonstrations where no other student is involved”.

Mondays may be doable, however I will have to sacrifice one of my body balance classes and Friday is out completely as I have other commitments. The train from Grantham doesn’t help very much, but it may be available from Spalding which is even better. Whatever, there will be plenty of time for me to get to my Lincoln class as it doesn’t start until 8pm.

Hi Tabitha

I googled the location of the school, its well to the North of Nottingham and well away from the train station, I think all in all it’s a non starter. Travel by road would be the only sensible solution and I would need an exceptionally good reason to bring this one in. Next year I will be thinking of changing the emphasis from general adult ballet tuition to selective private tuition, I already have one private session, that’s well focussed on my requirements and I’m well satisfied with it. I googled the location of the school, its well to the North of Nottingham and well away from the train station, I think all in all it’s a non starter. Thank goodness that this week is over with no Ballet classes, about half are back next week with the BRB workshop on Tuesday to look forward too.

I did get to go to one of my old salsa groups on Wednesday evening, lots of new faces, I did enjoy that. Tonight’s (Friday) Salsa session turned out to be a bit of a damp quid, The new routines and dancing was fantastic as usual, but our host confirmed the date of the Skegness Festival, where we are to perform on stage, that date clashes with one of my ballet school show's at the Angles theatre, were we have two performance to do that day. That news really saddened me, as there is no way I can attend Skegness. I the summer we put on Salsa performances at a lots of town and country events, its fun, it helps promote our group and bring in new blood to keep an active and vibrant core of dancers.

Anyone here do classes in Essex or London? I take class in Essex but I'm also seeking more classes to attend in either Essex or London.

http://www.chelsea-ballet.com/

Chelsea Ballet is a group of amateur dancers, of varying abilities, that meets once a week to rehearse for a number of major productions per year and a programme of smaller scale shows performed at residential homes and hospitals.

Chelsea Ballet also organises a monthly Masterclass, they do a summer school too at Pineapple, see my threads on the forum.

Adult morning classes in ballet and pilates.I have no further details

http://www.everybodyballet.com/?page_id=4

Royal Opera House wednesday evening for Adult Beginners and Intermediate, expensive at £25.00 per class but about half a dozen of us do both. There are other ballet classes run at the ROH as I have often been asked which one, as my name is on the list at the stage door, otherwise you cannot get in.

http://www.ballet.org.uk/classes/spring-term/

English National Ballet have classes from level 1 Beginners to Level 4 Advanced but thet are well sort after, you have to get in early once it hits the website.

http://www.city-academy.com/ballet-classes

City Academy, levels only up to improver 2 whatever that means, but they do run workshops and summer schools.

Hope that helps
