  1. I reccommend Bloch, their fitting service is great and they have loads of different styles. My dd also has wide feet and has found several styles which suit her over the years including the European Balance. She likes the Synthesis just now. Dancia has lots of brands but as mentioned already I'm not convinced their fitting service is always good, my dd didnt find anything there to suit her and has never found the Russian brands work for her feet. I have no recent experience of Capezio or Freed but what works for one may or may not work for another.
  2. Yes, this is still the case sometimes.
  3. I can confirm that they are currently still taught by Anna Du Boisson, who is still head of WLSD, it is a really good school.
  4. I can reccommend YDA, I know the accommodation situation can make it tricky for some applicants, but there are options. Its worth looking into as the ballet is a high level, students go on to excellent upper schools and academics are great as well. Happy to answer any questions.
  5. Hi, does anyone have any experience of the ENB Youth summer intensive? (Not the school intensive.... this one is held at the company studios in EAst London.) DD is looking at it but Ive not heard of it before. I'd be interested to know what the level of ballet is and how much ballet or contemporary they do? Shes looking at the advanced level not junior.
  6. This is absolutely true. Inappropriate stretching can be detrimental to young bodies, usually this means overstretching especially round the hip areas. Theres lots of info on this and teachers/ballet physios should be able to advise. I speak as a ballet teacher. I would also add that teenage bodies are so troublesome when they belong to dancers! Bodies are growing and through puberty, they are all over the place, stiffening up in place, one leg longer than the other, it seems like no improvements are being made. I had a similar situation with my DD, but she has almost finished growng now and is well through the worst and everything is a lot better. Her flexibility is improving, balance has improved and strength is steadily building. From seeing this in her I would say, be patient, keep going with the stretching and technique but dont be disheartened if progress is slow. Of course this may not affect all young dancers, some might grow more 'evenly', but my dd plateaued for a time and now has really been able to improve all those things.
  7. That sounds good, they've evidently extended the programme. I hope your dd's both enjoy their time there.
  8. My dd did this for a year, she said the classes were around 12-15, level was appropriate for vocational year 9 as she was then, there are no performance opportunities. She did say the class was very slow, with a lot of talking, it was basically a 2 hour ballet class, they did a little conditioning but not much and not every week. She did enjoy being there in the studios, so a nice experience.
  9. Thank you both, thats good to know.
  10. Does anyone happen to know/have experience of SI waiting lists in terms of; how long they stay open and whether there is still movement through June? DD is on a few and we are starting to wonder whether to start making other arrangements or hold on a bit longer.
  11. I think it probably depends on the school, some will be more flexible than others.
  12. https://media.royalacademyofdance.org/media/2021/05/28090816/2021-Specifications-20210527.pdf listed in the specifications for exams
  13. Last year my dd's group performed a short section of class work (all the groups did different bits) and then the repertoire they had learnt. Its a lovely presentation but not a serious performance, I cant imagine that her week will be affected at all.
  14. Stretching is a slow and steady accomplishment, it should be balanced with strength gained and not forced or pushed too quickly.... thats when damage can occur. Each body is different and will work at a different pace, puberty also plays a part. It is always possible to improve though and children will just get there at different stages, frustrating as that might be. I would also try to see a ballet physio (be sure it is one who knows young dancers bodies) for some specific advice as this can be invaluable. My own dd took ages to gain flexibility, she was not blessed with natural facility, but she grew a lot around 12 and then suddenly gained flexibility rather more quickly; she also had guidance from a ballet physio. Now, a few years later, she is still working for her desired flexibility, but it is improving all the time, slowly but surely. She was also told early on that her lack of turnout would hold her back..... well now she is completely flat.... you just never know when they are young.
  15. It depends on the school, some vocational students do continue their RBS associates.
  16. yes, got one and still on it...apparently no movement yet?
  17. for anyone on the waiting list for this year, I understand we will get updates this week; I'd be interested to know if theres any movement.
  18. Mark Bruce Dance Copany, Phoenix Dance Company, also researching specific choreographers like Akram khan, Javier de Frutos etc as they often have individual projects and companies. there used to be a lot of small scale companies around which we heard about from going to class, The Stage news, noticeboards at The Place, Greenwich Dance Agency etc (which doesnt exist anymore I think). Look at theatres like Sadlers Wells and more local thetares for small scale performances. Also consider a one year final course which is performance based (or maybe already done this)
  19. Shes already doing Central (BB is same week) its for the other weeks. Thanks though.
  20. I've actually looked and cant find any in Berlin, the only German one I found is at the John Cranko school which is in May/June.
  21. Its so hard being on a waiting list isnt it, my dd was on 3 last year and we had the same worries. She got into Yorkshire and ENB in the end which was a massive relief! This year unfortunately again, waiting list for 3! I am probably going to just wait and hope, though I think theres less chance this time round.... theres not many alternative options for her for those weeks, I'd be interested to know if you have found some good alternatives still taking applications though? As we are in London, our back up is currently lots of classes at Pineapple/Danceworks.
