  1. We had smooth sailing with the Ailey program that premiered last night. Thank you, Lincoln Center! Streams premiering today from the US include Kochetkova at the Joyce Theatre, San Francisco Ballet with “Director’s Choice” of brief works by Wheeldon & Tomasson, and - for a donation - Pacific NW Ballet In Tharp s Waiting at the Station. All continue beyond the premiere for several days.
  2. The Ailey program’s “spot” is up on YouTube! “Premieres in four hours.” https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UCsv5QlFo2Q
  3. Shall we give the Lincoln Center at Home series another chance? ”There is trouble all over this world” - the opening words in Alvin Ailey’s Revelations, a work that closes tonight’s scheduled stream of four works in a Quadruple Bill, beginning 8pm est. If it shows up on YouTube, it should be here: https://m.youtube.com/user/LincolnCenterVideos/videos info on the program: http://lincolncenter.org/lincoln-center-at-home/show/alvin-ailey-american-dance-theater-chroma-grace-takademe-revelations-173 They wouldn’t dare cancel/postpone this one too, would they?
  4. Thanks, Bruce. Actually, I Beta-recorded the whole show in Dec ‘83 (since transferred to DVD)...so I was reporting for others. And it appears that Lincoln Center has removed its website’s reference to the entire show...so not sure what’s cooking. Blackout Wednesday? Still, good to see your links to the individual ballets. This whole Lincoln Center “Dance Week” has been bizarre. It began swimmingly on Saturday with a glorious direct-Youtube-link Midsummer, followed by odd situations. Sigh.
  5. It’s an oldie goldie! ABT at its finest. As discussed in another threat, it’s a shame that the Lincoln Center organization chose to not allow a direct search on YouTube...so cannot be accessed on our Smart TVs for optimal viewing. NYCB’s Midsummer Dream was instantly accessible. Let’s see what they’re planning to do with tonight’s 1983 Balanchine Celebration.
  6. They haven’t posted it yet. That makes me a bit nervous that they may try to make it difficult to access on purpose (union rules or whatever?)...and we may have to sweat as we did on Sunday night, waiting for special accessing instructions on the ABT-1978 show...or that we may be zinged with a last-minute postponement, as with the SAB Workshop Show on Monday. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that tonight’s scheduled show will happen. 🥴
  7. The same JoyceStream link takes you to a delightful 36-minute documentary that follows students of the Royal Danish Ballet school, When I Dance. Included are scenes of the current RDB Nutcracker (staged by Hubbe) and a gorgeous segment of my favorite RDB ballerina, Ida Pretorius, rehearsing Odette. The Kochetkova program begins on Friday; in the meantime, enjoy this lovely Danish program with English subtitles.
  8. Reminder that Lincoln Center resumes its regularly-scheduled Dance Week offerings with today’s Balanchine Tribute program from Dec 1983 (Mozartiana with Farrell!, Who Cares? and Vienna Waltzes); then Alvin Ailey mixed Bill tomorrow...assuming no further changes....and we yet don’t know if there will be any barriers/ requirements to access, as with Sunday’s ABT 1978 show. https://m.youtube.com/user/LincolnCenterVideos/videos Yesterday’s Coppelia postponed to Saturday night, as reported earlier.
  9. Maria Kochetkova’s 2019 Show to be streamed by the Joyce Theatre.. https://www.joyce.org/engage/joycestream
  10. While I agree that it’s mainly movement, The Cellist is a compelling piece of theatre and music. I loved the filming and how it captured the main characters’ interactions with family, colleagues, etc. Timing was perfect too - neither too long nor too short.
  11. Right. The current ENB Spanish Dance has many elements of the Russian/Mariinsky-then-Kirov tradition. The more that we examine it, the less Ashton we see. In general, the current bonanza of streams has not been too kind to Ashton...we’ve gotten one Fille Mal Gardee early on and the bits in this ENB Lake.
  12. The Russian Fille Mal Gardee version that I’m really hoping will be streamed is Vikharev’s reconstruction of the Petipa edition, at the Ural Ballet company of Ekaterinburg!
  13. Just saw that, Bruce. Now wondering if the rest of Lincoln Center’s Dance Week offerings will be similarly deferred?
  14. It’s the SAB’s (School of Am Ballet) own Youtube channel - not Lincoln Center’s - for today’s “SAB Celebration” program to include Scotch Symphony, InCreases, Agon pdd and Circus Polka. Premieres at 7pm Eastern. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeIUVH2dyFtZv0PAR2WTvLQ
  15. BalletMet (Columbus, OH, USA) in Ulysses Dove’s Red Angels, originally choreographed for the NYCB. Staged by BalletMet’s A.D. and former NYCB soloist Edwaard Liang. https://www.balletmet.org/virtual-performances/
  16. I saw this production at the Kennedy Center in June 2011, shortly after it premiered. Grinder and Kupinsky starred. I remember that Miss Birthe (Alba Nadal) has a newly-created solo in the midst of Bournonville’s famous Pas de Sept in the last act. Most unfortunate. About the best thing that night was Lis Jeppesen as one of the two troll brothers, Viderick. Too bad that she isn’t in this latest film. I remember Queen Margrethe attending that Washington, DC premiere in 2011; I kept wondering what she was thinking about the garish new designs, as she watched? She had designed the beautiful old early-1990s production. Sigh.
  17. NYCB’s last offering of its present digital season - Contemporary Mix - premiered last night. Uh... Maybe they should have ended with Donizetti Variations and declared victory? Oh well, we’re grateful for the season, overall. 😇
  18. NYCB in Balanchine’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream tonight, 8PM Eastern, as part of Lincoln Center at Home’s Dance Week: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5stUbrIlkm5UTMPgVm2dsg A true gem from May 1986.
  19. Update: Miami City Ballet. Tonight’s stream of Firebird is up on YouTube now. Unsure for how long.
  20. Thoroughly enjoyed Marston’s Snowblind. This choreographer is a story teller above all. Great cast: Birkkjaer, Van Patten, Froustey and ensemble. A 30-minute work that packs a punch.
  21. That’s what I thought, James. This current ENB version, for all of its beauty, doesn’t show the corps parts of Ashton’s A4. I just compared DVDs of the 1980 Royal, the late 80s LFB (now ENB) and rewatched the current ENB. Not only do the swans not perform the swaying movements in the current version but practically the entire Dance of Little Swans that opens the act is different. The only Ashton maintained in ENB’s current version of A4 is the movement of the principals, it seems. On the other hand the A1 Waltz (Pas de douze) and A3 Neapolitan Dance are Ashton’s.
  22. I just experienced The Cellist. What an extraordinary piece of theatre! So touching. Beautiful performances by Lauren Cuthbertson (cellist ), Marcellino Sambe (cello) and Matthew Ball (husband). The life of DuPre encapsulated in one hour. I found it to be an overall more effective and fulfilling piece by Cathy Marston than the evening/l-o-n-g Jane Eyre at ABT last year. In this new piece, the pantomime/modern movement is so effective that it blends seamlessly with the few truly balletic moments...and what a grand moment is that final extended pdd of the dying cellist and her cello! p.s. Has Cuthbertson ever looked lovelier? Not just her movement...blonde becomes her.
  23. True. By the way, I notice changes between the current ENB “Ashton A4” and that in the Royal’s film ca 1980 (starring Makarova/Dowell). For ex, ENB 2018 corps doesn’t perform the lovely swaying back and forth, backs to audience, with high port de bras, during the mournful oboe-led tune.”Ashton simplified.”
  24. Reminder- Miami City Ballet in Balanchine’s Firebird at 8pm est. Only via their Facebook page? Hopefully also on YouTube, so that we all can watch on our Smart TVs. https://www.facebook.com/miamicityballet/ I call today “Super Friday” because there’s so much ballet streaming premiering: NYCB contemporary mix, Cathy Marston Double-Header (Royal & SanFco), Miami Firebird. Then the Lincoln Center at Home streaming Dance Week. Arizona in Symphony in Three Mvts only on Sunday. First we need to make it through “Super Friday”!
