  1. Joseph Aumeer is an absolutely outstanding dancer with an incredibly winning stage presence. Most ballet companies in the world would want to have him - except that this isn't the best time of year for job-hunting. I agree with tabitha: do go see him (and others) dance on the 19th July. Also, people on here might be interested in the Dance Europe interview with him (July edition) about his first working year. The RB's Giacomo Rovero is also featured there.
  2. I have known much of the music for years but last week's rehearsal at the ROH was my first experience of this opera as a whole. I mustn't comment on the 'performance' as the first night was yet to come, but I was shocked at how dated I found the production to be and how distastefully racist is seemed, especially the names and antics given to Ping, Pang and Pong.
  3. I really enjoyed today's RBS matinee at the ROH. The programme was as follows (details in my posts above): Les Sylphides; Here We Come; Onwards; Swan Lake Pas de Quatre; Echad Mi Yodea; The Conservatoire; Solo; See Blue Through; Concerto AND ..... THE DEFILE featuring all the school's students. There was some delightful talent on display with Sae Maeda, Daichi Ikarashi, James Large, Yu Kurihara, Amelia Townsend, Harrison Lee, Ginevra Zambon, Davi Ramos, Brayden Gallucci, Jerome Barnes, Yu Hang, and Nicholas Landon among those who particularly caught my eye. [I think that about half of these wonderful young people are, or were, White Lodgers while the other half were probably recruited at Upper School level.] In general, I liked the professional feel afforded by the scenery (even though the chandelier in the Bournonville had been hung up seemingly still wrapped for transit). However, even though many items had been sponsored, I found myself questioning the obviously high expenditure for a school on Wayne McGregor-style hanging shapes for the See Blue Through number. On such occasions, one hears many comments from parents which reveal just how much each student's family has been committed to helping them succeed and the huge sacrifices made over many years. So congratulations to them as well as to their talented sons and daughters.
  4. Unfortunately, it appears not. OVER THE MOON FOR ALL THE PROMOTEES. CONGRATULATIONS!
  5. Of course we know this FLOSS!!!!!! Please would you be so kind as to give us the dansomanie link? My French is not bad but I can't for the life of me navigate that website.
  6. Yes, there was announcement a while ago that he was joining the staff of the Royal Ballet School.
  7. So pleased for Claire and such a huge "well done" to Ryo. What happened? Was Thiago injured?
  8. An explanation seems to have been added to the listing as follows: "No recruitment for Joseph Aumeer but his first place should leave him all chances next season after only one year as a supernumerary and without going through the School of Dance." [Google translation!] It's obviously a long, hard road in Paris if a dancer hasn't trained there.
  9. Here are more results from the Concours de Recruitment: http://www.dansesaveclaplume.com/a-la-barre/431254-concours-de-recrutement-externe-2017-du-ballet-de-lopera-de-paris-les-resultats/ Two external girls have been engaged but, although Joseph Aumeer (ex RBS student who had a temporary contract with POB this year) came first among the men, he does not seem to have got a contract - yet. I have to confess that I cannot fathom the POB system at all. These competitions are held very late in the year when other opportunities have come and gone. Some of the entrants have danced in most of the productions throughout the preceding season but are still left hanging in the air. At least with the RB's Aud Jebsen scheme, apprentices know where they stand around January each year and can look elsewhere.
  10. Agreed. Dancers' discussions with their AD range, I am sure, across a whole range of aspects of their performance (not only on the stage), upcoming repertoire/roles, aspirations, areas for improvement etc. Promotion news is one aspect of this essentially private exchange. Along with everyone else, I am bursting to know which RB dancers have been promoted but it seems that we'll just have to wait a bit longer.
  11. I believe that there are companies where dancers are taken on 'on probation' for a few months at a time and need to prove themselves before they are given a full contract.
  12. I too hope that Brandon Lawrence continues to develop and to prosper in terms of rank. BRB's upper male echelons are looking a bit empty without him. I am surprised that neither Yaoquin Shang nor Lachlan Monaghan have been promoted but I have to confess that I am not as well acquainted with the world of BRB as I am with the RB and ENB.
  13. ........and, I believe, the daughter of Didy Veldman who choreographed a duet for two second year Upper School students.
  14. Juan danced his last show as the Pasha's Assistant in Le Corsaire in Poland in early May.
  15. Not disagreeing but don't lose sight of the fact that the RB already has a number of other young dancers eagerly waiting in the Des Grieux queue.
  16. The programmes focusing mainly on White Students included: Let's Begin (White Lodge Staff); Giselle Act 1 - Waltz, Pas de Six and Finale (Petipa/Wright); Russian Souvenir (Tania Fairbairn); Vivace (Tania Fairbairn); Onwards (Jonathan Watkins) - danced by 1st Year Upper School; Alma Serena (Sherril Wexter); The 31st Reel (Donna Philips); The Conservatory (Bournonville); La Sylphide - Reel (Bournonville); Solo (Van Manen) - danced by 3rd Year Upper School; 360 Degrees (Skya Powney, Winner of the Ninette de Valois Choreographic Award) - Friday evening only; Serrated (Anna Daly, NdeVCA finalist) - Saturday matinee only; Fajjar (Rebecca Blenkinsop, Winner of the Ursula Moreton Choreographic Award); Here we Come (Erik Bruhn) It was a delightful programme and it was lovely, as usual, to see all the very young talent on stage and to be able to spot dancers who had impressed in earlier years and, indeed, on the ROH stage in Nutcracker. Incidentally - and I have seen only two performances - all the 2nd Year Upper School Girls seem to have had an opportunity to perform in various pieces, some more than once.
  17. Yes, but the strapline for the front page photo misleading reads: "Xander Parish will make a triumphant return to the Royal Ballet as the lead in Swan Lake". The article covers familiar ground but it is lovely that Xander is getting this well-deserved coverage.
  18. The RBS programme last night was, as RuthE says above, mainly danced by Upper School students. The running order was Les Sylphides (Fokine), Here We Come (Erik Bruhn) danced by White Lodge boys; Swan Lake pas de Quatre (Ashton), Echad Mi Yodea (KYR,1990) (Chad Naharin), Onwards (jonanthan Watkins), Solo (Hans van Maanan), See Blue Through (Didy Veldman), and Concerto (MacMillan). The Director (Christopher Powney) says, as he usually does, that the programme "is crafted to demonstrate the students' high level of training". It certainly displayed some stand out talent - for me particularly Sae Maeda (in Les Sylphides), Daichi Ikarashi and James Large (in the Bruhn), Davi Ramos and Ginevra Gambon (in the Watkins), Harrison Lee (in Swan Lake and Concerto), Yu Kunhara and Yu Hang (in Concerto), and Katharina Nikelski (in the Veldman). Huge congratulations to them and to all the students who have clearly worked so hard. However, I didn't feel that the choice of repertoire quite hit the spot this year. For me there wasn't the usual balance among the pieces, some felt over-long and, unfortunately, I didn't experience quite my usual sense of sheer joy as a spectator. I look forward to the second programme on Saturday which will showcase the younger students more.
  19. I think that these two promotions were widely anticipated. Great news! But the article includes incorrect information. Calvin Richardson has been in the Company for less than five years and Harry Churches is actually in his first year in the RB proper having been an Aud Jebsen Young Dancer last season. Moreover, Steven McRae and Alexander Campbell were also "promoted within the Company". I did get wind of a rumour that promotion news would issue before the RB returns from Oz, possibly next week. Maybe this 'leak' will expedite matters.
  20. Yes - oh dear. It is a beautiful piece but not in the way shown in those photos.
  21. Madison Keesler was performing as Bathilde, was taking various corps roles in Giselle in Belfast and is leaving ENB this week. A lovely dancer and one who has shone in principal roles (including Khan's Giselle) while a First Artist. She will be very much missed.
  22. I don't know. There was an ad. on ENB's website for Male Principals and Soloists earlier this season. I think that 5/6 female dancers (including 2 from the ENBS and 2 from the RBS) and 2 men (one ex ENBS, the other ex RBS) have joined ENB over the past year:
